    3. Patty, People who do not reside _continuously_ in the U.S. for a specified amount of time are not eligible to become citizens. So if someone were overseas during WWII they would not have been eligible. Numbers written on the manifests can mean several things. See these explanations on Jewish Gen: http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/manifests/ Debbie Patty Milich wrote: > Hello: > > My apologies, but I can't seem to find a recent (last few months) email from > someone helpful that addressed the issue of the hand-written, later-inserted > numbers on ships' manifests. 2. A few of the Ostrowskis I've surveyed lived on Theodore. Check out: John Ostrowski http://dealraider.com/gene/detroitostrowskis/139.html Jacob Ostrowski http://dealraider.com/gene/detroitostrowskis/119.html Vasile Ostanski (Ostrowski?) http://dealraider.com/gene/detroitostrowskis/917.html I don't have much information on those few though, it would be great if you had info that linked them in to the larger tree. I've gotten one great reply from another person who was able to link 3 family groups into 1 based on this project and had information where that family group came from in Poland.  I hope we can whittle these down to nearly no duplicate individuals. ----- Original Message ---- From: "Lynnjoni@aol.com" <+rootswebblobcom+junkymail+c7e186c945.Lynnjoni#aol.com@spamgourmet.com> To: poland-roots@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, June 16, 2008 8:19:58 AM Subject: [POLAND] Detroit Ostrowski Hi, I was very surprised to see  a relative of mine listed on your  site.  It is Mary Boike married to Valentine Groth.  Mary is the  daughter of Frank Boike and Elizabeth Reske.  Mary is my grandfather  August's sister and my dad's aunt.  Did the Ostrowski's live on Theodore in  Detroit.  I remember my cousin talking about an Ostrowski who was a friend  of my grandfather.  It might have been Abram. 2. Patty Milich
    3. Hello: My apologies, but I can't seem to find a recent (last few months) email from someone helpful that addressed the issue of the hand-written, later-inserted numbers on ships' manifests. This was a reference to the proof of arrival date, etc. for the declaration of intent, as I recall. What I am asking is: is this a reference number that would be sufficient to find the actual full naturalization record from the USCIS or NARA? For one ancestor, I already have a set of docs: ship's manifest and all three docs for naturalization, however, there are no two numbers or codes on any of the docs that are the same, so it makes me wonder. For the person's naturalization that I'm now looking for, the date of this naturalization is about 1945-46 during WWII, probably overseas. Has anyone researched US naturalization of an alien outside the US? Thanks, Patty

    1. [POLAND] Detroit, Michigan area Ostrowskis and related families project
    2. Hello, I've posted the result of work on Ostrowski families and related individuals that were in the Detroit, Michigan area.  This information is based on the Detroit city directories, US census records, and Michigan vital records on FamilySearchLabs. A good page to start is in the name index, but everything is linkable: http://www.dealraider.com/gene/detroitostrowskis/names16.html If you had any Detroit-area Ostrowskis, please take a look and see if you link in or know any more information on these families.  Please send me an email here or through the site with any information updates you have.  If you have any information that would prove that some of these people are duplicates of each other, I'd be grateful. I did this work because I'm trying to find the ancestral village of my ancestor Vincent Ostrowski (1860-1939).  By surveying all the Ostrowskis in the area, I hoped to link together with some other families who may be easier to trace the ancestral village.  After all this effort, I have not been able to accomplish that yet, but the work is hopefully useful to everyone else. Thank You! p.s. I'm primarily looking for my ancestral village in Poland (West Prussia) of Vincent Ostrowski (b 1860 - d 1939, married to Julia Radzikowska).  After a lot of work, my best hint is still the Hamburg Passenger List that gives a town that looks like Kl. Conja, but I have not found a matching record yet on any towns.  If you have any information, please contact me, I also have a big reward for anyone that prove the original village! :)

    3. If you are on Windows Vista, there is a Windows Photo Gallery included in the system. It is really great little program for cataloguing and tagging photos. You can also email pictures directly from the catalogue. If you are on Windows XP, I'd suggest to get program Picasa made by Google (picasa.com). It is free and widely used. Personally, because I do a lot of photo/graphic design and I own the Adobe Photoshop, I use Adobe Bridge. Probably, one of the best photo cataloguing software on the market today. But it is $$$. 3. I was torn between using PhotoShop Elements (the very basic aspects of that program) and knowing that I probably need to bite the bullet and learn the full-sized program (and bite the cost of it). Then I found a couple guide books at Borders and Barnes & Noble for PhotoShop Elements that taught me that I was using only a miniscule portion of cut-down version of PhotoShop. There is a huge component of PhotoShop Elements dedicated to cataloguing and restoring old photographs. It's time for me to do some heavy-duty reading and start cataloguing and restoring the hundreds of family photographs I've collected. I use a Mac, but PhotoShop Elements is available in Windows or Mac versions. -- Alan On Jun 12, 2008, at 7:26 AM, singmore wrote: > If you are on Windows Vista, there is a Windows Photo Gallery > included in > the system. 3. Alan I have the same problem. I would love to give my father a copy of the family tree, but it is just so big now that printing it is not an option.Never mind about taping all the sheets together! If anyone comes up with a solution, could you pass it on to me please? Especially as I've just had more info about my Westphalian family - so far I have ancestors in West Prussia, Zabloty near Lodz, and Westphalia. Oh, and my English family! I'm not too skilled at this genealogy, but even as a bumbling amateur I am amazed at how much can be found. I'm also constantly surpirsed and pleased at how many others are willing to help - unless they have family in the UK, I can't reciprocate, I can only thank them all. 3. After scanning them into the computer. Divide them by families. If you are using FTM you can copy them into the scrapbook part of the program under each person. 2008 edition will even allow you to post pictures on the family group sheets. Copy them to CD ----------- Now this is an expensive route so I woud ask family, who wants one and get the money up front. CVS or Walgreens or Walmart (probably others but I have only seen these three in my area) PHOTO department prints bound photo albums. You can take the pictures and put them together like a collage or straight album page mix or match. There are usually about 20 pages. If you get an operator who enjoys their job they will be able to help you get the max in that book. Unhappy operators -----PUSH for what you want. On YOUR computer: there is a company called MYPUBLISHER.com you down load the program into your computer. Pick the number of pictures per page. Insert the pictures into each space. Type a lable under each one. You can add pages for a cost and they reduce the price at certain quantities. Just remember to add postage to your final charge because you are going to have to ship them out and with postage climbing like GAS ---------------- My daughter gave my daughter-in-law one with her daughter's first year of life. IT WAS Amazing. Really nice gift and she was able to put it on her book shelf with the rest of her family books. I can see the future --------- one for each year. Hummmmmmm Since I dont know what "great number" means I am eliminating the obvious. Photosuite is a photo program you put into your computer. It helps you view photographs and when it comes time to print them you can print collages or place the prints of one person - per page. Print our Photo quality prints on photo paper and then take all of them to Kinko, Staples, Office Max and have them bound into book. PERSONALLY ---------------- go the CVS route or MYPUBLISHING .com the books are beautiful and lovely to have forever.
