    3. Joe, The Regiment from which Frederick Edward PIGGOTT transferred, as you are undoubtedly aware, was almost certainly the Victorian 52nd, or Hobson's Bay, Infantry Regiment. Hobson's Bay is down Geelong way. The 5th Battalion was formed in Melbourne, largely by volunteers from that Regiment. They embarked in Melbourne on H.M.A.T. "Orvieto" on Wed 21 Oct 1914. A diary kept by another soldier on the "Orvieto" can be found at http://mywebpage.netscape.com/ryangenealogy/hottonaj.html It records that the "Orvieto" sailed at 3 p.m., after the massed crowds had broken past a pickett-line of sentries with fixed bayonets, at the end of the wharf, & streamed all over the pier to make their farewells. The "Orvieto" arrived in Albany on Mon 26 Oct, to await the assembly of some 36 Australian Troopships, with yet more from N.Z, into a major convoy. Under naval escort, the convoy set out on Sun 1 Nov 1914, & steamed to Colombo, where it arrived on Sun 15 Nov. Then to Aden, 22 Nov; Suez, 30 Nov (10.30 am, & into the Canal proper at 3.20 pm); & finally arriving at Port Said, at 7.30 am on Tue 1 Dec. >From this humble Australian, a very special & solemn greeting to the PIGOTT-List for this coming Anzac Day. Lest we forget. Chris PIGOTT.
