My paternal grandfather was Jan Zaniewski. He immigrated to America in 1891. He probably returned to congress Poland some time later as my father was born there in 1895 or 96. The family came to the U.S. in stages. Probably the last being my father John(Jan) and his mother around 1908. His mother's name was Antonina Chituk. This family was from Perstun and Soposhkin which are now in Belarus. My mother was Franciska Cituk. According to the manifest for the passenger ship she arrived on in December 1912, she was from Bogaty, Suwalki. Where this village is today in Poland I do not know. Do you? My father's family were farmers on eastern Long Island, New York. Do we have a connection? Joan Zaniskey

Does anyone know of a town/region with that name or a close phonetic? Thanks, Jarrod

Have you checked the Dziennik Chicagoski Death Notice Index databases at www.pgsa.org for a death for Maciej? There is a Maciej Sawicki shown on the 1890-1929 database, date of death 15 May 1921, one of the names mentioned in the obit is Czeslaw Kochanski. Info on how to order a copy of the obit can be found on the website. This may not be your Maciej Sawicki, but I thought is was worth looking at. If this is your Maciej, you can obtain a copy of his death certificate through the Cook County Clerk's Office. Information can be found on the website: http://www.cookctyclerk.com/sub/vital_records.asp Catherine In a message dated 5/10/04 11:44:00 PM Central Daylight Time, gervasejn@yahoo.com writes: "Katarzyna Sawicka" came to America on the SS Blucher which left Hamburg on July 29, 1908 and arrived in NYC on August 8, 1908. She was 30, female, and married. Her last residence was Bialystok. She left behind her mother, Urszula Cylwik, residing in Krypno. Her destination was her husband Maciej Sawicki in Chicago, IL. She traveled with her children, Jadwiga, age 4 and Jan, age 2. I could not find Maciej in the ship records. Ellisislandrecords.org may have mistranscribed his last name. Do you know anything more? When did Maciej die? I know he was alive in 1920 but dead by 1930. I have Katarszyna's death date as October 16, 1954. Were there any other relatives that I didn't list above? Do you know who Harriet married? It wasn't Richard as that was her son's name. You can reach me at gervasejn@yahoo.com if that would be easier for you. Thank you, Jason

My g-grandfather was Simon Isha Pianko. He had at least a brother or sister, but their name is unknown. Simon Isha Pianko married Cecile Tillie Vinovich and had Ida, Tillie b. 1889, Frieda (Frances - my grandmother) b. 1890, Abraham b. 1900, and Morris b. 1908. Simon's brother or sister married unknown and had Ida, Jenny, Eva, Abe, Louis, Jeanette, Esther, and Lillian* b. 1913. Cecile Tillie Vinovich (my g-grandmother on my mom's mom side) had a brother Samuel Vinovich (my g-grandfather on my mom's dad's side). Samuel Vinovich married Nasha (Edna) Vopniltski d. 1925 and had Moshe, Louis, and Max (my grandfather). Simon Pianko's daughter Ida was killed in the Holocaust with her husband and sons. Tillie married Samuel Kozloff, Frances married Max Vinovich (my grandparents), Abe never got married, and Morris married Lillian Pianko*, his first cousin. From what I have been told, my grandmother Frances Pianko was born 19 April 1890, and she and her family were either from Bialystok or Czevitcha, Poland. Since I have never found Czevitcha even on an older map, I am wondering if it is possible that it could be Bialystok or Czestochowa? My grandfather Max Vinovich was born 16 March 1887 in Lomza, Russia-Poland. Any help would be greatly appreciated... my email address is mark.rosenblum@juno.com. Thank you!

Did you check these names on Ellis Island? What was your mother's first name? The name Comenetz or Keminetz are rather not Polish and not from White Russia. Another name that you mentioned is probably STANKIEWICZ. Stankiewicz is a name very popular now in Bialystok. What is your mother's maiden name Comenetz or Stankiewicz? How old was she when she came to USA? She did say she was a "White Russian". My husband and I are planning a trip to Poland and will stop in Bilaystok. I would like to know whether my information on her birth place was correct. Unfortuantely she has passed on so infomration is limited. Any help would be appreciated.
