Author: BrandyBunson63 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.pitts/2049.2.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: This is what I have in my notes on Lunsford Pitts and Elizabeth Crutcher: Elizabeth Crutcher is the daughter of Thomas Crutcher (1706-1786) and Sarah Foster (1712-1801).Lunsford Pitts and his wife Elizabeth Crutcher are listed in the DAR Patriot Index-Centenniel Edition on page 2323, Part 3. I'm not certain that this is where I found their birth dates. Some years ago my daughter was in contact with Jack Pitts of Caroline County, VA. He had lots of Pitts research and gave us the information on David Pitts, so perhaps he also gave us the date on his son Lunsford. I will check and see if she is still in contact via E-mail and will let you know. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: BrandyBunson63 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.pitts/2049.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have a Lunsford Pitts born 1729 in St. Anne Parish, Essex Co., VA. He died 26 Jun 1813 in Sumner Co., TN. He is the son of David Pitts (1702-1783)born and died in Essex Co., VA. His wife was Elizabeth Crutcher born 1746 in Essex Co.,VA. i have one daughter listed for them: Lucy Pitts born 28 Mar 1775 in Powatan, VA. She died 28 Dec 1853 in Franklin Co., GA. His wife is Jane Cruikshank born 1705 in VA. She must have died before 1780 because she is not mentioned in her husband's will of that date. His name has been found in deed records as early as 1723. In that record, his land was listed as adjoining the property being sold. It appears David was a fairly wealthy man as he was in possession of large land holdings and numerous slaves when he died in 1783. I found David Pitt Sr. who died in 1783 listed in the DAR Patriot Index, Vol. II, page #166. Brandy Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: pittsjerry Surnames: Pitts Womack Wright Dickins Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.pitts/2132/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am trying to figure out our family tree and get hung up in Ovett, MS. My great grandfather (Jeff Pitts - June 1884 - Sept. 1926) married Mary J. Womack and moved to Wesson (Copiah County). We are told that Jeff's mother was also named Mary Pitts and died Mary Wright (may have been married to Emmanuel Wright). My sister visited her grave in Ovett while she was there. My sister spoke to Mary's daughter some years back who told her that her mother (Mary Pitts-Wright)had been married seven times and had 12 children and that she had given all of her children the last name Pitts. We were told that the father of Jeff Pitts was believed to be Charlie Dickins. From this we concluded that Mary's maiden name must have been Pitts but we are not sure. We did find a Mary Pitts who was the daughter of Daniel and Margaret Pitts from Ovett but the ages did not seem to be correct for this to be the right person. If anyone has any insight into this great mystery we would really appreciate th! e help. Author: pittsjerry Surnames: Pitts Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.pitts/467.717.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am thinking we may be from a different set of Pitts but would love to be able to trace back further if you have any other information. I have only been able to trace our family tree back to my great grandfather, "Jeff Pitts". My father said he thinks he moved to Copiah County from Alabama. He was shot and killed by the Copiah County Sheriff after being caught moonshining. My Grandfather's name was Clyde Pitts Sr. He was killed in a head on collision with an 18-wheeler in Byram back around 1977. He married my grandmother Mary Davis from Hazlehurst. Her father was Willie Davis. Most of the Davis family is buried at Bethel Baptist Church here in Hazlehurst where I live. My grandfather had two sons Clyde Pitts Jr. who is 70 or 71 now and my father Jerry Pitts Sr. who is 66. They are life long country music musicians. My uncle Clyde is in the Mississippi Country Music Hall of Fame. My uncle lives in Brandon, MS and my dad in Jackson, MS. I am happy to report that neither ended ! up with a drinking problem. I guess that died with my grandfather. I was hoping to discover something good from the past. The only ties I have been told was what I listed above and that we were kin to Charlie Pitts who was part of the Jessie James gang. My father tells a story of Jessie James at my great-great grandmothers house but I have no family line to verify that, just stories told and passed through the generations. So as you can see not a lot of good family background to brag about. Oh, and on my mothers side we are supposedly kin to Mary Surratt (first woman hung). My mothers maiden name is Sarrett. I was told the spelling was changed due to the family embarrassment. But at least I know on my mothers side I am part French but have no idea on my fathers side. If you have any further details that could help me trace my fathers side please let me know. By the way I know there are at least two sets of Pitts who live in Crystal Springs. Billy Pitts and Elden Ray Pitts. I am the only one that I know of here in Hazlehurst but I am not originally from here. I was born and raised in Jackson. I married a woman (Janice Rutledge)from Hazlehurst in 1989 and built a home here in 1990. I did not know that my family was from here until my great grandfather (Willie Davis) passed away in 1992 and we buried him at Bethel Baptist Church in Hazlehurst where he was a life-long member. He was 97 when he died and had lived with my grandmother in Jackson for many years before his death so I never made the connection. He had actually lived in Suntag all the years I was growing up so I never knew about the Hazlehurst connection. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: MattHigdon Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.pitts/467.717.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Yes, the Higdon families and Pitts families are among the earliest Copiah County families and actually migrated west together from Virginia to the Carolinas to Alabama and Laurens County Georgia; before our ancestors ended up in Mississippi. The Higdons and Pitts have intermarried several times through the years. I was in Laurens County Ga. this spring and there is still a large family of Pitts there. I believe all Pitts families that have been in Mississippi since before the Civil War are most likely descended from Aaron Pitts in one way or another. My own g-g-grandmother Permelia Pitts was a daughter of Wesley Pitts, one of the sons of Aaron Pitts. She married Bud Higdon. They were the g-grandparents of Frank and Dean Higdon. Dean is Jeffs father. Most of the older Copiah County families are related to the Pitts in some way.(Wheeler, Lowe, Purser,Sumrall, Rea, Herrington etc.) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
