    1. Re: Bednarowicz and Brzezinski from Zagorow
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/hdC.2ACI/226.1042.1 Message Board Post: Dear Sebastian, I was searching the internet about Zagorow and found your message. I'm glad to know that there are still Bednarowicz families in the area of Zagorow. I couldn't tell from your e-mail if you still lived in Poland or some place else. You mentioned a insurgent who had escaped from Russia and settled in Germany. Do you know what his name was? My mother (now deceased) had gotten a letter from a Martin Bednarowicz who lived at one time in Duisburg, Ruhrorf and Gelsenkirchen, Germany. This was many years ago and everything was in German. His parents where Franz Bednarowicz 1877-1938 and Hedwig Stefanski 1890-1970. They had come from Poland just before WWII. He had sent family tree information, but it was in German, so we didn't understand much of it. In his family there was a Zofnf b.1908, Alexander b.1910, Martin b.1911, Hedwig b.1913, Sophia b.2926, Han b.1917, Franz b.1926, Ann b.1928. We figured that he had been a cousin to my grandfather Frank and had changed the! re 1st names to German names. My Grandfather Frank had a brother Edward and 4 sisters. I don't know what ever happened to him. His wife's name was Sofia. An uncle of my grandfather was Ignacy Bednarowicz and he had immigrated to Everson, Pennsylvania, USA. I know my grandfather had other uncles but I don't know who they were. The only one that immigrated to the US was Ignacy. My brothers and I are planning a trip to Germany and Poland in the fall of this year. We had gone to Poland in 1999 and visited our relatives in Zagorow. Actually they live in Bukowe a small town outside of Zagorow. One family lives on a very poor farm. The other family we visited, lived on the farm that my grandmother had grown up on. Both families we visited were on my grandmothers side. We were on a planned tour and had taken a side trip to Zagorow and had hired a driver for the day. This time we are going on our own and plan to spend more time visiting the family. I know my grandfather had lived in the town of Zagorow and worked as a blacksmith before he immigrated in 1906. His family must have lived in the town also, but I don't know that for sure. You mentioned that your family still lives in Poland. What is the name of the town? We would like to look them up when we go. It would be nice to know some more about the family. I hope to hear from you. Carolyn

We had visited there about 6 yrs. ago and plan to go there this Sept. The area around Zagorow is mostly farm land and now is part of the Nadwarcianski Nature Park. We are looking for any sites of interest around the area. I keep looking on the internet for someplace we can stay while we are there, but cannot find anything. This time we plan to spend some time looking the area over. The other time we stopped one day off a tour.

On the passenger list she shows the town of Zions when she arrived in New York. Her father saw her off and we can olny make out the town letters as LAKS------.She was married and when her husband came over a year earlier he stated he left her in Skontz. Her social security only has Posan listed as where she was from. One of her children took citizenship and listed her town as spelled as Xinsz (which could be Zions. Her husband came from Kozmin, I found papers on him. It is all confusing because spelling seems to be off. I have an old map and I keep hopeing something will pop out. I understand the man and women never traveled too far from home to marry, I hope that is true. Thank you again and would appreciate if you have any ideas about the towns. Regards,BW

According to Shtetleseeker and current Polish maps, there are three villages in Poland with the name Kozmin. Do you know which one it was? There are no villages in Poland with the name Skontz or Xions. Posen is the German word for Poznan. Poznan is a city, but it is also the name of a much larger area, similar to a state in the U.S. You said that Wiiktorja was actually born on a farm, so it's likely that she was born in a village in the state of Poznan. You won't be able to find the records until you find the name of that village.
