I've been dreaming of this....and here it is:Google maps tools for vintage maps. Here is a vintage map of Posen c. 1844 http://rumsey.geogarage.com/maps/g4807061.html http://rumsey.geogarage.com/gmaps.html The over 120 historical maps in the Google Maps and Google Earth Rumsey Historical Maps sites have been selected by David Rumsey from his collection of more than 150,000 historical maps; in addition, there are a few maps from collections with which he collaborates. These maps can also be seen in the Gallery layer of Google Earth, Rumsey Historical Maps layer. All the maps contain rich information about the past and represent a sampling of time periods (1680 to 1930), scales, and cartographic art, resulting in visual history stories that only old maps can tell. Each map has been georeferenced, thus creating unique digital map images that allow the old maps to appear in their correct places on the modern globe. Some of the maps fit perfectly in their modern spaces, while others (generally earlier period maps) reveal interesting geographical misconceptions of their time and therefore have to be more distorted to fit properly in Google Maps and Earth. Cultural features on the maps can be compared to the modern satellite views using the slider bars to adjust transparency.

To: Fred Hoffman; posted to all Fred: I’ve tripped across a new path upon which I can explore a potential family lead. You may not recall, but on my Mother’s side of the family we have many Kulick’s. Now, some time ago you mentioned to me that the name could be Kulig or Kulik; that in Polish, Kulig sounds pretty much like COO-Lick, as does the name Kulik. When my Great Grandfather Thomas Kulick came to America in 1890 he entered the country as Kulick. Several of his subsequent children used the spelling Kulik as their surname. While Thomas used Kulick for most of his “American life” he used Kullick (2 "L's") on his naturalization papers. Now I have come across a potential lead using the surname Kuligowski. There are many people who use the names Kulik and Kulig in Poland. I’m fairly certain that my Thomas is from Ozimek. I guess my questions are these: Are there any differences in the two names? Also, is Kuligowski different from either Kulig or Kulik except for the obvious different ways of spelling the name? In otherwords, are they all interchangeable and, therefore, this new path might be worth chasing for a few blocks? Thank you, John

Thanks to all that have replied. I should have clarified a bit. The name change from CICHANTEK to CHICANTEK is not only a misspelling but was actually changed by some in the family tree it seems upon coming to US as their actual name spelling once arrived but actually was CICHANTEK in Poland. Just wondering if somone misspelled it from the get go and not knowing english well the family just kept using the wrong variation on everything from that point? There is now a possible part of the family tree that uses the misspelling CHICANTEK. Being that it is such a rare name in both Poland and US and the fact that I have some documented reasons to believe the family line is one in the same how would you all suggest I incorporate this into my family tree? With both spelling as they are after the change in US with notes attached explaining or ? Hi -- I am looking for the name of a town and where it is located today. It was on two brothers passenger lists to the United States i 1906 and 1910. The place was called Zappott, Germany. That is the town where their mother Amelia Schoetthle (?sp). It also had like Seid Str. #54. That was for her son Richard Bruno Zilinski in 1906. For the son Otto George Zilinski it had that she was living in Zoppott, W. Prussia, Germany and had her name as Emiele Schroettle. That was in 1910 when he came to Baltimore, Maryland as well. Hate to disappoint you but as a native Polish speaker, and after checking this Google new 'toy', I can summarize it with one word - GARBAGE. And I bet you that other native speakers will agree with me as well. I think, at this stage, the Google English - Polish/Polish-English translation is the WORST I've seen in any of the on-line automatic translations. And, what that women writes in the blog about it being so great and that all you need is a dictionary for just few words - is not true. The whole translation is a slew of incoherent babble that no native speaker can make sense of.
