    1. Re: [PDP] Public and Private Data
    2. There is a tremendous difference between sharing "personal" genealogy data (such as the names of one's parents, siblings, children, etc.) and exchanging data on long-deceased forebears. The Plantagenets have been deceased for quite a while. Exercise caution, but realize that there are probably thousands of persons who share your remote ancestors with you, and in the case of the Plantagenets, the subject of this listserv, there are *millions* of us. Of this number, there are thousands who can demonstrate their particular descents in published records. Most of the data shared on these remote ancestors is in the public domain, already published. Where we may think we have made an original discovery with medieval lines, you can be nearly certain that someone else has already been there a long time ago and mapped it out. These ancient lines are no big secret. There is absolutely *nothing* wrong with exchanging data on early lineages, as long as the source originator is credited. Publishing living family data is another matter entirely and I would not recommend it: the persons you exchange information with are at best only remote cousins. What possible reason could they have for wanting to know the names of your immediate family? Studies have demonstrated that every person on the planet is at least your 40th cousin (in the case of the Plantagenets, it's much closer than that), so there may not be much to be gained by trying to determine who your 17th cousin two times removed is--fun though it may be to some. Let's share data on our ancient publicly-accessible ancestors, and leave the private facts private. I sent info to a distant cousin and then poof, the info was on the internet (including ALL of of the information about living family although after several stern emails he did remove that). If I had wanted my work on the internet I would have put it on myself. Now I am very leary about who I share my research with. It is a shame that a couple of people have to try to ruin what is a enjoyable pastime.
