    3. Hi Robert: The below is a very interesting story. I have never heard that before and I thank you for sharing it with everyone. I don't know if you know this, but it is said that Frederich Pfaff is the father to George. Thanks again for sharing the story. 3. We all seem to have a George Poff in our linage, mine goes as follows: (I am descended from George's daughter, Mary, who married Zadoc Stewart.) 1820 Clinton Co., Ohio Census has George Poff : Males under 10 (1),  16-26 (2),  45+ (1)    Females under 10 (1), 10-16 (1), 16-26 (2), 45+ (1) 1830 Delaware Co., Indiana Census has George Poff neighbor to Zadoc Stewart with Samuel Poff and Henry Poff living almost as close (one family in between) Males under 5 (1), 15-20 (1), 60-70 (1) Females 15-20 (1), 40-50 (1) The disparity between George's wife age of 45+ in 1820 and 40-50 in 1830 and the apparent birth of a son between 1825-1830, leads to the conclusion his first wife died and he re-married (a George Poff is recorded marrying a Elizabeth Davis Nov 22, 1823 in Clinton Co., Ohio) This is the story of George's mother. (as told by Susan Stewart Canoyer 1835-1935) "Piracy or Robbery on the high seas was common in the early ages of 1700-1800's. A Pirate vessel had no national flag, and would attack vessels of all nations. By 1825 most piracy was wiped out. Captain Allen was the captain of one of these pirate ships. He came ashore and anchored at a port in Germany. He enticed seven young German girls to go aboard to look at his goods. Which consisted of jewelry, silks, anything young girls would be interested in buying. Before they could get to shore, he set sail for America. These girls never saw their parents or their homeland again. The last time they saw their parents they were standing on the shore, screaming and weeping, as the distance between them increased. When they reached America, Captain Allen sold these girls to well to do Settlers for their passage to America. They were to work for a given number of years to obtain their freedom. One of these girls was …. (Mary Poff's grandmother). She did housework and chores for the family to whom she was sold . One morning very early, she was at the barn doing the milking. She heard horrible screams coming from the house. The Indians often raided whole Settlements, driving off livestock, killing all members of the family, and setting fire to anything they left. She was so frightened, instead of trying to reach the house, where she too would have been murdered or worse, she ran into the woods. Trying to get out of sight she crawled into a hollow log. When the noise and confusion quieted down, she knew the Indians had left. She tried to get out of the log, but found she could not. She was trapped in this log for three days. A neighbor with his dog was out looking for his livestock, which the Indians had stolen or driven away, when the little dog found her in the log. The man freed her and took her to his home."

    1. [Poff] Return to list
    2. F. Mendell
    3. After several months absence, I have returned to the list. I am Freeman Mendell. My grandmother was Sadie Frances Poff, daughter of Andrew James Poff, son of George Poff. I have discovered, due to some folks on this list, that Andrew James fought on both sides of the Civil War. He started out as a Confederate and finished as a Yankee. He was born in Virginia but was in Clinton, Tennessee when he joined the Union Army. I have sent off to NARA for his wife's Union Army pension application. I sent it off in June and have not heard anything yet. I understand that NARA is not sending anything out right now. Anyone who has information or can offer advice, please do so. Thanks Freeman Mendell

    2. Barb Yes, I know what you mean. I have spent some time in two days and have wrapped most of gifts. I don't mean eight hours a day or anything like that, just taking it a bit at a time. Just a couple more gifts to buy, a little sewing to do, but now can relax a little bit and skim on through. Nice to hear from you. Have a wonderful Christmas and God bless. Midge

    3. Hi Midge, Thanks for sending this to me. I have been so busy with things here at home that I haven't had time to take care of genealogy very much. 2. Barb I thought this would be of interest to you. I have been busy scrolling through the 1891 census in London and finding a second cousin from way back, but this caught my eye as she seemed totally out of her territory. Louisa Pfaff living at 17 Hanfield Rd., Hammersmith. She worked for a Watchmaker and his wife who came from Scotland originally. She was 20, a domestic servant from Germany, Baden I believe. I'm sure it wasn't Bader. (her name may instead have been Louise, as it is hard to read raw microfische) In the census it was 12/42 Folio 153 and Page 17 Hadn't heard or seen an email for a long time, from you. Midge

    3. Hi: Just thought. Have you ordered a copy of Charles death certificate or Social Security Application yet? Definately the SSDI application will have his parents listed. You have to lists it even if they were deceased when you filled out the application. Unfortunately the cost is now $27.00, Used to be $7.00. I guess they had too many requests. If you haven't done this and are willing to shell out the money the SSDI is probably the better way to get his parents names. Death certificates don't always have the parents names. Depends on who is giving the information and if they know it. 3. Sorry to take so long to get back to you. I've been decorating for the Christmas Holiday and haven't been online much the past week. I have lots of Poff information, but unfortunately I don't have Hugh and Ollie or any of the children in my data base. I will look around some and see if I can find anything out for you. Maybe I will get lucky and find something for you. I haven't found much for me lately so anything I find would be a miracle. I'll let you know what I find if anything. Another said E. Sulpher Springs, TX. You probably have that information already. I will definately keep on eye open for he and his wife. Nicolle

    3. Nicolle, Thanks for keeping me in mind. William Wesley Poff married Sarah Elizabeth Simms in Arkansas on September 18, 1845. They moved to Hopkins County Texas around 1848 or so. I've got all his descendants pretty well tracked down, but haven't been able to find his father and mother, though I understand she may have been named Mary. She married Miles Gibson July 28, 1847 in Howard County, IN and died after 1880 and before 1900. Does anyone know anything of what happened to her? It is said that both her and her husband Miles are buried in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Howard County, but there seems to be no records of them there. Howard County also has no record of her death. Please if anyone could help me I would greatly appreciate it. Her gg grandfather was Frederick Paff who came to Philadealphia on August 15, 1750 whose brothers were "possibly" Johann Henry Paff and Georg Gottlieb Paff. Thank You, Nicolle
