    1. [POLAND] Czub siblings
    2. Mrs. MICK
    3. Hi all! I've been using the prior suggestions to search thru the Czubs in Chicago but not seeming to get further ahead. My goal was to find a record on John Czub to indicate his parents names, or maybe an obituary to indicate sibling names or find a living member for this branch of the family. I requested a death certificate for John Czub - birth 1/22/1881, death 5/24/1943, but parent names are listed as unknown, birth place as Tarnow. Don't seem to find an obituary. (His wife was Mary born 2/2/1885, death 1/3/1931) >From census records, Czub children names are Stephen, Edmund, Marion, Valerie, Joseph, Mary C, Casimir and Camilla (Camille). From a hand-written sheet of paper I have (from a deceased aunt's papers), it lists the same names but she wrote that the only one of them that had children was Camille. The note says she married Jim Meehan and they had 8 children: John, Jim Jr, Kathy, Mary, Jeffrey, Lillian, and 2 more names starting with J that I can't read. Searching around, I can't determine if Jim or Camille Meehan (born 1924) are alive. I found an obituary for a Camille F. Meehan in Chicago born same year but it only listed one daughter so I don't think that is her. Meehan seems to be a pretty common name and all her children have common names as well. My aunt's hand-written note has the most current entry written as either 1988 or 1998. It gives an address for Meehan as 6221 South Talman Ave Chicago Il. I did a reverse look-up on this address but it lists an unrelated name (Tyrone Reese) and being a male name in age bracket 55-59, he is too old to be a grandchild of a married female child. Polish church records seem to be the best way to verify that John Czub was a brother/halfbrother of my great grandmother Salomea Czub (and for identifying any other siblings), but does anyone have any further suggestions how to identify or find more records on John Czub and his descendents? thanks! mick > Date: Wed, 16 Mar 2011 14:38:52 -0700 > From: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [POLAND] Czub siblings > To: [email protected] > CC: [email protected] > > Mrs. Mick: If you have been out of the loop for a while, you really must follow the other suggestions about PGS in Chicago's website and also the LDS new online is brimming over with Czubs! 3. Dear Group: As a major protagonist on this thread, I would just add may last thought. A member of this group, Mary Snow, invited me to stand down on the 17th. It was advice I should have accepted. I truly believed that [email protected] and [email protected] were the same person. It was an extended day that started too early on March 17th!! I sincerely apologize to Mary Hubel and to this discussion group. I offer again contacts to the family name Gorniak in southern Saskatchewan. 2. Debbie Greenlee
    3. Mary, Almost everyone in Poland makes a pilgrimage, or 6, especially to Cze~stochowa. There won't be any record of this. Since you know the villages where someone was born (I couldn't follow this part of your post) you can either see if LDS has the church records on film or write to the parish and ask for records. Tokarnia and Skiby are both in the gmina of Chę~ciny, east of the city of Cze~stochowa. Tokarnia is not a very big village; only about 1,330 people. 2. Mary Snow
    3. Mary, You may wish to copy the emails you have been receiving and put them into a word processing file so you can put all the information in some order. This will help you organize the tasks of what to do next. The information provided in the December, 2007, Poland-Roots mailing list indicated that Stanley and Anna Gorniak and children were from Russian occupied Poland; they immigrated to Detroit in 1912, where they lived in Hamtramck. U. S. census records indicate that Polish was the language spoken in the home - an indicator that the family was Polish. As you indicated, their ship manifests indicated they were from Tokarnia, Kielce. The records you seek would be in civil and church records in the Kielce powiat, thought there would be no information about who raised Stanley/Stanislaus since this would be anecdotal, not official. Town names provided by Deborah Islander led to some excellent research by the mailing list members. Be sure to read all the messages from the month of December, 2007, which also include where to find the towns on a map. The town names in those posts to the mailing lists were in a message from Marie, the list manager for this list: Skiby, village Wojewodstwo (province): Swietokrzyskie Powiat (district): Kielce Gmina (township): Checiny Piekoszow, village, seat of the township Wojewodstwo: Swietokrzyskie Powiat: Kielce Gmina: Piekoszow postal code 26-065 Source: Poland-Roots December, 2007; subject lines contain Gorniak and Gurniak http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index/POLAND-ROOTS/2007-12 Roman Catholic church records for Checiny and Piekowszow have been filmed by the Latter Day Saints through 1884, which would contain information about births, deaths, and marriages for your ancestors. Using the Place Search for each gmina, click on 'View Film Notes' to see the microfilm to order here: http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp Family History Center near you, where you can rent microfilm: http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp You may also wish to use google.com to search for Kielce diocese for some additional helpful information. Google translate will help with this page for the Kielce diocese: http://www.kielce.opoka.org.pl/ http://translate.google.com There are Polish letter writing forms on the internet to aid in your correspondence for entities in Poland. The ship manifests can be found at the Ellis Island website; Steve Morse has provided a place to search for the names of passengers; you can see the manifest by using 'Click to enlarge manifest'. http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB/ellisgold.html? Ship manifest for Stanislaw Gorniak, also found by Marie; note that the December, 2007, posts also included information for the naturalization papers. Anna married Stanislaus Gorniak Feb 1908 in Tokarnia,Poland Anna came here in Aug 1912 with her 2 children . Her name was written Gurniak On the ship records and her official papers even her death certificate says Gurniak. My grandfather Stanislaus Gorniak had one half brother _____ Wojic. Stanislaus Gorniak was very sick as a young boy. He had pock marks on his face that was on the immigration papers as distinguishing features. He was taken care of by a jewish man I have been told. I think Stanislaus’ father died when he was young . *Stanislaw Gorniak came here in April 3,1912 alone to get ready for the family to come. The ship spells his first name Stanislaw Gorniak Born 4/12/1885 Or 4/13/1885 * cannot tell if 12or 13 on the papers we have. His fathers name is Joseph Gorniak Mothers name is (marked unknown) then says ________Krajowski 2 cousins say Stanisluas was Russian . One cousin is very sure of it. That is why I would love to contact his sisters . They might have papers ? My father says his father in law Stanislaus spoke 3-4 languages on e of them Russian and one of them Polish . That is all my dad 86 remembers about him. The family is practicing Roman Catholic . I was given the towns of Tokarnia ,Poland and the town of Skiby, Poland. This is all the information I can come up with. I do hope this helps find my relatives in Poland or any birth certificates or marriage certificates for my grandparents. Thank you to all for all of your time. Mary Hubel

    1. [POLAND] From Admin Re: All Capital Letters
    2. MJDallas
    3. There's nothing in the mailing list rules (either for this list in particular or RootsWeb lists in general) that dictates that messages *must* be written in a specific case format, and since it's clear that Mary's use of all-caps stems from a vision problem and not lack of 'netiquette, I'm certainly not going to insist she type in the standard upper/lower case format. I imagine that it must be somewhat time-consuming for her to type even one email in all-caps and much worse to attempt to use lower case letters that are very hard for her to see. Having said that, let's close this subject. Those list members who find all-caps to be annoying have the option to delete those messages without reading them. :-) Hopefully, we'll all take to heart Eugene's words and show a bit of compassion and tolerance. -Marie

    3. Thank you for this message. I have often copied something that was all in capital letters, and then tried to go through it and change it, but that was very tedious for long articles. This is much simpler, and quicker. To highlight and copy and paste with ctrl-c and ctrl-v speeds things up tremendously! Eugene M. 3. Friends, I know what the idea is behind the rule that all capital letters is like shouting, but I have never found it to be offensive in any way. I have also read similar diatribes against all capital letters on other sites, and the reason it was done was due to one kind of physical disability or another. Personally, I would much rather read letters in ALL CAPS than to miss out on helping someone, or some one helping me. If such a small variance from perfect form can be so offensive as to lead to a long string of emails wasting space, I would suggest that those who feel it necessary to "correct" the individual, please either learn to live with it, or resign from the message board. That latter is only for those with no compassion for disabilities, and who cannot change. I have had so very much success with following the various letters on this board and others that I can only be thankful for anyone who becomes an active member. Mary Hubel: Please continue to write, and write all in capital letters as much as you wish. I will read every letter you write, and I will not be offended by such an insignificant variance as all capital letters. The same is my wish for everyone who writes for help or to give information. I love you all. Eugene M. 1. [POLAND] from admin about off topic thread
    2. MJDallas
    3. Folks, Yikes! I know we all like to pretend to be Irish on St. Patty's Day, but did we all celebrate a little too much yesterday? LOL First off, Mrs. Mick and Mary Hubbel are two different people, as already clarified by them both. Mary's eye disease requires her to type in all caps, and we should respect that. If my memory serves me properly, I recognize Mrs. Mick as someone who contacted me years ago about a surname in common using the same signature. So, we can lay that issue to rest as well. As a woman married to a guy who insists on referring to our surname as, "Dallas, like the Cowboys" when we live right outside of Philadelphia, I can well understand the sensitivity to certain references under specific circumstances. (For those who don't follow American football, the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles are arch rivals.) So, let's just chalk this up to a St. Patty's Day aberration and move back on topic, please. Regards, Marie Poland-Roots list admin

BUT THIS HAS BEEN TOO STRESSFUL ON ME. WITH THE BACK AND FORTH OF MY CAPS AND NOW THIS ACCUSED OF USING 2 EMAILS ! I HAVE GOTTEN SOME IDEAS FROM LOTS OF NICE FOLKS I WILL TRY THEM. I HAVE EVEN FOUND A PERSON IN PA WHOS EMAIL ADDRESS IS ATTACHED TO PETRUS MY GRANDMOTHERSMAIDEN NAME BUT NOT RELATED. I GUES I GOT A NEW FRIEND OUT OF THIS. I WILL NOT SEE WHAT I WRITE BUT MAYBE THE SPELL CHECK WILL KEEP ME ON TOP OF THING S? I GUESSS HESE ARE GOOD WAYS TO START. THANKS AGAIN, MARY HUBEL Maybe the same person has registered with two different e-mails, so she might receive messages on two different computers, perhaps one at home and one at work. That is not against the rules. If you want to do that too, go right ahead. And if she signs her name Mrs. Mick, perhaps, just maybe, her last name might be Mick? That's not offensive. It's her name. Should she not contribute to the discussion on March 17 because you don't like her name? Lighten up.
