This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: J_Popick Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.pitts/661.677.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: As far as I know, John Pitts and Elizabeth Gardner were the parents of: Andrew Pitts, born 1726 and died between 1770 and 1781 in Rowan County, NC, married Martha Stroud, and John Pitts, Jr. born c. 1730 and married Ann. I have not conclusively verified this information however. There are several other researchers, who have performed extensive research on the Pitts line who claim the above to be true. The Stroud family has been thoroughly researched and much documentation is available on her line on the internet. The Stroud line is truly fascinating. Regarding John Pitts: Many researchers claim that he is a son of Henry Pitt and Mary Galloway. Children from this marriage are claimed to be Joseph, b. 1670, Mary, b. 1672, Charles b. 1677 and John b. abt. 1700. I have not been able to verify that any of these children actually belonged to Henry and Mary. Also of note, there are way to many years between Charles and John for John to be a brother. Also, and most conclusively, a DNA project has been performed on proven descendents of Joseph and Charles and John. The results are conclusive that Joseph and Charles were brothers and that John clearly was not a sibling or even a cousin to Joseph and Charles. This study stops at Joseph and Charles. There has been no information that I have been able to locate that indicates that they truly were children of Henry and Mary. For that matter, the same can be said for John. It seems unlikely that John could have been a child of Henry and Mary. If it is assumed that Mary was ! born c. 1750, based upon the year of Joseph's birth, then she would have given birth to John when she was near 50 years old. This is not out of the question, but seems unlikely. Other researchers have indicated that John immigrated around 1721. This is based upon "tradition". Peter Colham's volumes of "Emigrants" does not show a John Pitt/Pitts arriving in Virginia any time near 1721. The Pitt/Pitts family was firmly established in the Isle of Wight area by the 1640's with many descendants. It seems like John could belong to several of the Pitt lines, but because of the DNA study, it appears that John Pitts is certainly not of the same line of Joseph and Charles. IF it has been proven that Joseph and Charles are of the Isle of Wight Pitt line then John comes from a totally different Pitt line and vice versa. If anyone has any definitive information as to where John Pitts, b. c. 1700 came from, please share. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
