Hoge April 13, 1907 - December 19, 2005 Memorial graveside services with Military honors for Walter E. Hoge, 98, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005, at the Valley View Cemetery with the Military Chaplain, Dennis Mueller officiating. Mr. Hoge died on Dec. 19, 2005, at the Goshen Care Center in Torrington. Cremation has taken place. Those who wish may direct memorial contributions in his memory to the Goshen Care Center. He was born on April 13, 1907, near Chugwater, the son of August and Ida (Snook) Hoge. He moved with his family to Lost Springs where he attended country school. He later attended school at Sunrise. He then worked on a ranch near Lost Springs before entering the US Army in 1942. He served until 1946 and participated in the D-Day Invasion. Following his discharge, Walter returned to Lost Springs and went to work on the Otto Bible Ranch. He married Bertha Wampler on June 13, 1955, in Rapid City, S.D., and the couple moved to Keeline until 1962 when they moved to Torrington. Walter worked at an implement dealer in Henry, Neb., for a time and later worked for Barnes Equipment at Torrington. He retired in 1972. Walter enjoyed gardening and was a member of the Revised Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was also a member of the American Legion Travis Snow Post #5 and the Paul A. Johnston Post 2918 of the VFW. He is survived by two step-daughters Mary Ellen Gorsuch and her husband Paul of Torrington; and Hazel Bunge of Harrison, Neb.; a step-son Ernst Wampler and his wife Flicka of Jackson; two nieces, Ida May Hoisington of Oroville, Calif., and Loraine Piggott of North Glenn, Colo.; 14 step grandchildren, 18 step great-grandchildren, and 10 step great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Bertha, a step-daughter, Dorothy May Lang; a step-son Harry Leroy Wampler, and one sister Frances Hahn. Gardner, 89, of Cheyenne, died July 27 at Life Care Center of Cheyenne. Mrs. Gardner was born Nov. 23, 1916, in Potter, Neb. She married William R. Gardner on April 7, 1934, in Kimball, Neb. Mrs. Gardner was affiliated with the First Presbyterian Church and was a member of Eagles Auxiliary, Moose Lodge, Mizpah Chapter No. 36, and Order of Eastern Star. She is survived by a daughter, Margaret Mueller of Cheyenne; a sister, Willamine Miller of Fulsom, Calif.; two brothers, Fred Cavalli and Roy Cavalli, both of Cheyenne; five grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. Mrs. Gardner was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Donald Gardner; a sister, Clara; and one grandchild. The funeral will be 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Schrader Chapel with the Rev. Bob Garrard officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery. Arrangements by Schrader Funeral Home. Gene Hixenbaugh 1918-2006 Gene Hixenbaugh, 88 of Cheyenne died June 16 in Reno, Nev. He was born March 6, 1918 in Glenrock. Gene went in to the Army in 1943 served 3 years and when he was discharged went to Reno Nevada. He met and married his wife Donna in 1956. Gene lived in Reno until 2001 Where he came back to Cheyenne and he opened Gene's furniture and upholstering shop until he retired. He is preceded in death: his wife Donna, his parents William and Clara Hixenbaugh, his sister Norma Smeenk and her husband Will Smeenk; and a son Norman Smeenk. Family survivors: sons Steven and Mike Hixenbaugh , his sister Alice Hixenbaugh of Cheyenne, nephews Robert , Harry, Ken, and Jeff Smeenk of California, one niece Meredith Niemann from Florida. Cremation has taken place , and Interment will be in Las Vegas , Nevada . This is a paid obituary Harry Eugene Miller 1930-2006 Harry Eugene Miller, 76, died July 26 at the Hospice Center in Payson, Ariz. He had been ill for several months with lung cancer. Harry was born March 25, 1930, in Gary, Ind., Harry Franklin and Dolores (Moss) Miller. The family returned to the family farm in the Golden Prairie community near Albin in 1932. Harry attended grade school at the Golden Prairie School. Upon graduating from Albin High School he attended John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Ark., and went on to Northwest Nazarene College in Nampa, Idaho. He relocated to Los Angeles where he received his degree in engineering. Harry worked for several aircraft companies before retiring from the L.A. Municipal Water Department in 1995. He is survived by his wife, Janet (Smith) of Payson, who he married in 1957; a daughter, Dawn and her husband Swinton Scott of Englewood, Calif.; a brother, Joseph and his wife Arnett of Cheyenne; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Sombrio 1947-2006 Hazel Conner Sombrio, a beautiful Christian woman, was taken to heaven at 8 a.m. July 22 in Gilbert, Ariz. She was born Feb. 3, 1947, in Cheyenne. Hazel grew up in Cheyenne and graduated from Cheyenne's Central High as Hazel Endsley in 1965. She is survived by her husband, Jack Sombrio of Gilbert; mother, Doris Conner; sisters, Jackie Terrill and Katie Barbour; brothers, John and Bill Conner; daughter, Patricia Wade, of Starke, Fla.; stepdaughters, Julie Sombrio of Chandler, Ariz., and Colleen Brown of Monroe Falls, Ohio; stepsons, Jack Sombrio of Chandler and Murray Sombrio of Arlington, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and two loving cats. Hazel was known for her love and devotion to others. Her wisdom helped many of us through trying times and despair. She helped us understand God's love and grace. She served for many years in upper management for Valley Bank of Nevada. She gained respect from the customer service representatives that she trained. Later she became vice president and partner of Building Products Corporation of Nevada and Construction Services Group, Inc., helping her husband in every aspect of the business. Her most important attribute was being a loving wife, mother and friend to all who knew her. Her aim in life was to show Christ in her life that others might come to know Him. Atwood 1940-2006 John W. Atwood, 66, of Cheyenne died Sunday July 23 in Cheyenne. He was born April 29, 1940, in Anita, Iowa, and moved to Wyoming in 1952. Mr. Atwood graduated from Burns High School, joined the U.S. Marines in 1962 and was a veteran of Vietnam. He worked as a glazier for 30 years in Cheyenne and managed Windwood Manor for 13 years. Mr. Atwood is survived by his wife, Helen Atwood; six children, Russell Fales, Eldan Fales, Carl Atwood, Drenna Kuebel, John L. Atwood and Julia Atwood; 11 grandchildren; and two brothers and a sister, Bill Atwood, Dean Atwood and Linda Doty; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister. Cremation is be under the direction of Wiederspahn Crematory. Kevin Aaron Shattuck 1982-2006 Kevin Aaron Shattuck, 23, of Cheyenne died July 25 in Cheyenne. He was born Dec. 8, 1982, in Cheyenne and had lived here his whole life. Kevin graduated from Cheyenne's Central High in 2001. In his youth, he participated in Boy Scouts and karate. One of Kevin's passions was music. He liked to write, produce and record music. He also liked to go camping, shoot guns and ride motorcycles. Kevin started working for Subway while in high school. After he graduated he worked at Dillard's in the maintenance department. The last few years he has been working at Lowe's Home Improvement, managing the lumber department. Kevin is survived by his parents, Robert and Karen Shattuck; sisters, Mandie and Jessica Shattuck; grandparents, E.L. and Marge Chapman of Cheyenne, Betty Jacobs of Cheyenne, Robert and Patricia Shattuck of Middletown, N.Y., and John and Irma Baker of Chugwater; aunts, Terri Frazier of Cheyenne, Erin Shattuck and family of Mongtomery, N.Y.; uncles, Russell Chapman and David Chapman and his family of Cheyenne; cousins Nathanial R. Brown 1946-2006 Larry Eugene Brown, 60, of Cheyenne died July 22 at United Medical Center-West. Mr. Brown was born July 10, 1946, in Chehalis, Wash., and had lived here since 1992. He served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam and achieved the rank of sergeant. Mr. Brown attended Holy Trinity Catholic Church and enjoyed going to Big Country Speedway for the races. He is survived by his wife, Mary Margarat Brown of Cheyenne, whom he married Feb. 1, 1960, in Massachusetts; a son, Michael Brown of Cheyenne; two daughters, Patricia Lucas of Cheyenne and Kathleen Gregory of Hollis, N.H.; a brother, Dennis Brown of Seattle; six grandchildren; and a cousin. Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene L. and Eileen Brown. Cremation has taken place at Cheyenne Memorial Gardens under the direction of Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes. Larry E. Sloan 1930-2006 Larry Elwin Sloan, 75, of Cheyenne died July 23 from a long-term illness, surrounded by family. He was born Oct. 17, 1930, in Springview, Neb. Larry grew up on a Nebraska Sandhills ranch and graduated from Springview High School in 1949. A Cheyenne resident for more than 40 years, Larry worked as a Wyoming Highway Department engineer, built the Circle Park mobile-home park and, most recently, built and owned Extra Closet Storage. A staunch entrepreneur, he had also bought and sold real estate, built and sold several new homes, partnered in a custom hay-grinding business and invested in the stock market. For more than 30 years, Larry, a licensed private pilot, owned, flew, designed, constructed, traded and tinkered on airplanes as a member of Cheyenne's Chapter 342 Experimental Aircraft Association. An Aeronautical engineer, he helped many EAA members with design and construction problems as well as serving as treasurer. An avid pilot, he donated countless weekends to the Young Eagles Program and introduced many young people to aviation by escorting them on flights in his airplane. A U.S. Air Force veteran, he was stationed in New York from 1951 to 1955, where he met his wife, Margaret McClure Sloan (Peggy). They married in 1955. Larry graduated from Embry Riddle Aviation School in Miami in 1958 with an Aeronautical engineering degree. While living in Florida, Larry hand-built an ocean-worthy boar which he used to make a part-time business of retrieving stuck anchors. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Sloan of Cheyenne; daughters, Diane Sloan and her husband David Morgan of Cheyenne, Susan Sloan of Lander and Sheri Sloan and her husband Marc Crandal of Douglas; grandchildren, Shaun Peterson of Cheyenne, Mindy Grice of Okinawa, Japan, Tyler Morgan and Kyle Morgan of North Grand Junction, Colo.; a great-granddaughter, Marrissa Grice of Okinawa; a great-grandson, Kobe Morgan; and a brother, Keith Sloan and his wife Marleen of South Dakota. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Alma (Carr) Sloan of Springview. Larry's calm, analytical manner earned respect from all who knew him - his compassionate nature earned their love. A memorial fund for the EAA will be set up in Larry's honor. The Cessna 172 pointed into the wind at Sloan's Airport outside Cheyenne, Wyoming. The plane trembled as the engine revved. As the propeller reached optimum speed. Lawrence Elwin Sloan (Larry), 75, of Cheyenne, released the brakes. The single engine plane lurched then raced down the grass runway and ascended into the sky. This is a paid obituary. Maye Minich 1926-2006 Maye Minich, 79, of Cheyenne died July 25 in Cheyenne. She was born Aug. 21, 1926, in Fort Smith, Ark., to Joseph and Virginia McBride. Mrs. Minich was affiliated with the First United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Rawlins and was a volunteer at Youth Alternatives. She is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Campbell and her husband Tom of Cheyenne; a son, Mike Minich and his wife Laura of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; two brothers, Marvin McBride and his wife Elanor of Imnaha, Ore., and Ray McBride and his wife Kim of Sacramento, Calif.; four grandchildren, Jennifer Piggott and her husband Jim of Longmont, Colo., Josh Dorrell and his wife Amanda of Laramie, Daniel Dorrell and his wife Tanya of Riverton, and Heather Briscoe and her husband Arron of Laramie; and 10 great grandchildren. The funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Friday today at Schrader Chapel with the Rev. Nadine Korhonen officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery.
