It looks like my Winkler/Borowski family came from Warsaw. They arrived in New York 5 Nov. 1890 on the Werra out of Bremen and Southampton. Mateusz is 30, his wife (age 24) and daughter (3) are both named Marie (poss. Macie- it's hard to read). Son Johann is 10 months. All are from Russia, and they bring one piece of luggage. John Charles Winkler's WWII draft card gives him a DOB of 12 Jan. 1890 and a birthplace of Warsaw. Mary Agnes Winkler was likely born 25 March 1887. How long they lived in Warsaw is another question. The ship manifest gives Mateusz' occupation as farmer. There is evidence of farms in Warsaw in this era (http://www.warsawcity.net/History/warsawtrivia.htm). Known in America as Matthew Winkler, his Naturalization Papers say he was born in Prussia, but everything else I see says Russian Poland. And because nothing is easy with my ancestors, family says the name was changed to Winkler in Poland. They went to the local priest, who changed the name to Winkler to protect them from the Russians. I don't know if this occurred before or after Mateusz' marriage. They settled in Exeter, NH. Take care, Kevin
