I found them in ship's lists, census, etc., a long time ago, but no great clues. I am aware of the varioss letter pronunciations in the Polish language, and can just go by what I see in records I do find taking that in mind. Isn't Grudziac/Grudziadz in W. Prussia? I guess it is a possibility, and will go with that... Problem with Rutkowski is that there are LOTS of them all over Poland... Author: bhhaling Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.ceeurope.poland.wielkopolski/3508.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Should also have mentioned that in older days "th" in German was pronounced as a "t" (e.g. das Thal (valley) is today's das Tal) so your Ruthowski could easily be spelled Rutowski by someone who just heard it spoken. The same goes for the "w" which would have been pronounced with a "v" sound and could turn up as Ruthovski or Rutovski. Makes researching records real fun! Author: bhhaling Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.ceeurope.poland.wielkopolski/3508.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Suggest you also keep in mind that Grudziadz was called Graudenz in the days of the German Empire and until 1945. Try googling both names and you will find a lot of historical information which could help. Doing the same with Posen/Poznan could also reveal clues. The importance of the historical knowledge is that official records from this period would probably be in German, not Polish. Good luck Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: DavidWilsonUSPL Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.ceeurope.poland.wielkopolski/3508.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi. I can't recall why the place name means something to me (though it somehow does - and maybe will eventually come to me), but there's at least one place name in your region of interest spelled Grudziac (it has a Polish pronunciation symbol "tail" below the "a"). Also in that same region is at least one other possibility, named Grudziadz (again with a "tail" below the "a"). If you do a web search for either spelling, with or without "Poznan" also included in the search, you'll get numerous hits. Also search on RootsWeb, putting each of those spellings in your word(s) search request. Odds are it's the Grudziac spelling that will prove the relevant one for you, though definitely seriously consider the Grudziadz spelling, too. Regarding one of the surnames you mentioned, I'm sure it should be Rutkowski and not Ruthowski. Do web and RootsWeb searches putting the Rutkowski spelling in your search request, and I'm sure you'll find numerous items of potential interest, some hopefully that will ALSO mention a Grudziac or Grudziadz (and Poznan). FYI: Under Prussian/German domination, Poznan went by the name and spelling of Posen. Keep that in mind, when doing searches. Hoping all or at least some of this will help. Best of luck! 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: anettka Surnames: Papinski, Papjinski, Ruthowski Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.ceeurope.poland.wielkopolski/3508/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have been looking for my Papinski ancestors place of origin for quite awhile. The only mention of places in all the records I've found is Grudzoc and Poznan. In one record Grudzoc had a "?" after it, like the priest had no idea if spelling was right or if he didn't hear all of it. Hubert and Juliana Papinski (sometimes spelled as Papjinski) came to US in 1872, with 6 children, on a 'feather'ship, Doctor Barth. Juliana's father was Francizek Ruthowski. Two girls later became nuns, and the info I was given indicated that the family was 'likely farmers'. If anyone has knowledge of these surnames in the Poznan province of 1872, I'd love to hear about it. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. How did I know when the naturalization process began? After September 1906 all arrivals had to be verified....a court clerk had to physically go through the manifest and when they located the immigrant's name, etc. on the manifest they confirmed the finding by writing on the manifest the certificate of arrival number and date to the right of the name. The first two numbers tell you the state where the naturalization process took place. This is why naturalization papers after September 1906 will have the ports and dates of departure and arrival, the name of the ship and the town where the immigrant lived.
