    1. Re: Radolin/Floth records
    2. Beth Christianson
    3. Hello, again. Someone asked me what I meant by women's surnames being affected by German rules of grammar. I am working from what I remember from high school, so I STRONGLY suggest you verify the following info, but I THINK this may help explain it. Anyone else who can shed light on this, or offer a more accurate explanation, please do so. As far the women's surnames - I noted that many women's surnames in these records have "en" added to the surname as it is listed for their husbands/father, etc. For example, for a man the surname would be listed as "Torno" but is listed for a woman as "Tornoen." If I recall my German grammar rules correctly, that is a way to "feminize" the name when it is being written because the holder of the name was female. I think it was about this period in Europe that rules for surname usage were transforming to where the offspring were being given the father's last name, and I believe the female suffix was being used as naming rules were being modified. German as a language designates nouns as Masculine, Feminine and Neuter, with the preceding article reflecting the form, i,.e. "the", as in "Der Mann" (The Mann) vs. "Die Frau" (The Woman). English has no such equivalent - it uses "the" for everything. A Norwegian version of this was the old system of adding "sen" or "datter" to the father's given name to form a last name for the offspring, depending on whether it was a son or daughter. Hence Johann Oleson's son's surname was "Johannsen" while a daughter would bear the surname "Johannsdatter." (This would eventually become "Johnsen" as it was anglicized/Americanized). This practice of differentiating between male and female offspring pretty much died out by the turn of the last century though. It would be a worthwhile topic to do more research on. Hope this helps. Just wanted to pass along a wonderful resource I discovered for people researching ancestors from the town of FLOTH, in the Trzcianka area, Czarnikau, Posen, Prussia. LDS film #0752761 has church records for Radolin, of which Floth was/is a part. Floth was not mentioned as part of the description of the film; however, it is included in these records. The official description of the film is "Evangelical parish register of baptisms, marriages and deaths in Radolin, Posen, Preußen, Germany, now Radolin (Trzcianka), Poznan, Poland. Includes civil transcripts." The years the film covers are from 1773-1854. (BTW, the way I found it is someone told me that Floth is now known as Radolinek. I saw this record title, guessed that there was a relationship, gambled and ordered the film. It paid off. Not bad for $3.50.) I have yet to find that the 0808XXX series of LDS microfilm records from Czarnikau included records from Floth (although I saw the name in one index-but those pages were missing :-( ) However, the above film provided me with quite a bit of info about STEINKE ancestors and relations. Other names I noted included SCHMIDT, KRUMREY, FERCHO, WECKWERTH (WEKWERT), PRIEBE, SONNENBURG, REDEMANN, WELK, KRUGER, NICKEL, ZARBAUK, possibly PONTO (though don't quote me on that), and numerous others. There are spelling variations to the names (e.g., in some older records, STEINKE is spelled STEINIKE) and on many women's surnames the suffix "EN" is added, I suppose in keeping with German rules of grammar. Still, they're there, and fairly legible. This is the first film I've found where Floth is directly mentioned/included, and I thought some of you might want to know about it. Hope this helps. Good luck in your research! Beth C.

    3. Beth, Thanks so much for telling all of us about this resource for the Radolin/Floth records near Trzcianka. This sounds like a really good find. Ponto is a familiar name in the Trzciana area. Some of them intermarried with my Quiram family. At least one Ponto immigrated to the U.S. and attended the same church in Illinois where some of my Quirams lived. Steinke, Priebe, Sonnenburg, Schmidt, and Kruger are also names that intermarried with the Quirams. There is a very active Steinke group which will be interested in this information as well. Also the variant spelling of Steinike. Thanks again for the information. Glenn Gohr (Trzcianka List Manager)

    3. Helps if I give the film numbers: 0808104 thru 0808124, 1201276 thru 1201280. The 0808XXX series are the ones I'm working with now, they have been a big help - they're earlier in the time period. Good luck. They are microfilms for Czarnikau and contain civil transcipts of church records for the region from 1815-1874, both Catholic and Protestant. I looked for church records in this area before but missed these, and have found them to be a gold mine. These have enabled me to "jump the pond" nand I intend to mine them for all they're worth for Steinkes, Ritters, Schnells and other related family lines. For anyone doing research in this area during this time period, these films might be a great help to you. Be warned: the texts are in Latin, German and Polish, and some are quite difficult to read. Even so, if you know basic terms in each language and have an idea of what you're looking for, you should be able find something if it was originally recorded. I know I have. Hope this helps someone. Best of success, Beth C. chris205@tc.umn.edu
