Constance Sobczak was my grandfather's sister. His name was Jan Nowak. He lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He, his wife, and daughter immigrated to America in 1900. They sailed from Bremen, Germany in May and arrived in Baltimore about 10 days later. They settled first in Pennsylvania, with my grandmother's family, name of Bajczyk. Around 1903/04 they moved to Milwaukee. They had nine children. The youngest, my mother, is the only surviving child. Her name is Victoria, she was born in 1919. I asked what she remembers about Constance Nowak. Michael and Constance lived on the South side of Milwaukee. If you are not familiar with Milwaukee, this was a large Polish area. She remembers them living near St. Helen's Catholic Church. This parish still exists. The location is on S. 10th Street in Milwaukee, I am sorry I do not have the exact address. In 1946, the time of my grandfather's death, my mother thinks that Michael Sobjczak had already died, but she is not sure. I will see if I can check my grandfather's funeral book to see if his name is listed along with Constance's. There was another sister living in Milwaukee. At this time I do not have her name. I will try to find this in the next day or so. I have very little information about Jan Nowak. On his naturalization application, he gave his town of birth as being Ostrowo and his wife's town of birth as being Rzegocin. Prior to immigrating, he listed as Germany as being his place of residence. He gives the ship's name as being the "Frankfurt". There is a story that he fled Poland to avoid being constripted into the army, but I am not sure if this is true. In your reply, did you say that Michael Sobjczk and Jan Nowak were from the same town? I believe that Jan Nowak was born about 1874/5. Actually narrowed the area down by myself and then I found some luck--located my people in parish records right here on the net! The parish records helped me to correct my incorrect spelling. Only took me 25 years to locate my Grandfathers birth record! My husbands family are all from Poland--but let me tell you--they speak, read and write Polish--but when it comes to translating into English--they aren't any better than I am with Polish! :) Their English isn't good and I don't have a clue with Polish. So, let me thank you again for your efforts. Every little bit helps. Will also help others--I'm sure!! Sue Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. In the Polish language, words change their endings depending upon how they're used in a sentence (like Latin does). It looks like the place name was written in the locative case, giving it the -wcu ending. Zernikach should probably be Zerniki - there's a Zerniki northeast of Janowiec Wielk. and east of Wloszanowo. The same as Janowcu, Zernikach looks like it's Zerniki written in the locative case. As for Pozan, it should be Posen (German) or Poznan (Polish). Knowing what the place names are in the "regular" (nominative) case will save you lots of wasted time trying to figure out where these places are. You won't find them on a map using the spellings as written in your message. :-) -MJ Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. These maps can also be seen in the Gallery layer of Google Earth, Rumsey Historical Maps layer. All the maps contain rich information about the past and represent a sampling of time periods (1680 to 1930), scales, and cartographic art, resulting in visual history stories that only old maps can tell. Each map has been georeferenced, thus creating unique digital map images that allow the old maps to appear in their correct places on the modern globe. Some of the maps fit perfectly in their modern spaces, while others (generally earlier period maps) reveal interesting geographical misconceptions of their time and therefore have to be more distorted to fit properly in Google Maps and Earth.
