Thanks so much for sending me this information. And for going to the miner records for me. The relatives were Stephan (Steven) Baranowski b.1855? (my great-grandfather); George (aka Wojceich) Baranowski (Stephan's younger brother), b 1871 or 1974); John Baranowski (possibly an older brother of Stephan) bc 1853; and Andrew Baranowski (brother definitely of John, possibly of Stephan and George). I just learned about Andrew tonite, from a descendant of John!) Thanks so much!!. My gg-grandparents were Andrew and Mariana Baranowski. Her maiden name may have been Michalska. She was born in Dec of 1826. Her passenger list enters her last residence as "Kotlin", which could be the small village of Kotlin near the aforementioned towns. There is also a town in that area called Baranow. I don't know if there is a connection there. Her son Stephan bc 1855 (my g-grandfather) came to the US in 1881. His father was noted as "Andrew" on Stephan's (U.S.) marriage record in 1881. Mariana came over with a younger son(?) named Wojciech (aka Adalbert; George) c 1890. George was almost 17 yrs younger than Stephan. He noted his father on a marriage record as "Laurence". The 1895 Polk directory lists Mariana as "[wid Laurence]". (Perhaps she married another Baranowski after Andrew's death??) After emigrating from Poznan, they lived in Calumet, Michigan, but during the 1910s and 1920s, parts of the family moved to the Chicago area. Stephan and George may have had an older brother named John (bc. 1853) who lived for a time in Calumet and whose family lived outside of Chicago area (Whiting?). Previously to going to Calumet, John lived in Ohio and Calumet, Michigan. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Author: taskmatster Surnames: Sobczak Nowak Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.ceeurope.poland.wielkopolski/3513/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Looking for any information on these surnames in the Posen area. I have a Michal (Michael) Sobczak who was born 1867 in Posen. He married Constance Nowak born abt. 1868 in Posen. They came with their 10 children to Milwaukee, WI around 1913. I don't know if Sobczak was their true polish name or if it was slightly altered, their first names were slightly changed when they came to the US. I know their headstones have their true polish first names & say Sobczak. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. All of my Olej(y)niczak's & Antoszewski's were from Kolonia Czeszewo as far back as 1815. Kol. Czeszewo is on the SW edge of the current Poznan voivodship and relatively far from both Chomenice and Poznan. I am not sure where the Olejniczaks came from before the 1800's. Of course, Polish people historically relocated because of war, economy, etc. However, Sebastian is not a known family name in my Oleyniczak tree. I have not seen it in my searches, either. I also believe that 'Oley(j)niczak' is a fairly common surname and not necessarily with a single source. Someday, Marit, we will just compare DNA--but that's a long ways away. We have talked before about our apparently unrelated Jaskiewicz ancestors. The Jaskiewicz's are not from the same branch as the Olejniczak's. Email me and we can talk some more. They had a daughter with name Agathe Oleyniczak. She was born 1797-01-24 in Chomenice, near Konarzewo, in the area of Poznan. Agathe Oleyniczak married Stanislaus Mackowiak. They had 3 children, who were born in Chomenice too. I have any ancestors with surname Jaskiewicz too, but without relations to Oleyniczak/Olejniczak. My Jaskiewicz-ancestors came from Dopiewiec, near Konarzewo. Marit Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
