Hi, folks, Please ignore the note I just accidentally sent to the list. I was trying to respond to a question sent me back in July -- which gives you an idea how far behind I am! I somehow hit the wrong keys, and off it went, and to the list, not to the lady in question. I don't think there's anything in the note that will embarrass anybody (except for the revelation I'm answering notes from July). Still, if I had not sent it off prematurely, I would have finished the answer, and I probably would have noticed it was addressed to the list instead of the lady who asked the question. The worst part is, my fingers were flying all over the keyboard, and I don't know what combination of keys I hit! To: Barb <BLRomanc@sbcglobal.net> Hi, Back on July 28 you wrote me the following note: > I was also curious about my family name of Romanczuk. I edit a number of publications, and frequently am on deadline when I receive requests for information. They pile up, and when I have a chance I try to answer them -- but I never really get caught up. ROMANCZUK in Polish can be spelled two different ways: with plain N, pronounced roughly "rome-ON-chook," or with accented N, pronounced roughly "ro-MINE-chook." While they mean essentially the same thing, "son of Roman," one is a lot more common in Poland than the other. You can see the maps on these pages: http://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/romanczuk.html http://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/roma%25C5%2584czuk.html As you see, the version with accented N

Rinny: I checked www.familysearch.org records pilot site for the brothers. They don't appear there as James or Lawrence. However, I didn't try an alternate spelling variant. But there are several other Perz families listed from Detroit, MI. Maybe one of them will yield the info you seek. If you aren't familiar with family search, let the list know and I'll copy the info into a message for you. They were listed in my gr-grandfathers obit,in 1934, as his brothers from Detroit,I've checked the census for Mich.(1930)with no luck. I'm hopeing someone with knowledge of the family will see this and respond. The brothers were from German occupied Poland, their brother John was born bet. 1850 and 1854. He immigrated in 1884 to Phil.,Pa. and moved to Wi.around 1890. Any Perz's from Mich who view this please contact me. Thanks very much,Rinny ------------------------------
Hi Bronwyn and Tina: I was thinking that the birthplace might be in Belarus. The only things I have available to me right now are copies of the 1920 and 1930 Federal Censuses. There are a few family records that I have, but they have very little useful information and do not go beyond my great-grandfather. Like I said, in one of the censuses the birthplace was listed as Poland; the other listed it as Russia. The other family records also list both Russia and Poland as his birthplace. I do know that Belarus was once part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and was also a part of Russia for many years. At the time of his birth in 1884, it would have been the Russian Empire. However, the borders changed frequently and I can't pinpoint the exact site.
