DNA will match the N.C. Pitts group with the Missouri Pitts groups in Hickory and Carroll Counties if any are in DNA projects. Yes, both are related to the Mimms and was proven in the Pitts Vol. 1 and continued in Vol 2 books. In saying that - so was Frank & Jesse James related to the Mimms through Genealogy done at the James Farm in Clay Co., MO. Since I helped write the 3rd volume of the Missouri Pitts, I can tell you Charlie Pitts comes from the group that is in Hickory Co., MO. You WILL NOT find him in any of the 3 volumes of history though because the older generation was ashamed of him and his dealings. As for the James Gang - YOU ALL NEED TO GET A BIGGER SCOPE OF WHO PEOPLE KNEW BACK THEN ((BECAUSE FRANK AND JESSE LOOKED UP THEIR FAMILY RELATIVES WHERE EVER THEY WENT INCLUDING THE PITTS LINES IN BOTH MISSOURI COUNTIES))! These are the facts that I know to be true. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [PITTS] Thurlow R. Pitts and his ancestors
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: drewsmithtpa Surnames: Pitts Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.pitts/383.430.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: According to the 1930 census, Thurlow R. Pitts was the son of Elmer O. and Minnie Pitts, with siblings Oliver, twins John and Joe, and Vera Mae. In 1920, the family was living on Plateau Creek in Mesa County, Colorado. Elmer's World War I Draft Registration Card gives his full name as Oliver Elmer Pitts and his birth date as 13 Sept. 1883. The 1900 census for Mesa County gives the household of Oliver Pitts (born Jan. 1857 in Iowa), wife Jane (born in Indiana), and children Benjamin (21 and born in Colorado), Bertha, Elmer (born Sept. 1883), Reuben, Mabel, and Kate. The 1880 census for Chaffee County gives the household of 23-year-old Oliver Pitts (born in Iowa), wife Jane (born in Indiana), and son Bertie (born in Colorado). Oliver's parents were born in North Carolina. Next door is another Pitts household headed by 25-year-old Thomas (also born in Iowa of North Carolina parents), so it is very likely that Thomas and Oliver were brothers. The 1860 census for Harrison, Benton County, Iowa has the household of C.J. Pitts (born in NC), Susan J. (likely his wife, and she is born in Tenn.), and children Elizabeth, Emmery F., Thomas A. (age 5), Oliver McGuire (age 3), and Wilber McGuire. Oliver and Wilber are at the top of the next page, so the census taker may have miscopied the surname from the previous household on the previous page (the McGuires were in the household prior to the Pitts household). At this point, it gets speculative. In the 1850 census, there is a Cadwaller Pitts in Iowa (born in NC) with wife Susan J. (born in Tenn.) with children Mary and John F. The ages for Cadwaller and Susan J. match those of the couple in the 1860 census. It's possible that those two children did not live to be in the next census. There are public member trees on Ancestry which give Cadwallader Jones Pitts of North Carolina as married to Susan Jane Bryson, with a large number of children, including Oliver Cromwell Pitts. There is also information taking Cadwallader Pitts back several generations to England. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: MariePittsVanEs Surnames: Pitts Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.pitts/383.430.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello my name is Marie Pitts Van-Es. Daughter of Wayne T Pitts and Mary (McGowan) Pitts. Resided in Washington state. His father was Thurlow R Pitts of Co. He came from a large family that included identicle twin brothers. I wish i could remember their names. I stumbled on your posting when i was helping my son do a school project. I know what i am going to write is just probably more Charlie Pitts rumor but i thought i would go ahead anyway and tell you what i know. When i was about 13 my father took my mother and i on a summer trip to colorado to see his families old homestead. I meet many of the Pitts family that lived there. Unfortunetly they have all passed away now. I can still remember when my father and a few of his great aunts start talking about a one of the ancestors a Charlie Pitts rode with thefamous Jessie James gang. The part i remember the most was they said that he had been shot by a sheriff in the ear. The bullet taking a large amount of his ear with it. Theythenwent to saythat the sherif took the ear and basically pickledit ina jar and passes said jar down through his family. I guess as some sort of bragging right of shooting a member of the Jessie James gang. Not sure of this being true but i remember my great great aunt swearing by it. On another note not related to Charlie Pitts but may be of interest to other Pitts ancestors out there. I was told we are relate to the famous Zasu Pitts. Who started as a silent film actress. Her father was Rulandus Pitts. My father told me he had met Zasu one time. Shie died 7 yrs before i was born. If any of you on here know of a Thurlow R Pitts who married Lillian Sneller/hughes of Palisades Colorado . She grew up on a peach farm there. They are my grandparents. My father was Wayne T Pitts. I lost him January 14, 2011. I would love to hear from you. Warm wishes to all you Pitts ancestors, Marie K ( Pitts) Van-Es [email protected] Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: jjhist1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.pitts/383.390.394/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The information below is from research I did on James Gang members back in 2004. I work for the Clay County Missouri Historic Sites, which include the Jesse James Bank Museum and the Jesse James Farm & Museum. I Hope this helps. SAM WELLS Aka CHARLIE PITTS Born: 1844, Indian Territory. At a very early age, his family moved to the NE corner of the Indian Territory so his father could work in the newly opened lead mines. (Near what is now Commerce, Ottawa County, Oklahoma. Commerce is approximately 30 miles SW of Joplin, Missouri.) They moved to Jackson County, Missouri, between 1850-1860. Parents: Geo. Washington Wells and Margaret Shepherd Wells. They owned a large tract of land. Today, Unity Village sits on a portion of the original property. The Wells land was bordered on one side by land owned by Henry Washington Younger, father of Cole, Bob, & Jim. Washington Wells was a soldier for the C.S.A. He was killed October 1864 near the Battle of Westport (Now a golf course near 350 hwy & Westridge Rd. A small skirmish took place there). At age 15, Sam was "fostered out" to a nearby dairy farm for a term of 12 months. Meaning he served as an apprentice. Siblings: We know he had at least one sister, Valeria Wells. She married Charles Turner. One source (Homer Croy) says Sam was one of 12 children. Physical Description: Tall, 5'9"- 6', well-proportioned, big and surly with thick dark hair, dark complexion, usually wore a mustache and goatee, intelligent, quick-witted, sarcastic, hot-tempered, cruel, loud and profane mouth. (Indian blood, Cherokee.) Girlfriend: Lillian Beamer, he jilted her to marry someone else, so she told the sheriff the truth as to how he made a living. Wife: Here we have two different names. Whether they are the same woman (using an alias), two different women, or one just a wannabe, you'll have to work on that. We have Emma Henderson; married at Columbus, Kansas, 1874. (Reference currently misplaced). We also have a Jennie Fisher, who gave an interview with the Indian-Pioneer Press in Sept 1937. She stated that Sam left her in Choteau, in Indian Territory and went, or so she thought, to the "Kansas wheat fields," returning with a wagonload of flour. "While gone he met up with his friend Cole (Younger)." The couple and their children (names not known) quickly moved on to rent a farm near Chetopa, Ks., where Sam left Jennie again, this time, not to return. "He went to Minnesota with Cole and was killed there." Unfortunately, Jennie gave no dates in her interview. Association: In July 1862, while returning home, Mrs. Washington Wells and her son Samuel, age 17, found the body of Henry W. Younger. As she was well acquainted with the Younger family, she stood guard over the body as her son went for help. Cole was grateful to Sam and they became close friends after that. Years later, Cole would bring Sam, now using the name Charlie Pitts, into the gang for the train robbery at Adair, Iowa. It has been speculated that Sam got into some sort of trouble with the law near the end of the War, and changed his name to Pitts. Robberies: Train - Adair, Iowa, July 7, 1873. Bank - Baxter Springs, Kansas, April 19, 1876. Train - near Otterville, Missouri (Rocky Cut), July 7, 1876. Bank - Northfield, Minnesota, September 7, 1876. Death: Hanska Slough, near Blue Earth River, between Maddes and Madelia, Minnesota, September 21, 1876. Five bullets in the shootout had struck him. Souvenir hunters had sliced off his ear and the skin around a wound near the heart. Sam's mother tried to claim the body, but she was thwarted by Minnesota politicians every time. She enlisted the help of Missouri Governor, but he too was unsuccessful. Northfield authorities said the body was never claimed. His remains were sold to Dr.'s Murphy and Hoyt for the skeleton, to be used as a teaching tool. The body was placed in a simple box submerged just off shore in Lake Como to aid flesh decay and whiten the bones. It remained there several months. During the winter, ice cutters were working at the lake and discovered the remains. It was immediately thought they were the remains of a murder victim, But Dr. Murphy was quick to produce papers of ownership, along with viable explanations, settling all rumors and fears immediately. ! Several years later, the skeleton disappeared (was lost track of). A museum in Savage, Minnesota has a skeleton that they claim (with no proof) to be the remains of Charlie Pitts/Sam Wells. (Follow link http://www.mnsu.edu/news/read/?id=old-1235150709&paper=topstories for updated info on this subject.) NOTE: Bill Riley, of the Liberty, Missouri, Fire Department, is related to Sam Wells. He has lots of info and some genealogy, as well. Wells' mother was related to George and Ol Shepherd, also gang members. Another of Sam's sisters (name unknown) married a man named Hagen. The Hagen house still stands; it is in the Lee's Summit area. Riley also said the old slave cabin at Noland Rd. and Truman Rd. belonged to the (Ol & George) Shepherd family.
