I find him in the 1800 census with a Sister Louise Pitts-Worden as a ward. Can't find anything on-line like court doc. Is there anyone researching James S/L Pitts and Martha J. Unknown family? Some of these Family members turn up in Texas where I find my ggrandpa in Limestone County in the 1900 census. This county is next to Burleson where James' Father and Mother moved. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Mattie TENNEY and Sam SUTTON which was taken at the H. P. Kirk Studio in Mason City, Iowa. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with the couple likely in their 20's at the time the photograph was taken. In addition to their names, someone has written "wedding picture of" and "Avon's Mother & Father" on the back of the photograph. Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding this couple: Samuel Bert SUTTON was b. 1866 in New Jersey. Samuel's son, Avon William SUTTON was b. 10 Mar 1893 in Mason City, IA, married Bertha Bel PITTS (b. 14 Dec 1896 in IA) in 1913 and together they had three children including Avon LeRoy "Bud" SUTTON born in OR in 1919. Avon William SUTTON died 28 Jan 1963 in Hood River, OR. Census records provide the following information: 1870 census of Falls Township, IA: Chas W. TENNEY, age 36, a Farmer, born ME Mary A. TENNEY, age 34, Keeping House, born Canada Thomas TENNEY, age 12, Attending School, born IA Edward TENNEY, age 10, Attending School, born IA Charles J. TENNEY, age 5, Attending School, born IA Nina TENNEY, age 3, at Home, born IA Martha P. TENNEY, age 2, born IA + 1 Servant 1900 census of Mason, IA: Samuel B. SUTTON, age 34, born Jan 1866, married 4 years, born NJ, parents born NJ, a Stationary Engineer Genevieve I. SUTTON, wife, age 31, born Feb 1869, married 4 years 1 child/1 living, born MN, parents born NY Herbert R. SUTTON, son, age 2, born Jan 1898, born IA Avon W. SUTTON, son, age 7, born Mar 1893, born IA, parents born NJ/IA I am hoping to locate someone from this family so that the photograph can be returned to its rightful place with the family. In neighboring households are very likely brothers to Thomas, including 23-year-old Oliver C. Pitts and 27-year-old Ed Pitts. (Other records suggest that Oliver was actually 33 in 1880.) A number of family trees have the family as Thomas Adolphus Pitts and his wife Sylvia Caroline "Sadie" Clawson. They list the daughter's name as Mattie Ethlyn Pitts. I have not heard about any American Indian with the exact line you speak of but I can tell you from experience. I had some very dark folks on my grandma's side and I always suspected it was Indian because that is what I heard. When I went hunting it down; I figured out it was Black Dutch ancestry which look like American Indians but they are not. Just keep this in mind in your search. You have to examine the census records to see if theywrote "Indian" in that section. They would even write 1/4 or 1/2 if that applies and the tribe. That is a good indicator. I would like to get caught up on your Pitts ancestry line and was hoping you could send me your email address. mine is mgp 383 @ gmail .com (put it all together). My husbands grandmother was Mary Louina Pitts, youngest daughter of Richard and Sarah Elizabeth Andrews Pitts. My husband is now deceased but he claimed that His grandmother looked like a full blood Indian. His mother did not look like an Indian but her sister did. I saw one brother and he was fair. I have been told that Richard Davis, the othe brother looked Indian. I have a picture of Cordelia Pitts and she looks like she could be mixed. A long time ago, I saw another picture of a Pitts male relative but I don't know the relationship but he looked like a full blood Indian. My husband had a light olive skin color, his sister very fair and other sister was fair but not as light. All had dark hair and blue eyes. I hope you get this message.
