None of them are Jewish. I don't think you can generalize about those names ending with those letters. You have to look at the whole name. Poland was one of the few countries who were tolerant and supportive of Jewish coming to their country. They were often the skilled craftsmen, shoppe keepers, and money lenders, since in many countries they couldn't own land. In some areas, they also farmed like tenent farmers, but in other places they were relegated to towns. Russia limited their movement and where they could live, hence the "settlement of the Pale" is where many were found. Anettka
Hi--I may be wrone, but the 'wicz'-ending to a surname is often Jewish. I think the Cath.-Jewish connection in Poland is fascinating. There was a lot of mixture, often 'shadowy,' i.e. no one talked about, but not uncommon. I had an uncle 'Izzy,' and it dawned on me that he had to have been Jewish; his last name ending in 'wicz.' He was much-loved, and accepted by the family, but no one brought this subject up. He was a shop-owner, a clue. Because the Polish Gentile peasantry, aristocracy disdained entrepreneurship. These are all generalizations, of course, to take with a grain of salt//Ms. Theo Skowronek// On 11 Jun 2005 pgorecki@ozemail.com.au wrote: > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AdC.2ACE/873.2.1 > > Message Board Post: > > As far as I am aware, all my Rozmyslowicz were catholics.
