Barbara, There are a few Church's with the St. Stanislaus Church name. There is one in Nanticote Pa. It is still open it was established in 1870 and Nanticote was almost all Polish. They have a web site but they do NOT respond to record requests. My Great Grand parents lived there when they came from Poland. It looks like you have to go there to get any information. However there is another place above Scranton that is microfilming all the record for a five county area. Someone is forwarding me the information and as soon as I get it I will pass it along. Rhonda, The reason I suggested you post the original and entire images rather than cropped and pasted copies is to provide the researcher a complete exemplar of the handwriting employed. Typically, recognition of the text improves as one becomes familiar with the style of the author by simply examining as much of the corpus as can be made available. For example, there is the entry "Thomae" in the upper extract. Would you be able to decipher it correctly if the image had nothing more than that name? The letter "T" is formed using a fairly fancy script. I believe the two names you are still interested in are "Czorny" and "Rachwał". The records were at Cabrini. When Sister Helen Dirig was there she sent me very extensive information. I don't know who is handling the records now. HArrisburg has always had some records. Nancy, Sorry about that. You purchase an IRC at your local post office. The recipient (in Poland for example) takes it to his post office and sort of trades it in for postage on the letter back to you. If you make a donation up front and the priest never receives the letter not only are you out the money but you won't know whether the priest didn't receive or he's ignoring you. Hi, We wrote to several parishes in Poland. Most of them did not reply. However, when we wrote we asked the priest to also share our letter with his parishioners who might be our family (Jachimiak-maternal side) or to post the letter on their bulletin board. My husband was very fortunate. His cousin was an active member of one of the parishes and she wrote back to us. She also put us in touch with other family members and relatives on his grandmother's side (Zaworski) . Two years later we took a trip to Poland and had a wonderful time visiting with all of my husband's family all over Poland and Germany. His one cousin bought his first car so that he could take us to meet our family in Poland and Germany. No one spoke English, but they found friends and neighbors who could translate for us. We had a wonderful time and still write back and forth several times each year. Sometimes there are happy endings. Nancy, Many people have written to churches in Poland with success, myself included. However, some of us, myself included, have been ignored as well. But you must try! Your letter must be in Polish. Use the Translation Letter Writing Guide at Polish Roots The Polish Genealogy Source: http://www.polishroots.org/letters/letters_polish.htm Follow the format of listing information. That allows the priest to locate info quickly and prevents you/us from getting too wordy. Do not send money up front but do ask how you can make a donation. Once you receive information check with the list about how to send that donation. It wouldn't hurt to include a self-addressed envelope with an International Reply coupon (IRC) enclosed. Wrap it in colored paper so it isn't perceived as money when the envelope is held up to the light. I have a friend that was born on April 30 His birth cert says May 1 as the doc was not present for the birth and recorded it the day he saw the baby. Genealogy is chock full of imperfections. The letter was hard to translate it was in Old German Script. It was dated 1909. In the letter it stated that her mothers maiden name was Oleji Ritterhausen. After many hours invested in trying to find the name, I finally found my Grandmothers actual church record. The Church record was in latin. I have also found the Roman Catholic Parish that I need to write my letter to. I have been through the LDS catalog and the microfilm does not cover the time period for 1911 which is the marriage year for my grandparents. I do have the complete date. So I figured the next step was to write the Parish to try and obtain the marriage record. Has anyone wrote a letter or letters to a Catholic Parish in Poland? What was the success of your letter and did you receive the documents requested? Are there any specific tips anyone could recommend? Obviously this won't be like requesting documents from a US source so I am a little hesitant. So if anyone could share their experience I would appreciate your comments. Thank You Nancy
