This is a great site ... if you find the village/town with your family. If you don't it's back to the microfilm. Sorry about that. I checked for my grandfather's village and did not find him, but I already have his birth record. If just means no one has researched his village or his family surname. Thank you very much for the new site for us to use. Hello Tina Yes , I am sure that I will have to check other nearby town records for the HAACK family records. I did not find any parish record of the town of Sztum/Stuhm , for the HAACK surname The " Batch " numbers are a way to check the towns B&M records on line. Not all of the towns records are online. The towns are listed in order by the alphabet. I stumbled onto to the site , and have been using it for a long time. The letters " IGI " are in the site address , so I am sure that it was generated by the LDS. I believe that all of the towns are in Germany/Prussia. There are " Batch " numbers for France , however I have not been able to use those numbers. If You would like to try the " Batch " numbers , I'll send the site to You. Hello Tina Thank You for Your reply. I have checked out some of those microfilms of Stettin , and all of the " batch " numbers , of all of the Stettin area. I have been searching for the Haack ancesters , for so long that I wonder if They came over to the U.S.A. under an assumed name. The batch numbers of Koslinka , and Stuhm do not seem to be entered . Doesn't anyone here know you can now order the entire C-File on people who were naturalized, starting with 1907 I think, from the new Genealogy Dept at Citizenship and Immigration Service? http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis I have not done it yet, and it is expensive, but it is supposed to have everything. If you don't have the case or file number (which you can get elsewhere like family history centers), then it's a $20 search fee, and I believe it is genealogists who do the searching from what I've read. Then the file itself is something like $35 once you have the file number, however you get it. Expensive, but not that bad if you would have to pay to every courthouse involved $20 for a search (which is what I would have to do in California).
This site gives insight about records in Ukraine: http://www.halgal.com/locatingrecords.html By using the SS-5 letter at the Social Security Death Index site, the application for Social Security can be ordered; this document will show names of parents, including mother's maiden name. http://ssdi.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ What to expect on the application: http://www.ancestry.com/learn/library/article.aspx?article=919 Michael's death certificate would be another possible source for names of parents, depending on the information of the reporting person. I chose the pay-per-view plan good for 365 days so I could use it when I needed it and not be wasting money at those times when I am busy with other projects. Remember they will be the only source of the 1911 census and I believe that will only be available as pay-per-view, not on unlimited subscriptions. Same as other sites and databases, sometimes there is good information about a particular person, sometimes not. I don't think there is a rule. I can tell you that the one outgoing passenger list I checked at both websites for one of my own families (not from Wales) did not have as much information as the incoming passenger list for the same voyage I got from Ancestry.com. But they are complementary resources. Some lists I find there, Ancestry does not seem to have. And all their images are much, much higher quality. With regards to your relative's travelling to Glasgow, that information would be more likely to be in the Hamburg passenger lists from Ancestry.com. I don't know if the data includes point of origin before departing the British Isles. I just know the passenger records I found, with my limited searching, were minimally helpful. There is a place for occupation, sometimes filled in and helpful, sometimes not. One nifty thing it has, in the "View Transcript" choice, is a list of the other passengers on the same voyage who have the same surname, in addition to basic information about the person who you selected. And, when it is available, details about the ship's capacity, captain, and other stuff. Passenger lists themselves are quite expensive in units, so I just use my credits on transcripts unless I really need a passenger list. Hopefully someone else with more experience using their immigration records may be able to fill in the gaps in helping with your decision.
Chris, Here is the link to the ship manifest (this page and next page): http://www.ellisisland.org/search/shipManifest.asp?pID=100873030318 The manifest certainly does say that Michal was born in Schinkell, Germany, which was also listed as his last residence. The ship left for America from the port of Bremen, Germany. His closest relative, his father, was listed as living in Oplucko. In the 1920 US census, Michael is listed as b. Ukraine, mother tongue Polish, which seems to affirm Oplucko. Perhaps the shipping clerk, seeing last residence as Schinkel, Germany, simply assumed that was Michal's place of birth. Here is a map of Schinkel, Germany: http://nona.net/features/map/placedetail.505536/Schinkel/ LDS records for Oplucko are found using this place search at familysearch.org: http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp Greek Catholic records are available from 1835-1865; film numbers are found by using the 'View Film Notes' link at the top right of the page. Though Michal would not have been listed, his father surely would have records in the microfilm. Possibly this is why it was indicated you would have to know the exact town so you could contact government or church for more information. Today, the records for Oplucko are housed in the archives in L'viv, Ukraine. Hi, You don't have to be a member to search, but you do to view the images, which is the most helpful obviously. Once I'm finished working for the day I'll take a peek. Laura, Do you need to be a member to use Footnotes? I have the actual certificate of naturalization, but, none of the paper work which would have a lot, I think, of information which I do not have. He lived in Allegheny County, Homestead to be exact. His name was Michael (Mike) Shupinka, which is on the document, however I have seen his name written Chupinka, Chupink, and Shupink, it was in Feb, 1924. You would think with all the information I sent to the Archives in Oct. that they would have been able to let me know, when I called them and gave them the information they told me with all I had it would be very easy to locate the papers and they would notify me within a week of getting my e-mail information...still waiting!. If it is not too difficult a task to check I would appreciate it, since I have been searching for this information for three years and my own mother just this document this past Oct, I guess you can say I am in no rush. I don't recall seeing any discussion of this website (www.findmypast.com) on this list. Using the free search, I have found that the site has passenger records related to my Polish great-grandfather's immigration in 1907. He came to Ellis Island via Glasgow. I have already seen the Ellis Island records, but I was wondering whether the UK's outgoing records might add to what I already know. For example, I don't know how he traveled to Glasgow. I also wonder whether it might have information like occupation, etc. Is this the sort of information I could expect? I'd like to have some idea what to expect before I spend the money to get an image of the record. Comments from anyone who has used this site or is familiar with the available records would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Jeff
Thank you Mary, here is my G/Father's name Michal Medyk b.Oplucko,Poland arrived Apr.1st 1912 I have his Declaration of Intent,Petition For Naturalization,Oath Of Allegiance & Certificate of Arrival Papers. I asked if someone could shed some light on this(all I needed to do was turn the light on) : ) upon rereading them just now I see Bremen Germany was place where he emigrated from but on manifest it states Schinkell Germany (confused me). Cecelia wrote "Rereading the original post,I think you mean another kind of papers back in the old country" Yes,these are the papers I was referring to when I asked about 1st papers.I was under the impression the 1st papers where those that he applied for to enter the USA. Thanks to everyone here..you're an awesome group!
I found all of these on Footnote -- but they're only online for certain places, such as Allegheny County. Footnote has Declaration of Intent, Naturalization, Oath of Allegiance and certificate of arrival for some people. I just searched and searched my husband's family names until i pulled it up. If you don't have a membership, I could do some cursory searching for you to see if they have anything, if you'd like to give me the names. For my husband's great-grandfather, whose last name was Topolsky, I found 7 pages under the names Topolsky, Topolski, Trepolsky, Treepolski and Trepolski so it can take quite a while! Do you mean Declaration of Intent or Naturalization papers? I found my great-grandfather's D of I in the courthouse of the county where he settled. The index was online, but I had to go to the courthouse to find the papers and make a copy. We were lucky because, althought he index is there, several of the books with the papers in them are missing. I found my great-grandfather's and about 6 other people who were either related or who I remembered hearing about. I had a list of about 20 that I wanted to look for. My g-grandfather settled at about age 21 or 22, but didn't apply until he was 77. He lived to be 94. Rereading the original post, I think you mean another kind of papers back in the old country. I'm not familiar with those, so this is something new to me. I am interested in locating information about naturalization in Pittsburgh, Pa. I have sent to the Archives in Philly however it has been two months and I haven't gotten an answer. I even sent them the number on the certificate with the petition Volume number and the number. I am also looking for the first papers and all other papers to get information. Please tell me how you found the information on Footnotes.com. My grandfather became a citizen in 9124.
