Hi Tina - thanks to our readers and you for your help. I made a mistake with the year it's 1885. Will try the recommended sites for assistance in translating Russian to English. I can read Polish but this is not in Polish. The archives said they couldn't provide a translation, however, they somehow found 21 records for me. I'm pulling out the one in 1885 because I think from records here that is the birth year of my grandfather. These are handwritten church records obtained from the civil records in Zamosc. Donna, A guestion you may or may not understand. Why would you take a document that a Pole wrote in Russian and immediately attempt to translate it to Engish? You need to remember that there is a vast difference between Polish phonetics and English phonetics. You need to go from Russian to Polish and than Polish to English. Look at the phonetics in the table on this page: http://www.esisnet.com/~jackbowmanstc/russian.htm for the different alphabets. You will see what I mean. There are many tables on the Internet for Russian to English. That's great if you are transcribing something that was written by an English speaking person into Russian. For this type of situation, naturally you need to go from Russian to English, but this is different when a person of another nationality has written the document. If it was written by a Chinese person, you would go Russian to Chinese, not Russian to English. This is why the LDS developed this table for transcribing Russian into three other languages. When dealing with records in this region, they were written in most cases by Polish priests into German or Russian. Once you go from Russian to Polish, you can use this list of Polish Genealogical Words and the sites Bronwyn and I have given you. I find these offers and suggestions for memoirs and books of first-hand accounts as a big benefit of being on this board. Most of us would never had known about them. I would suggest anyone with one of these books to send a copy to Greenleaf Press. They are a catalog history bookstore that sells history books 'for the thoughtful child' -- and adult. The 1906 Census for Manitoba, District of Dauphin, Sub-District 21 , p.2, item 8 shows the following: Wasyl Kozak as head of the family, age 36, arriving 1904 first settling in Valley River at 14/27/21/W1 (Born circa 1879-Austria) Catharine Kozak, wife, age 32 (born circa 1874-Austria) Catharine Kozak, daughter, age 9 (born circa 1897-Austria) Anna Kozak, daughter, age 2 (born circa 1904-Canada) Nichola Kozak, son, age - (born circa 1906)--The survey was done on June 25,1906 Harry Kozak, brother, age 20 (born circa 1886) Coincidently, my Ggrandfather's family (Boyachuk) is recorded on the same page as item #12. They were also from Staresiola and came over in 1898. As you probably know it was common for immigrant families to gravitate to the same locales I checked the Hamburg listings for Kozak and Staresiola and the following shows up.(See Kozak pdf attachment) It would appear that a group of Kozaks came to Canada via the port of Halifax, from Frankfurt aboard the SS ALBON. The ALBON left Frankfurt 25 May, 1904. Aboard were alphabetically: Anna - 2 Months Ewa -23 (single)- Probably Wasyl's younger sister Hryc (Harry) -17 (single) Kaszka (diminutive of Katherine?)- 7 Kaszu (Variant of Katharine?) - 30 (Mother) Wasyl - 33 (Father) If this information rings true to your notes and this is your family, then the boat SS ALBON probably arrived in early June, 1904 at Halifax. Listers, My wife has just completed the translation of a legal document from the the Rzeszow public archives. It describes hearings surrounding the shootings of 17 people by the Nazis on July 8, 1943. This was a "roundup" of some citizens who might have been involved in the Polish underground in the villages of Stobierna and Jasionka. I have seen some of the names in the document among posts by listers. Here are the names, I am using only plain English letters so that those whose computers are not set for Polish letters will be able to read them. Villages: Stobierna, Jasionka (Near Rzeszow). These were the persons who were shot: Franciszek Bednarz, Jan Bednarz, Walenty Bielenda, Mateusz Ciapa, Stefan Debowski, Franciszek Dul, Jozef Drupka, Jozef Iwaszek, Mieczyslaw Sierzega, Antoni Szybisty, Edward Szybisty, Jakub Szybisty, Jan Szybisty, Jozef Szybisty, Wiktoria Szybisty, and Wojciech Wilk The following names are also mentioned elsewhere in the document. Most are related to those who were executed.
