Surnames: Filipowicz, Okoniewski Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/RdC.2ACI/22.190.1 Message Board Post: I'm searching for the Filipowicz surname in the Volyn' or Volyns'ka region of Ukraine also. I recently received the Social Security Application for Bronislaw Filipowicz, on which he states that he was born in Roziszcze, Poland, on 15 July 1889. The closest spelling to that town that I've found is what is now called Rozhyshche, formerly Rozyszcze, Poland. Bronislaw was the son of Andrej Filipowicz and Anna Okoniewski. In about 1912 he came to America and eventually settled in Hamtramck, Michigan. But I'm puzzled because it seems that many people who lived in that town were Lutherans. I believe that Andrej and Anna were Roman Catholic or perhaps Greek Catholic. Do you know much about this particular town or of any Filipowicz families who lived near there? Was there a Catholic parish there also?
