There is also an Austin Pettis in 1850 whose father Joel was listed as a carpenter, just like Austin too, but that leads me in a whole different direction. Anyhow thanks for the help. That 1850 census has the Pitts listed as Gad (62 yrs old) and Margaret Pitts (67 yrs old). The numbers dont add up probably because Austin whether he was 15 or 21 would have been born with a mother at 52 yrs old or 46 yrs old--highly unlikely.
