    1. [PIGGOTT] Another Treasure Trove, Pigotts of Ely Cambridgeshire

    3. Hi List, Please try to help Jen out. Remember that she is "new", as we ALL once were. I'm sure that if anyone has a disagreement, she will be grateful for your comments and analysis. She has gathered a tremendous amount of information, and asks for help and comments in several areas. I know in the past we have had members working this line. Jen has freely contributed her work, so I will be disappointed if no one will comment. Joe Hi Joe, I've only started researching my relatives in the last year, so I am new to all of this. I've recently been researching the Pigotts of Cambridgeshire (I'm descended from William Pigott and Elizabeth Atkin), so I thought that I'd share some of my research, although there are a few discrepencies with other information I've come across. I've used the spelling "Pigott" throughout, although the records give many different versions. Please excuse the setting out - it's pretty rough! Pigotts of Ely, Cambridgeshire: John Pigott b. abt. 1600 Ely m. Martha Fison (or Fyson) 1624 Ely Trinity. Martha d. 1632? Children: 1. John Pigott b. 1625 d. 1676 2. Richard Pigott b. 1626 d. 1676? Brickmaker? m. Margaret (she died a widow in 1678). 3. William Pigott b. 1628 4. Robert Pigott b. 1630 d.1630 5. Margaret Pigott? b.1632 Children of Richard Pigott & Margaret: 1. Bridget b. 1653 m. John Steward 1678 2. Margaret b. 1654 d. 1654 3. Richard. b. 1655 4. Margaret b. 1657 5. Richd. b. 1659 d. 1661 6. Richd. b. 1664 d. 1667 7. Matth. b. 1666 d. 1683 8. John b. 1668 m. Elizabeth 9. John b. 1715 d. 1716 * Unfortunately I can't be absolutely certain that my William Pigott is the son of Henry and Mary Pigott, as there was another William Pigott born in 1714, to parents Richard and Anne Pigott. I can't find burial records for a couple of the Richard Pigotts of Ely (there were about 4 during the early 1700s), so I don't know their occupations. As my William was a butcher, like Henry, I'm fairly confident that Henry was his father. The other William Pigott married Anne Bavister in Ely, the same year as William and Elizabeth Atkin were married. I haven't found any children of William and Anne Pigott. A William Pigott (Woolcomber) died in Ely in 1743. An Anne Pigott (Wid.) died in 1760 Ely, from the workhouse. Children of John & Hannah Pigott: 1. John b. 1725 d. 1726 2. Mary b. 1726 3. Granado b. 1738 d. 1738 2. Richard b. 1735 d. 1747 * Ely St Mary Parish Records 22 May 1761: "The mobb rose in Ely on 20th day of June 1757 and broke open a barn belonging to Mr. Grenader Pigott in Barton and carried out said barn about 90 coom of wheat and 30 coom of barley". Children of William & Elizabeth (Atkin) Pigott: 1. Granado b. 1738 d. 1739 2. Granada b. 1742 d. 1825 (Farmer/Grazier?) 3. Richard b. 1753 d. 1814 (Solicitor) m. Sarah Haylock of Downham 4. Mary b. 1751 5. Margaret b. 1756 m. John William Kitchener 1789 Ely 6. Elizabeth b. 1745 m. Highmore Skeats 1786 Ely 7. William "The Younger" b. 1740 d. 1798 (Butcher) m. Sarah Watson 1767 Ely Children of John & Ann Pigott: 1. Anne b. 1761 2. John b. 1763 3. Mary b. 1766 Children of John & Hannah (Dinnage) Pigott: 1. Charlotte b. 1778 d.1779 Children of Perry & Rebecca (Butty) Pigott: 1. John b. 1767 2. Perry b. 1770 d. 1847 m. Alice 3. Rebecca b. 1772 4. Susan b. 1779 Children of Richard & Sarah (Haylock) Pigott: 1. Granado b. 1785 d. 1840 (Farmer/Grazier?) 2. Henry b. 1784 d. 1855 (Solicitor) m. Mary Carrington of Witchford 3. Mary b. 1791 m. Aaron Chevell 1823 Ely 4. Richard. b. 1794 d. 1800 5. Elizabeth b. 1789 m. John Harlock (Farmer) Children of Margaret Pigott & John William Kitchener: 1. John William Kitchener b. 1797 2. Margaretta Kitchener b. 1790 3. Lucretia Kitchener b. 1792 Children of William "The Younger" & Sarah (Watson) Pigott: 1. Hannah b. 1768 2. William b. 1775 I haven't found a connection (as yet!) between the Ely Pigotts and the Abington Pigotts. The first use of the name Granado in Ely seems to be Granado Pigott b. 1705. My theory is that this Granado was named after Granado Pigott (b. Abington 1650?), who was a Member of Parliament in 1702. His name is recorded under the House of Commons, Cambridgeshire Constituencies for 19 Feb. 1690. He died in 1725. So I think it was a case of appropriating a highly regarded name, just as people have named their children after Kings, Queens & movie stars. I started researching the Haddenham, Cambridgeshire Pigotts as initially I thought that they were the illigitimate children of William & Elizabeth Pigott's son Granado Pigott (born 1742). But then I realized that Henry & Mary Pigott's son Granado (born 1705) could also have been the father. I don't know if anyone can help me out with this? The Pigott-Ellis branch is a confusing but intriguing family to research & I've been easily sidetracked! Pigott - Ellis of Haddenham, Cambridgeshire: * Ely St. Mary Parish Records, Overseers Bastardy Bonds: May 1760 Bastardy bonds of Granado Pigott, gent. to maintain the child of Mary Ellis. * the Ely St. Mary Parish records also record an order to arrest & imprison Mary Ellis, singlewoman for contumacy (resisting authority) 13 Mar 1762. Children of Mary Ellis: 1. Mary Elliss c. 1760 St Mary's Ely "reputed dau of Grennado Piggot" Mother Mary Elliss 2. Henry Pigott Ellis c. 1770 Ely Trinity "base" , father's name blank, mother Mary 3. Granado Pigott Ellis c. 1776 Ely Trinity "base", father's name blank, mother Mary Mary Ellis (spinster) of Ely, Holy Trinity married John Glenton (bac) of Haddenham in 1778. Children: 1. 3. Hi Jen, don't want to make Joe disappointed ;-) Thanks Joe for forwarding Jen's Pigott's. I'm glad Jen was sidetracked on Granado Pigott ;-) Jen, my Piggott's also are of Ely District !! and Granado is my line (Granado - Ellis) which as you mentioned is confusing. I haven't gotten anywhere with that line much since probably would have to get to England to dig in the records to figure out more about my line. (Thanks to the help of Chris Pigott , Joe and others). What I have is Granado Pigott c. 8 Mar 1790 in Haddenham, died Dec 1840 in Haddenham whom married Sarah Henry on 1815 in Haddenham Granado PIGOTT, Schoolmaster in Haddenham, Cambridgeshire, England, married Haddenham, 1815 to Sarah HENRY, and had issue: 1. Granado PIGOTT, baptized Gt Hormead, Herts (possible Sarah's mother's parish), 28 May 1815 2. Mary Ann Pigott, baptized Haddenham, 15 June 1816; married to Richard Burkitt who was born 1807 in Haddenham, both died in Arlington Heights, Cook County, Illinois (my ancestor's) 3. Lorenzo, baptized Ely Isle, 18 January 1818. 4. Susannah, baptized Bourne, Cambs, 23 January 1820; went to New Zealand; married at Wellington, 17 March 1847 to Benjamin Mendez PERIERA, late of Marseilles, Storekeeper in Wellington (text of married registration suggests her father "Granado PIGOTT of Haddenham, Isle of Ely" was still living. 5. Harriet, baptized Bourne, 26 December 1821; buried there 26 June 1822. Source's: Chris Pigott of N. S. W. (Australia) & Parish records of Haddenham. Granado's father: Granado Pigott (Ellis) c. about 1769 of Haddenham (not sure about this data). married Judith Wray on 23 Jan 1787 in Haddenham (Parish records). She born about 1768 and died 20 Jan 1788 in Haddenham. Granado died Jan 1817 in Haddenham. Granado married 2nd to Ann Tuck on 23 Nov 1789 in Harston, Cambridgeshire. She died 18 Nov 1803 in Haddenham. Granado married 3rd to Margaret Ellis bef. 1807. Granado PIGOTT, Tradesman, had issue by wife Ann, who was buried at Haddenham, Cambridgeshire, England, 18 November 1803: 1. Granado PIGOTT, baptized 8 Mar 1790 2. Edward PIGOTT, baptized 26 March 1796. 3. Mary, baptized 7 January 1799. Granado PIGOTT (possibly the same) had (poss further) issue in Haddenham by Margaret ELLIS (perhaps a 2nd/3rd wife): 4. George C. PIGOTT, abt. 1806 5. Charles PIGOTT, baptized 31 August 1807 Cambridgeshire Baptism Index 1801 - 1837, 1807, Pigot, Charles, son of Granado and Margaret, parish: Haddenham, age 0 and 1811 at age 2. (Possible two children named Charles, one dying before the 2nd one to have two baptisms). 6. Henry PIGOTT, abt. 1811 I believe the source for Margaret ELLIS came from the I.G.I. ( So data I found on the IGI would be always suspect). Don't have primary records for her. You have Margaret Crow.. would like to know your sources Jen.. It would help me in future searches to know what records you came across. Hope you might have some other records that might fit in the puzzle. There are a lot of Granado's in the Ablingon PIGOTT's. "The name Granado I believe comes from Sir James Granado, my 11th GG Father, who Burkes quote as 'From Burke's Commoners Vol.I, pp16-19 Pub.1977 .....Katherine, daughter and heiress of Sir James Granado, knt. equerry to HENRY VIII. descended from an ancient family in the duchy of Brabant...'
