I've done some Googling on this, but still could use some advice on where to write or look for personnel records of Polish soldiers stationed at St. Andrews, Scotland during WWII. The person of interest, for whom I have a name, was probably a member of an Artillery Unit, certainly a member of the Army. There are numerous Polish War Graves in Scotland's cemeteries. Did he die in Scotland after the war? Then, Scotlands People is the place to go: http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk Pay a small fee and download up to 1950. "A Question of Honor" by Olson & Cloud (about the Polish Air Squadron) has a great bibliography and acknowledgements at the back. See if your local library has a copy. It does say Sikorsky Museum in England has info on Polish Army also, but Sikorsky website doesn't mention it. Good hunting. [email protected]
Folks, About six weeks ago I posted a message to this group asking for help with the translation of inscriptions in Polish written on the backs of some photos I had inherited. Several people responded with good suggestions about posting the photos at other sites and then sending a note to this group with the appropriate links. I am now able to do this and will take advantage of this new ability in the future. (I travel a lot, which is why it took so long). In the meantime, Joe Armata responded with an offer to help if I sent images directly to him. I took advantage of Joe's kind offer and he has helped me to complete the task of translating about 25 photo inscriptions from Polish to English. Actually, Joe did most of the work but I did learn quite a bit from working with him (and I now have Shea and Hoffman's book "In Their Words..."). I know that this group is set up for the purpose of exchanging information and helping others with their research. Still, I would like to publicly thank Joe for his significant help with this task because I know it took a significant amount of his time, he did it for a complete stranger, and it means so much to me as I try to come up the hill on another foreign language.
