    3. Hi Brian, Dobjins looks like that is the way it was spelled on the Census but the other name looks like Refacus to me. There is a Joseph and Kitty Jacobs 2 pages over on page 5 of the Census and they also listed Dobjins. One thing to note is that Poland didn't exist from 1772 until after WW 1. It was divided into 3 partitions by Russia, Prussia, and Austria. You can find much on the Internet about the partitions. People often cited Poland as the place there were born because their race was Polish. My Polish family actually lived in the partition of Austria in the area known as Galicia during the mid 1800's yet they usually said they were from Poland. The area where they lived in now the Ukraine. Because of all the changes often times the city names were changed completely or more often they were spelled in the new language. I found a reference to Dobjin in a book: The deluge. An historical novel of Poland, Sweden, and Russia. A sequel to "With fire and sword." (1893, c1891) http://www.archive.org/stream/delugehistorical01sienuoft/delugehistori cal01sienuoft_djvu.txt You can view the text of the book in various formats. It may give you a clue to where this place is located. It starts back in the 13th century and this may or may not be connected but it is the only place I found with the name if it is correct. 3. Hi Val, Tina & Debbie, Thank you for the tips. As you have probably realised I am very new to main land Europe research. As regards to these Polish place names of Dobjins and Repton it might be easier if you could look on the actual 1891 census on ancestry.co.uk in respect of Davis JACOBS born c 1859 Poland and Leah JACOBS born c 1862 Poland. The writing is not good for decyphering, or it could be me. Thanks again for your help. Brian

    3. Hi Brian, You didn't say where on the census they were recorded. I'm presuming it was the person's birth place. Repton could also be a town in Derbyshire England. I can't find a Dobjins. I checked out ShtetlSeeker - Town Search http://www.jewishgen.org/Communities/LocTown.asp and didn't find either place with that spelling. You should check the other possible spellings. Also check others living in the same area. Often people coming from the same place congregate together. There were 2,500 Jacob families in the 1891 UK and 7,500 Jacobs . I don't know if I can help but if you want me to take a look at your record for a transcription error give me the full name and residence. 3. Nancy, It was really nice of you to share all of this information. I have a question though. Do the records you listed below cover only the parishes in the city of Wl~ocl~awek? Piaseczno, in old woj. Wl~ocl~awek, is in the parish of Czarne (St. Michael the Archangel). The address is #4 in the list located here: http://www.diecezja.wloclawek.pl/?id=6&d=47 You would write it like this: Parafia s~w. Michal~a Archaniol~a Czarne 87-603 Wielgie Poland BTW There are a few Piaseczno in Poland including one in old woj. Bydgoszcz. I mention this so you'll be aware of the others and not get confused. An easy way to find out the gmina for a particular village, assuming you know the name of that village, is to use http://mapa.szukacz.pl/ type in the village name under "Miejscowos~c~" and click on Pokaz. The returns will list the gmina in which each village is located. Try it with Piaseczno. This will also show you all of the Piaszeczno in Poland! See if you can pick out your Piaseczno. Hint: it's in the powiat of Lipno. Debbie Nancy Scott wrote: > Good Morning List, > > Even though the Archiwum Diecezjalne in Wloclawek did not have the birth record of my grandparents. 1. Re: [POLAND] Looking for Leads on Grandmother - Helen ANUSZKIEWICZ - UNCORT
    2. First, I want to thank everyone who replied to my post about my Grandmother, I really appreciate your help and suggestions. Since mostly all of the replies were sent to me directly, I will post the suggestions I recieved to the lists. 1 - begin with documentation - gather birth, death, burial, obituary, SS#, WWI & WWII draft info, and any other documents I can find. 2 - check census 3 - check for frequency of name distribution in current day Poland and regional distribution 4 - check Family HIstory Library for historical documents 5 - check out on-line databases such as Ancestry.com. Family Search, WorldConnect, Rootsweb, Surname Navigator. Again, Thank you all for your responses. I appreciate your help. 3. Lois, Try searching Rootsweb's index: http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/ If you don't come up with anything for East Prussia or Paetzdorf then you might try searching on the parish name.
