Mike, I've been casually following your line of inquiry, and am a bit surprised that no one has noted that the Rus who occupied a great deal of Galicia in past times are not in their mind Russians. "Galicia" itself referred to an area of southern Poland and portions of old Slovakia encompassed by the Carpathian mountains when it was under Austrian control in the era when your relative lived there. Krasno was probably the nearest town of any size. There are several other appellations used by these people and their descendants to describe themselves. Some today consider them Ukrainians. Suggest you look up this line of thought. Galicia was never under Russian control.
