Hello. I've found a ship manifest for my relatives. Ship name: Majestic, sailing from Cherbourg 8 Nov 1922 and arriving to New York 14 Nov 1922, line 1 and 2, passenger Adam Zakrzewski and his wife Wladyslawa Zakrzewski. They came back from Poland to USA. This number is: 11-784573-2683 and for Wladyslawa this number is: 3-3683 which probably means that the beginning of this number is the same, so full number for Wladyslawa is: 11-784573-3683. I would like to ask you what those numbers mean? Is it passport number or ticket number or something else? I see on this page that there are many pasengers have those numbers in their lines. Does someone can explain me what it means? Adam Zakrzewski (born 1886) arrived to USA in 1913 (I have his manifest) and Wladyslawa Slodkowska (born 1891) I don't know where she arrived (I can't find her manifest but I suppose it was between 1910-1914). Then they married at 26 Aug 1914 in Chicago. Next they visited Poland but I can't find their ship manifest when they're sailing from USA to Europe (I think it was between 1920-1921). Does Ancestry has databases of people who came back from USA to Europe? And for the end they came back from Poland to USA in 1922 (this manifest which you see). I also can't find their passports. On the second page of this ship manifest there is also postscript with a strange date... Feb-1911 and a bit below something like... 1920 but I'm not sure this year. Those dates are in the column "Whether ever before in the US; and if so, when and where" so maybe it means when they were before in US? Since mostly all of the replies were sent to me directly, I will post the suggestions I recieved to the lists. 1 - begin with documentation - gather birth, death, burial, obituary, SS#, WWI & WWII draft info, and any other documents I can find. 2 - check census 3 - check for frequency of name distribution in current day Poland and regional distribution 4 - check Family HIstory Library for historical documents 5 - check out on-line databases such as Ancestry.com. For my husband's grandfather, I was able to match some numbers similiar to that to his naturalization papers-- but I don't know if they used the same system all the time, but I think that's often what that refers to, which is why there are also often much later dates included on the lists as well. You need to know the parish in which you need to find records in order to use it. If you don't know it, you could find the wrong person thinking they might be your ancestor. If I get something that doesn't translate in Google translator, then I copy the whole text of the page and go to the google translator page where you can copy and paste text in and go at it that way. Sarah, Did you try the Jewish Records Indexing of Polish records? It's tedious but a lot of data, and transcriptions are ongoing. http://www.jewishgen.org/jri-pl/jriplweb.htm My problem there is that all the records were destroyed in a fire before 1900 for the family I have mostly been working on from Makow.
