If you could post a link to the manifest or port, date, name or your grandfather, as well as where your grandfather lived in America, members of the mailing list can look at the manifest to decipher as well as show you other sources to help you in your search. As stated, first papers refers to naturalization papers. When the exact town name is determined, a search for microfilm from the Latter Day Saints will enable you to order the microfilm and find more records for your ancestors. Church and civil records where he lived will help in your search. Many times the death certificate and church marriage records will give you more information. Yes, I've found some on Footnote.com, which is great if your ancestors were naturalized in Pittsburgh PA (and other places I'm not familiar with I'm sure) because they collected all incoming papers together for the naturalization. I forgot to tell you that Ancestry.com used to have some of the naturalization records for military personnell, who applied after entering the service. If your grandfather was not born in the US, contacting the town where he was born will not help. First papers can be found in the US where they were filed. Usually it was in the local superior court, which covered the town where he was residing. Municipal courts cover cities. Superior courts cover counties. If your grandfather moved before the waiting period was up to file his petition, he could still proceed with the process to become a citizen without refiling any first papers. You need to know all the places he lived in the US before he became a citizen to be able to search for those records. After 1906, the filing place was changed to the Federal District Courts, who became the agency where the entire naturalization process was handled. In some areas of the US, the change did not occur, but in most it did. Here is a nice link to help you understand the paper trail for the naturalization process. It is at the NARA website. http://www.archives.gov/genealogy/naturalization/naturalization.html Sometimes different libraries, historical or genealogy associations have them because the courts have passed them on for others to have for us to have access. So ... check with the respectived courthouses in the places where he lived, if known. If you do not know all of them, you may never find that one document. Tom, This is a return trip to the US, after having living here. Apparently the only time they arrived here previously was in 1911, so that must be the year they moved to this country. On this manifest, they are not numbers for citizenship verification. Between 1906 and 1926, the US did not make notations regarding citizenship on the ship manifests. I think these numbers were most likely for passport verification. They would have had to have passports if they wished to travel between countries. This website explains numbers you see on the manifests: http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/Manifests/occ/. You can use it for future reference. I have not found the manifests for their entry into the US the first time they arrived. I'll try for a while to run some more searches as I have time.
