It sounds like you have a wonderful adventure ahead of you, Tolversf!! You might also use a search of Ellis Island ship manifests for immigration of other Wilks and Garzdas from the same town to find possible relatives. Look at their scanned manifests to see if they contain the names of a parent or relative in Poland or if they went to Luzerne County. Sometimes we can locate information about our direct ancestors by finding US records about their brothers and sisters. (Thank goodness my grandfather's sister came to the US and had a Social Security application I could order!) The parish record of the marriage your Adalbert and Zofia may provide some clues; baptismal records from Poland were required for marriage in the Catholic church and many times the priests recorded the information found on the documents - which included names of parents. There may be records from the church in Poland today of your family. In what towns were Adalbert and Zofia born? With this information, you can search for records microfilmed by the Latter Day Saints with a place search at: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp These records can be ordered at the Family History Center nearest you: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp Naturalization papers can also be a source of information as can death certificates. http://www.luzernecounty.org/county/row_offices/prothonotary Luzerne County Prothonotary / Clerk of Courts has Court Records from 1786 and is located at Luzerne County Courthouse, 200 North River Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18711; Telephone: (570) 825-1745, Fax: (570) 825-1757. " The prothonotary has been the clerk of court of common pleas since 1707. Court records here include divorces, naturalizations, peddlers' licenses, registration of attorneys, oaths of county officers, equity, sheriff's sales, juror lists, some tax records, and some civil court records. Other court records are with the clerk of courts." (Were they enumerated in the census as George and Sophia/Sophie - immigrated in 1899?) Best wishes on your search, Mary toliversf@aol.com wrote: > Thank you all for the valuable link ( http://www.kuijsten.de/navigator/poland/) b/c I was able to find other WILKs. Hello, Can someone please tell what 'maly' means. My grandfathers' birthplace is (apparently - waiting for confimation from records) Radzon-Maly, Poland. Cant seem to find the meaning on this word. Also, i've requested a marriage certificate (1946 - nurnberg) from Germany of my grandparents, which was actually very easy to do. So i expect that within a week or 2. My question here is, does any one know if the certificate is likely to contain other information other than the names of my grandparents? Parents perhaps? Religion? Thankyou, Bobby.
In order to keep up with every thread in a topic, you need to read every letter with that topic as it comes through the mail list. This means the first letter that began that thread. I began this thread a few days ago announcing the the NY Times had opened their archives to the public for free. It used to be that you could only get it through a public library site. I was using a library site a couple of years ago to reach the NY Times archives. I don't know why but they were discontinued. I think it was because NY Times wanted to make some money with their archives. They probably found there was not that much money to be made by charging for private subscriptions to their archives. Anytime you wish to follow a thread, you have not completely read, you can do this using http://www.rootsweb.com/. Go to their site and click on Mail lists at the top of the page. Next find the one for Poland Border Surnames. At the bottom of the description of the mail list, there are two links regarding our mail list archives. The first one is the active one and the second one is the threaded one. Click on the 2nd one, and you should find all the letters with this subject grouped together. My letter should be the first one regarding this topic. This is why we ask our members to please keep the same thread once one has started. The thread is the topic. This is why we wish members would not "kidnap" someone else's topic and just type a message in the body of their letter, which is not relevant to the original topic. The same goes with "kidnapping" a digest and typing in the body it, without changing the subject matter. Continuity is a courtesy we can all display to help others. If we can keep a thread together in the archives, it makes the archives a more useful tool. Hello, Thank you for your help and the information. Take care Adam Tina Ellis <polska.research@gmail.com> wrote: Hello Adam, There is a site I use to see if there are others researching surnames. It's called the Surname Navigator. It seems to be owned by someone in Germany. It works well for me. I have been able to find family of mine doing research using it. You will need to disable your popup blocker to get it to work. Note you can designate in what country you wish to search or nationality. Click on the red and white Polish flad under Chinese flag. I would search US (if this is to where your family move) and Poland, of course. http://www.kuijsten.de/navigator/poland/ Tina On 10/3/07, ADAM UMPEROVITCH wrote: > > Just checking to see if anyone else is searching the surname Warkala. > > Adam > > > --------------------------------- > Don't let your dream ride pass you by. Adam, If you would look at Steve Morse web page for passengers, it is www.Stevemorse.org and go to the Ellis Island Gold Form and put in the last name only. I found a Vincos Warkala who came twice to the US. In 1907 when was sent back for some medical reason and in 1909 when was admitted and went to Blissville NY. You do not have to belong to any group to use this site and it is great. I found entries here that I could not find on Ellis Island records. Good Luck.
