There is also an Austin Pettis in 1850 whose father Joel was listed as a carpenter, just like Austin too, but that leads me in a whole different direction. Anyhow thanks for the help. That 1850 census has the Pitts listed as Gad (62 yrs old) and Margaret Pitts (67 yrs old). The numbers dont add up probably because Austin whether he was 15 or 21 would have been born with a mother at 52 yrs old or 46 yrs old--highly unlikely. That Austin Pitts was also born in New York. Although the 1850 Austin Pitts is listed as 21 in that census, it's certainly possible that he was several years younger (and whoever provided the information either didn't know his age or lied about it). If that's the right Austin Pitts, then the Pitts couple living in the household next door (they were also born in New York) could be his parents.
