On the record, his place of birth is written as Novasznts, Poland.  I am guessing whoever wrote the name did not know the correct spelling, or was not sure of the proper Polish spelling, or did not know how to convert the spelling from Polish to English. Up to this point, the only reference I've had to my grandfather's (Peter Lizon) life in Poland before coming to the U.S. in the early 1900's was his ship record which shows him as coming from the town of Olszana.
