    3. I know my great great grandfather Jones but haven't done research on the other Jones. My mom was a member of the DAR and they went away from the Jones line in order to go to the Revolutionary War. The earliest Jones I have is John Clayton, born 1839 Padsworth, MD, died Hall, MD. Glad to help with the link. 3. Marc Yes, some are affiliated with the Plantagenet family, some aren't. In the case of the Lords of Bamburgh, any descendant of John of Gaunt, Richard II, or Henry V, is also a descendant of these early Angle warlords. Also, the later Stewart Kings of Scotland and England have Plantagenet ancestry. Apparently I'm not the only one here with as many or more Scottish (by the way, Scotch is a drink) ancestors than English, though. How do you tell which you have more of? I guess you could count, but that only reflects how many who you can find records for. The rule of thumb for me is how many lined up on each side at the battle of Bannockburn in 1314. In my case I have a couple of dozen ancestors who I know were with the Scots while only a few (again, that I know of) were with the English. But I can trace more English branches back further than I can many of my Scottish families so I probably have a lot more ancestors through my Plantagenet connections. The Red Douglases (the Earls of Angus) and the Black Douglases (The Earls of Douglas) were two principal branches of the same family, both descended from different sons of Sir William 'le Hardi' Douglas, Lord of Douglas. The senior branch, the Black Douglases, were so named for being descended from Sir James 'the Black' Douglas, Lord of Douglas, who was the constant companion of Robert the Bruce (called Sir James 'the Good' by Scottish historians). Jim Marc Sanders wrote: Jim Are any of these families connected to the Plantagenet family? They seem more Scottish than English, although I don't know how you tell if you're more Scotch than English. And I'll bite what is the difference between the Red Douglases and the Black Douglases? Marc.

    3. For those who may not know - An invaluable little book with a very long title that nearly fell off the shelf on me late one night when the library was about to close. It quite unexpectedly brought me face to face with my Plantagenet descent through the Mowbrays and the Greys and Blounts and Beauchamps, among others, to the Sutton Dudley Barons: "The Plantagenet Ancestry of Seventeenth-Century Colonists: The Descent from the Later Plantagenet Kings of England, Henry III, Edward I, Edward II, and Edward III, of Emigrants from England and Wales to the North American Colonies Before 1701," by (the late) David Faris. Barbara Dudley Washburn (Also descended from Isaac Allerton, and his wife Mary and daughter Mary; Francis Cooke; John Howland; John Tilley and his wife Joan and daughter Elizabeth; Richard Warren; William White and his wife Susanna and son Resolved ALL passengers on the Mayflower that landed on Cape Cod in 1620 - but none of whom are Plantagenet descendants to our knowledge.) Might as well take full advantage of this wonderful resource we have. The archives is fully searchable; you never know who might come along looking for your particular lineage. Kevin

    3. I have dozens of ancestors from the colonies. I am a member of NSDAR, Colonial Dames, and The National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century. You can find a LOT of my colonial ancestors (many with stories and history) at my website: http://genealogy2.com/ they are found on many pages but I'd suggest you begin by scrolling down and clicking on "Pilgrims" page.
