Galicia was the name of the Austrian province of occupied Poland. This area was in the southeastern part of Poland. See these URLs for a map of Galicia: http://www.polishroots.org/genpoland/gal.htm http://feefhs.org/maps/ah/ah-galic.html There are currently four towns in Poland named Narty. All are in the northern part of Poland and nowhere near Galicia. Another possibility is that your Narty it's no longer in Poland. In 1885, there were 17 towns in occupied Poland called Narty. It's also possible that Narty is a misspelling. It could be Naraty or Nart (there is a Nowy Nart and a Stary Nart in southern Poland) or anything else, really. You'll probably need to find another resource that gives their birthplace. Have you obtain a copy of the marriage record (not just a certificate) for Anna Fila or any baptismal records for her children? Many times the church records will give the exact name of the birthplace. How about naturalization records for either Marie or Anna? If they naturalized after 1921 (when women were not granted automatic citizenship though their husbands) the exact place of birth is required on the paperwork. If they did not naturalize and were still alive in 1940, they would have been required to fill out an Alien Registration form which would give the same info. What other resources have you obtained to find the birthplace of these women besides census and the Hamburg passenger manifest? MJ
