    3. Hello Vera, I've had a look at the marriage record for this couple, 1855, (Carl Lamprecht genannt Hoffmann, and Pauline Kraetzer). It suggests another possible explanation for the double surname. In the marriage record, Carl Lamprecht/Hoffmann is simply called Carl Hoffmann, and it says the groom's parents are the chimneysweep Carl Gottlieb Hoffmann, and his wife Catharina geb Lamprecht, both still living. So, in the 1862 record, when the Pastor writes that Carl's "real" surname is Lamprecht, and Hoffmann is the name he is known by, he may be implying that you might have to look at birth records from before his parents' marriage to find Carl. Is that possible, or is it already ruled out?
