    3. Hello Adam, There is a site I use to see if there are others researching surnames. It's called the Surname Navigator. It seems to be owned by someone in Germany. It works well for me. I have been able to find family of mine doing research using it. You will need to disable your popup blocker to get it to work. Note you can designate in what country you wish to search or nationality. Click on the red and white Polish flad under Chinese flag. I would search US (if this is to where your family move) and Poland, of course. http://www.kuijsten.de/navigator/poland/ Tina On 10/3/07, ADAM UMPEROVITCH <ajumper28@yahoo.com> wrote: > > Just checking to see if anyone else is searching the surname Warkala. > > Adam > > > --------------------------------- > Don't let your dream ride pass you by. 3. I have found siblings by looking at the US Census. Look for the ancestor you know, and see if you can find the family. Obits are good too, especially for finding the married names of the daughters, and sometimes they even give the cities where they now live. 2. Mr Bobby, Please learn from Europe history that now Ukrainian territories before WWII were mostly in Poland boundaries so they were Polish citizens but they could speak as well Polish as Ukrainian language. At Northern border? of Poland before WWII? people spoke Polish, Lithuanian,? White Russian,? Hebrew? even German language. KUPER? family name comes? also in New York area, Pittsburg in Pensylvania and now one of this family member moved temporary to Mexico. Theirs ancestors came also from Poland. Unfortunatley, she doesnt know of anymore information, and perhaps information on this will be held at the Australian Archives. I have enquired about getting papers from the Australian Archives, as you suggested. My mother and her brothers and sisters were bought up in Australia, and besides english, they learnt how to speak Ukrainian at home through their mother and father. This would suggest that even though my grandparents were born in Poland, they either moved to Ukraine in the early years of schooling, or they had Ukraine Parents and perhaps lived in a Ukraine community in Poland. So i'm not sure exaclty how the Ukraine speaking comes into it. And then Germany seems to come into the equation, when in 1946 my grandparents married in Nurnberg.... Thanks. 2. Whilst waiting rather impatiently for feedback from the Australian Archives, regarding immagration papers of my grandparents, my google searching still continues. I have come across a Kuper family that stayed in the same village about 130years prior to my grandmothers birth. According to this link, in 1787 their was one family under the name Kuper in Kulaszne. http://www.carpatho-rusyn.org/new/166.htm Would it be reasonable to say that families generally stayed in their 'own' village, and didnt move about much, if at all. ? I'm not sure about the information on the bottom half of the web page - Parish data, etc, is that also referring to Kulaszne? Bobby.

    3. An additional FYI for Massachusetts residents --- You can sign up on line for a Boston Public Library e-card. It is good for about two years, and it gives you access, not only to the "NY Times" archives from 1851, but also to historic archives of the "Boston Globe" from 1872 to 1923, to historic archives of many newspapers throughout the US (the "Readex" collection), from 1690 to 1922, and to many of the more modern news archives. Additionally, there is access to Heritage Quest, a Biography and Genealogy Master Index, and a BPL Obituary Database. www.bpl.org Scroll down the page to the heading "Register for a library card online" for more information. The move comes two years to the day after The Times began the subscription program, TimesSelect, which has charged $49.95 a year, or $7.95 a month, for online access to its columnists' work and to the newspaper's archives. TimesSelect has been free to print subscribers to The Times, and to some students and educators. In addition to opening the entire site to all readers, The Times will also make available its archives from 1987 to the present without charge, as well as those from 1851 to 1922, which are in the public domain. The newspaper said the TimesSelect project had met expectations, drawing 227,000 paying subscribers - out of 787,000 over all - and generating about $10 million a year in revenue. "But our projections for growth on that paid subscriber base were low, compared to the growth of online advertising," said Vivian L. Schiller, senior vice president and general manager of the site, NYTimes.com. What changed, The Times said, was that many more readers started coming to the site from search engines and links on other sites instead of coming directly to NYtimes.com. These indirect readers, unable to gain access to articles behind the pay wall and less likely to pay subscription fees than the more loyal direct users, were seen as opportunities for more page views and increased advertising revenue. "What wasn't anticipated was the explosion in how much of our traffic would be generated by Google, by Yahoo and some others," Ms. Schiller said. The Times's site has about 13 million unique visitors each month, according to Nielsen/NetRatings, far more than any other newspaper site. Ms. Schiller would not say how much increased Web traffic the paper expects from eliminating the charges, or how much additional ad revenue the move was expected to generate. Those who have paid in advance for access to TimesSelect will be reimbursed on a prorated basis. The Wall Street Journal is the only major newspaper in the country to charge for access to most of its Web site, and it has nearly 1 million paying online readers. But its parent, Dow Jones & Company, is studying whether to continue the practice, according to people briefed on those talks. Rupert Murdoch, whose News Corporation is about to take over Dow Jones, has talked of the possibility of making access to The Journal free online. The Financial Times charges for access to selected material online, much as The New York Times has. The Los Angeles Times tried that model in 2005, but quickly dropped it, after seeing a sharp decline in Web traffic. Copyright 2007 The New York Times Company
