    3. Joe, You might be interested to learn that all service records for 1st A.I.F. Servicemen can now be viewed online, on the National Archives of Australia web-site at: www.naa.gov.au You are well warned that demand for access is high, & service can be very, very slow. Your grandfather has a 40 page service record, which makes interesting reading. He received a Bullet Wound in the chest at Anzac Cove, & died 26 Apr 1915 on the Temporary Hospital Ship "Clan McGillivray." He was buried from her at sea between Gallipoli & Alexandria, the same day. He was No 6, Staff Sergeant Major, 5th Infantry Battalion A.I.F., Headquarters Signals - Signaller. His Attestation Form was filled in from other sources, suggesting, as his occupation was recorded as Soldier, that he may have transferred to the A.I.F. from some other military position. His "enlistment date" was recorded as 1 Sep 1914. The only movement record is as follows: C.C. Tps NOVIAN. Embarked to join M.E.F. (Gallipoli Campaign), Alexandria, 5 Apr 1915. He was recorded as unmarried. His next of kin was recorded as daughter Miss Ethel M. PIGGOTT, Dampton, Park Drive, Ramsgate, Kent. A typed original pension form, signed at Australia House, London, 14 Apr 1916, with several duplicate additions, recorded other kin: Frederick Edward PIGGOTT, 40 Osbourne Rd, Broadstairs, Kent, son. Martha Ethel PIGGOTT, same address, daughter. Marjorie Mary PIGGOTT, ditto, ditto. All three were recorded as being under the trusteeship of James Henry PIGGOTT, same address. I take it that one of the two girls was your mother. There was a letter addressed to National Mutual & Life Association, Collins St, Melbourne, suggesting he may have had business connections or had resided there. The Australian Army HQ was in Melbourne - perhaps he transferred to the A.I.F. from a Staff postion there? But you probably knew all of this anyway. Regards. Chris PIGOTT.
