    1. [PIGGOTT] Descendants of Richard Pigott (Chris??)
    2. Joe Bissett
    3. Hi List, This genealogy kindly submitted to us by "Beverly". How about it Chris? Can you tie in the Irish side? Joe Generation No. 1 1. RICHARD1 PIGOTT was born 14 Dec 1814 in Ireland, and died 15 Apr 1885 in Tennessee. He married FANNIE HODNIT. She was born 02 Feb 1818 in Ireland, and died 18 Aug 1879 in Tennessee. Child of RICHARD PIGOTT and FANNIE HODNIT is: 2. i. MARY JANE2 PIGOTT, b. 1842, County Cork, Ireland; d. 21 Jun 1923, Shelby County, TN. Generation No. 2 2. MARY JANE2 PIGOTT (RICHARD1) was born 1842 in County Cork, Ireland, and died 21 Jun 1923 in Shelby County, TN. She married JOHN HENRY LIPFORD 1860 in McNairy County, TN, son of AMOS LIPFORD and ELIZABETH FRIZZELL. He was born Abt. 1835 in Pittsylvania County, VA, and died 1893 in McNairy County, TN. Notes for MARY JANE PIGOTT: The first stories of Catholicism in this area date back to about 1830, prior to the Civil War, when the Pigott family from Ireland settled out on Beauty Hill Road near Bethel Station, which later became Bethel Springs. The log home they built that year still stands today, probably the oldest residence in McNairy County. Cemetery markers in Bethel Springs bear the names Richard Pigott 1878-1904, and C. Pigott 1878-1928, the last of the Pigotts in McNairy County since the family left here and went to Humboldt more than 50 years ago. Two direct descendants of the family, Mary and Frances Lipford, live in Memphis and still own the landmark log cabin home of the early Pigotts. Their mother was a Pigott who married a Lipford. During these early years before the Civil War, the only masses in this area were said 3 or 4 times a year in this home by priests from Humboldt. Source: History of St. Jude the Apostle Parish in Selmer February 17, 2005 Sisters Mary and Frances Lipford and their nephew Patrick have recently donated to the Diocese of Memphis Archives family heirlooms with a great deal of meaningful religious significance and sentimental value both to them and to Catholics in West Tennessee. These are artifacts, important to the religious life of the family, which were frequently used when missionary priests visited the region said Mass in their.....home. John Pigott, the great-grandfather of Frances and Mary and brothers Bill and Richard, and his brother Richard came to the United States from County Cork, Ireland, arriving in New Orleans in the late 1840s. After a couple of years in that city, the brothers and some of their families moved to Tennessee, purchasing farm land near Bethel Station, which later became Bethel Springs, in newly formed McNairy County. A step-brother of John and Richard and some of the older children remained in the New Orleans area. John and Richard Pigott and some of their children farmed in McNairy County for many decades. William, John's son, and Mary and Frances Lipford's grandfather, farmed in the area until he and his wife eventually retired to Bethel Springs, continuing to reside there until their death when their home was passed on to their surviving children and, eventually, to their Lipford grandchildren. On the farm, William and his wife Rachael, herself a convert who had come to Tennessee from North Carolina, raised ten children, four boys and six girls. The Lipfords' grandparents bore much of the responsibility, assisted by an occasional visiting missionary priest for teaching their children about their faith, teaching them their prayers and Catholic devotions, supervising whatever education they received concerning the Church, and providing the example of faith in and devotion to Catholic principles which would assure that their children would be true to their faith. They welcomed visiting missionary priests into their home where the priest would say Mass for the family and any Catholic neighbors. The visit of a priest rarely occurred more than once every three or four months due to the distances involved and the small number of priests. One of the earliest such circuit riding priest was Father Aloysiuis Orengo, an Italian Dominican, who came to west Tennessee in the 1840s and served the missions in West Tennessee for the next two-three decades. It is possible that Father Orengo may have said Mass for the Pigotts in their home during their early years in McNairy County Sacred Heart in Humboldt served many of the missions of West Tennessee, especially in the southern tiers of counties while missionaries from southern Kentucky often traveled into the counties of northwest Tennessee. The priests from Sacred Heart frequently said Mass at the Pigott farm home, and later at their home in Bethel Springs. Several of these priests from Sacred Heart, Humboldt, became close friends of the family with whom they frequently corresponded for many years. Two such priests were Father J.J. Buechler, the first pastor at Humboldt, whose name became the middle name of the Pigott's ninth child, Robert Buechler Pigott, and Father Edward Kuetter, who was pastor in Humboldt from 1903-1914. The artifacts which Mary and Frances Lipford donated to the Archives include a chest on which Mass was offered, the crucifix which hung over the chest, and one of a pair of candlesticks which was used on the makeshift altar when Mass was said in the Pigott home. The crucifix was also a focal point for daily prayers in the household, and one of the feet of the figure of Christ on the crucifix is well worn because their grandfather used to touch it each day as a gesture of prayer and respect. Obviously, the Pigotts did an excellent job of raising a large family, who remained Catholic. Two of the children, Maude Ellen, the sixth child, and Marguerite, the eighth, became Dominican nuns of the St. Cecilia Community in Nashville, Sister Bonaventure and Sister Perpetua, respectively. The youngest child, Angela, after her parents moved into town, attended school at St. Cecilia's, Nashville, and after graduation, studied to become a nurse. Mary Grace, the third of the ten Pigott children, the mother of Frances, Mary, Bill and Richard Lipford, married William F. Lipford, who also had been raised in McNairy County in a family that had engaged in farming and in the timber industry in Bethel Springs, an important center for that industry. He had moved to Memphis before he and Mary Grace were married, and after their marriage, they raised their children in Memphis. They attended Immaculate Conception parish for much of the time, in an area with many more Catholics, Catholic priests, nuns, and services than their parents and older relatives had known in rural West Tennessee Shelby County, TN Death Certificates 1902-1939 LIPFORD A J 1/14/1930 24 YRS M B 2393 LIPFORD DANIEL FRANK 12/15/1923 59 YRS M W 3487 LIPFORD HENRY F 2/11/1929 48 YRS M W 617 LIPFORD JAMES 7/5/1904 25 YRS M B 5083 LIPFORD JOHN WILLIAM 7/12/1932 30 YRS M W C 148 LIPFORD MARY MRS 6/21/1923 67 YRS F W 1858 LIPFORD MATTIE J 1/16/1931 28 YRS F W 2295 LIPFORD RICHARD AMOS NOAH 2/8/1929 67 YRS M W 582 LIPFORD TERSA MANLEY 3/9/1920 50 YRS F W Notes for JOHN HENRY LIPFORD: John Henry Lipford was born about 1835 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, the son of Amos Lipford II and Elizabeth Frizzell Lipford. Perhaps the largest crowd ever to assemble at Rose Hill Cemetery were there for his burial. Source: Newspaper article On-line The many friends of D. F. (Frank) Lipford when they received the news of his tragic death at the hands of a highway man near midnight at his store in North Memphis, December 15, 1923, were horribly shocked. He was shot to death and his bullet ridden body was found soon after behind a counter in his store. Scattered about the floor were pieces of torn money and checks and silver. How much money was obtained by the robber has not been ascertained. Police and detectives are working on the case, but so far have been unable to unravel this mysterious and brutal murder. The deceased was 60 years of age and had been a resident of Memphis for thirty years where he had prospered in business. He was a son of John H. and Mary Lipford and was reared on the old home place near Bethel Springs. He remained on the farm until he attained his majority. For several years he was a student of the late M. R. Abernathy at the old Purdy school, and taught successfully in the public schools of the county for many years. Frank Lipford was a clean and honorable man, and a most exemplary citizen. His dealings were straight forward and he had many friends. He loved his people and his native county and was always happy when opportunity afforded a visit to the scenes of his earlier days. His devotion to his parents during their lifetime and to his brothers was a most beautiful trait of his character. He was firm he was gentle, he was courageous, he was generous. He was a vigorous minded man, a safe and a wise counselor. He played life's game fair, he believed in and practiced the Golden Rule. He is survived by his brothers R. A. N., C. A., W. F, Pat Jim, Jobe and George, and numerous other relatives in this county and elsewhere. All the brothers, except Jobe were here. Jobe is in Arizona and his physical condition would not permit the long trip. Funeral services were held in Memphis and in Jackson en route and were concluded at the ( unable to read ). mortal remains of Frank Lipford were laid to rest. There the funeral services were concluded by Father Reid The largest crowd perhaps that ever gathered at Rose Hill composed of the old friends of the deceased was splendid testimonial to life and character attesting by their presence the high esteem in which they held him in life. R. H. Gooch was the undertaker in charge with John Swain, C. C. Plunk, Thad Spencer, W. K. and Terry Abernathy and Harmon Hodges as active pall bearers. We surely do mourn the loss of this good man, and another of the old friends of our family and of the Independent. Our sympathies are extended his brothers in their bereavement. iii. CHARLES A.
