I am researching my family history and need to locate the current name of the city/town of Podlesa, Russia which is listed as the birth place and last place of residence for my ancestors on both the Hamburg Passenger list on the Ellis Island passenger list. Their race is listed as Polish but their nationality is listed as Russian. Thank you!

Donna, Chris responded to your first post with a suggestion/question: "Could Podlesa be a corruption of Podlasie/Podlaskie/?" There are also numerous places in Poland with the name, Podlesie. Of course you'd have to weed out the ones that are not located in the Russian partition. http://www.jewishgen.org/Communities/LocTown.asp Then again, the location could be in Belarus. I think you'll need a little more information in order to figure out exactly where "Podlesa" is located. Try to locate a Declaration of Intent and Petition for Naturalization for more info. Folks on this list might be able to offer more help if you give us the names and dates of the people you are interested in.
