Many people who became displaced were not in concentration camps. If someone has just now told you this, who does not know your family or has not seen any documention, take it with a grain of salt. At the end of WWII, there were many groups of people removed from Poland and sent to other countries. Many were removed from other countries and brought to live in Poland. They were put in camps for transfer purposes. Many were held for years until they were transfer to other countries, such as Australia, New Zealand, England, Canada, US any others. They were called displaced persons. Many Poles in other countries bordering Poland has to be moved to Poland or elsewhere. Poland lost most of its territory at the end of WW II. Poland attained part of Germany. Germans were expelled from all of the Eastern European countries, and sent to Germany or elsewhere. I suggest first getting all the papers held at the archives in Australia so you can begin your search on your family history through this time period. There will be information and identification numbers for writing to organizations, which helped them leave Poland. Two years ago, I visited the Farny church in Grodno. It is a beautiful cathedral and in the late 1800s when the Russian government changed many of the local Roman Catholic churches to orthodox churches the villagers would go to the Farny to baptize their children. This happened in my family when the church they attended in Sopockin became an Orthodox church. Three children in 1882, 1885 and 1887 were baptized in the Farny. The locals refer to this church as the Farny although when they write about the church they write Fara. Churches in Poland and in this area of Belarus are never referred to as St. John, etc. it is always the name of the village were the church is located. When the Russians turned over the Roman churches to Orthodox in the Grodno area, they left a couple of churches as Roman Catholic, one of them being the Fara, the other one was in Hora and I think there was the Franciscan church between the Hora church on the east side of the Nemen River and Grodno. My grandfather was born in Radzon-Maly ,Poland (I've struggling with Radzon, doesnt seem to be the correct name), name - Wasyl Oleksiuk, born april 22 1913. Religion, catholic. He moved to Australia with Anna Kuper in 1949.(i can only assume they married in Poland or Ukraine.) They came to Australia on the Blatchford ship, which docked in sydney on 11 nov.1949. But i cannot confirm this is the correct ship as there names on not on the passenger ships' list. Wasyl passed away in Australia around 1970. Wasyl also had a sister, catherine, Katherine , kathrin, or similar spelling. I dont know anything about her. Anna kuper was born in Kulaszne Poland, April 14 1919. Anna's brothers/sisters' names are - Eli , Steven and Paul - I dont have any further info on them or Anna's parents. Wasyl and Anna's brother/sister/mother/father did not move to Australia. Hello Dick, You can find information about "Rak" immigrants on a website that two friends (also included on this e-mail) and I maintain about our "Lemko ancestral villages" in southeastern Poland. Note that the Raks and numerous other family names mentioned on the website were "Lemkos" from the "Lemkowyna" region of SE Poland. The Lemkos were a "microethnic" group of people that were indigenous to that region of Poland and lived there for centuries. The Polish communists under the sanction of the USSR tried to destroy them as a people in 1945 and 1947 by deporting them to Ukraine and western Poland. Have you checked with the Australia archives? I found your family listed on their website. He was born April 22, 1913. Anna was born April 14, 1919. It looks like they arrived with a daughter Erika, who was born September 24, 1946. Go to this site: http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/ResearcherScreen.asp, and type in the last name only and click on Search. You mentioned that other family members did not go to Australia. Anything is possible. Recently I helped people, who had family, who ended up in Africa, Canada and England. The wife of the family living in Africa asked me to help them find their family. We got lucky and found them. :) It's possible they could have ended up in another part of Australia, and not know how to find each other. I think your Radzon is most likely Radzanow.
