Gene, Sejny records are on microfilm dating from 1884 back to 1798. If Witold was born about 189 or so, you know his parents were at least about 21 or so when he was born. This puts you back to the 1870 or so. You can check this LDS site to see what records they have available on microfilm: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=localitysearch&columns=*,180,0. You can find a local LDS Family History Center: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp Records are filed by the religion a person practiced. There are also civil records, which can be searched. What I have found in this time frame is that most people married at the age of 21 or older. There are only a few in my family, who married before they were 21. I've been able to tract my grandmother's branch of my tree using microfilm back to my 3rd, 4th and 5th great grandparents, and have found offspring living in Poland, Germany and the US, who are my 6th cousins. Now I plan to go back to Poland and visit the necessary churches to further my research. The archives do not have what I need, and neither to the LDS. Many times when people left Poland, they did not give their exact place of birth or residence. Suwalki was also a province, a powiat and city, plus a region, which extended into Lithuania. Your best bet to pinpoint where your research needs to begin is to find a record in the US, which gives you the place of birth. It can be a Social Security application, a marriage record, birth records on children and in death records, or even in obituaries. Before searching in Poland, to save you from a wild goose chase, you need to be very specific in locating that place of birth. You can search many parish records before you find the correct parish. This data tells you how many adults with the LINKOWSKI name were living in Poland in 1990: Linkowski 877 Wa:43, BP:1, Bs:12, By:57, Ch:6, Ci:5, El:14, Gd:33, Go:21, JG:3, Kl:78, Ka:17, Ki:2, Kn:6, Ko:4, Lg:12, Ls:31, Lu:13, Lo:11, Ld:43, NS:5, Ol:7, Op:31, Os:2, Pl:4, Pl:18, Po:138, Ra:4, Sr:3, Sk:30, Sl:22, Su:2, Sz:54, Tb:1, To:46, Wb:10, Wl:33, Wr:29, ZG:26 There were 877 adult men and woman with this surname. Only two of them were living in the old province of Suwalskie, which is where the cities of Sejny and Suwalki were located before January 1, 1999. Today these places are in the province of Podlaskie. On 1-1-99, Poland reorganized. They went from 49 provinces to 16. In 2002 there were 2 men and 2 woman in the powiat (county) of Bialystocki, 8 men and 8 women in the powiat of Grajewski, 5 men and 5 women in the city of Bialystok and 1 male in the city of Suwalki. I have a telephone book from Suwalki. There are 11 people living in the city of Sejny with the last name of NAMIOTKO. If you would like to have their names, telephone numbers and the name of the street where the live, let me know, and I will send them to you in private. There's even a Witold NAMIOTKO in the list. You must be related to these people. Maybe they will have more information on your LINKOWSKI family. Tina, Thanks for the information. I have been exploring some of the LDS microfilms for the Sejny area. It seems as though Sejny is kind of like additional subdivistion in addition to a city to me. Or maybe Sejny was a religious area division. LDS has many different city records listed for Sejny. Lots of records to search through and not sure if I have narrowed down the search enough yet. His death record listed just Poland. Just like his Marriage Application. I can't locate any Naturalization/Citizenship Information. The LDS microfilms are slow going. The only record I have for Location is "Sejny" from NY ship manifest and "Synia" from the Hamburg, Germany emigration record. Supposedly they were in contact with relatives during the wars, but that was before my time and the 3 aunts have long passed who would have had that information. The LDS Poland microfilms are very difficult to read sometimes. Sort of seems like a block of time between 1870-1871 is missing from the LDS records also. I am not sure if the Poland State Archives in Suwalki may have different records or some other church records in Poland may help. I don't speak Polish and that seems to be a necessity for interacting with the Archives. I am pursuing translation assistance for corresponding with the State Archives. I thank you for the Phone Book Information. I am sort of stuck at this timeframe. They are Roman Catholic records as they were R.C. I haven't located any information. Looking for marriages/deaths also, but no familiar names. Poking along here in Southwest Florida.
