Chris & Mary, I noticed that he gave his mother married name as his relative in Poland. It's possible she remarried and he was known in Poland by her married named. His real father could have died and she remarried or she had him out of wedlock. He may have totally changed his name on a whim. Time and research will answer all the questions as to why this happened. Re - Surname Shacher - I had some time to do a little digging, and I found my Grandfather, Morris Shacher entering the U.S. sometime in 1897 on the ship Normannia departing Hamburg August 16, 1897, but in looking at the passenger lists for the Normannia entering New York and passengers going through Ellis Island, on any date in 1897 after that, he is not listed, but the ship's manifest lists him......very frustrating. At least I found him on a ship. And I learned he was a Kaufmann, or merchant. I also found my grandmother Sadie Weiss as a servant in NYC, and learned that her eldest daughter, Lillie, was born in Ohio. The problem I have with Lillie is I don't know her last name as she allegedly had a different father whose name I don't know. So, some progress on the elusive Morris, or Moishe, or who knows? Tina, Thank you for taking the time to search for the name of the town Bielousy. I realize that this is probably not the correct spelling, and that there are many names that have similar spellings. I believe it may have a translation of "white" as in Belarus. My grandfather filled out an "Alien Registration Form" on Sep 30, 1940 in New Berlin, Chenango County, N.Y. He along with my grandmother who was born in Grodno (now Hrodna) never became citizens. In 1930 they bought a dairy farm near New Berlin, New York and lived there for the rest of their lives. Grandpa always wanted to go back to a free Poland but unfornately never lived to see this. He died April 3, 1963. On this form that he filled out probably with the help of one of his sons (his English was never very good) he states: "3. (a) I was born on August 16, 1885 (b) I was born in (or near) Bielousy (for Province states "don't know") Poland 4. I am a citizen or subject of Poland ................ 7. (a) I last arrived in the United States at New York, N.Y. on June 12, 1903 (b) I came in by cannot remember (c) I came as a Passenger (d) I entered the United States as a Permanent resident (e) I first arrived in the United States on June 12, 1903" **He told me he came as a deck passenger, sleeping in a rolled-up rug that his mother had given him. I have searched the Ellis Island site and came up with a possible connection but the dates were off: Name -- Wawierni, Josef Birth Place -- Russia, Polish Place of Residence after arrival -- So. Amboy N.Y., Last Residence -- Popilowka Date of Arrival -- August 11, 1905 Age -- 18 Gender -- M Marital Status -- S Ship -- Graf Waldersee Port of Departure -- Hamburg, Germany" On original manifest it says that Josef will stay with his brother Karl Wawierny in So. Amboy, NY. He also had $3.00. In the 1920 Census he "... owns home with mortgage, age 38, married, immigrated 1902, Al, reads and writes, born Russian Poland, both parents born Russian Poland, speaks English, occupation wood bagger at wooden box factory, wage worker." Her parents were Francis WAWIERNIA and Marcella JELSKA perhaps from Bielousy, Poland. Her husband was Joseph BILINSKI who died on Sep 4, 1964 at Pinecrest Nursing Home, North Andover, Essex, MA. At the time of his death they had five living children -- Adeline, Helen, Mary, Edward, and Richard. My grandfather Josef WAWIERNIA (later changed to Joseph WARREN) was perhaps best man at his sister Pauline's wedding in Lowell, MA. It appears that Pauline, her husband Joseph along with my grandparents Josef and Michaelina raised their families in Lowell, MA. They probably attended Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Lowell. Holy Trinity was where most of the Polish were married, baptised, made First Communion and Confirmed, and buried from. If any of this sounds familiar I would love to hear from you. Hello Tina To use the " Batch Numbers " to search for a person's records in Germany/Prussia Just click onto the following link http://www.igi-index.de/index.php?seite=batch8&lang=uk&sort=ort&id=aach When the page with all of the towns shows up , starting with the first town of AACH . at the end of the address. You can search for a towns records alphabetically To search for a different town's records alphabetically , You may want to print out the following directions that I use. ( found this method by trial and error {grin} ) Left click on the end of that town " Aach " in the upper window , of Your tool bar . All of the address will turn black. On the directional arrows of Your keyboard , click on the one that is pointing to the right. The address will turn normal color , and a blinking cursor will appear. Use Your " backspace " key to remove the towns name OF AACH , back to the = sign Be sure and leave the = sign. Type in the name of the town , that You are interested in ( no spaces ) and click " GO " in the tool bar at the right of the IGI address . NOTE ; not all towns are in the IGI towns index. IF a town is entered , a list of towns will show up , with the " batch " number at the right hand side. Scroll farther to the right , and You will see a blue " link " word . Click onto that blue " link " word and all of the name records in that batch number , will show up into the next page . If the total of persons shown is like 200+ , then use the " refine search " provision , because there may be hundreds of names in that batch number On that page at the upper right hand corner there will be a " refine search " Click onto refine search and You can type in the full name , or only the surname of whom You are searching for ,and click search , You do not need to enter Germany , because that batch number is for a German town , in all of Prussia Then any record of that person , or that surname , will show up in the next page. If there is no one of that name , or surname , the next page will read ( no record ). Then You must try another batch number , or another town , for other batch numbers.
