Hi Chris, At 08:09 PM 07/13/2006, you wrote: >I trust this may be of interest. Absolutely of interest. I know NOTHING about my Commiskey's, other than the fact that they were in Brooklyn, Kings County, NY; that there is a HUGE monument at their family grave site in St John's Cemetery, Queens County, NY, and that the oldest daughter (Bridget "Delia") of my Nelligan immigrant family married an unknown Commiskey some time prior to 1872. The Comerford / Commiskey "connection" was just some information that was sent to the list before I took over. HOWEVER, in that case the person claimed that their family actually changed their name from one to the other. Commiskey is a minor sub-line in my ancestral tree, so I have not really expended much energy on it, other than to TRY to find the man that Delia married. I know who their son was, and where he lived and died, but I have yet to find Delia's husband. Very frustrating. From Chris PIGOTT: Joe, I cannot help with any connection between COMERFORD & CUMMISKEY - I would have to be quite blunt in suggesting I cannot see how there could be, but as with most things, I am prepared to admit I may be wrong. There is a man who would know, & who can be more blunt than I, living in Dublin, a descendent of the PIGOTTs of Loughrea in Co Galway, & whose wife was a COMERFORD. He is the admirable gent who has copied & transcribed all the indexed Memoirs of PIGOTT deeds held in the Deeds Registry, Henrietta St, Dublin, 1708 to 1800+, which he hopes to get published in the lead-up of the Registry's 300th anniversary celebrations in 2008. I will drop him a line. As to the possibility of an Irish Quaker connection, I suppose it cannot be ruled out. I would prefer to complete sending my summary of the Irish PIGOTTs of my connection before going into that in detail. I would have had another section ready today but for bringing the wrong note-book! But to keep the appetite whetted, there were a number of my line connected with the town of Mountmellick, Queen's Co, in the mid 1700's, & Mountmellick was known to be a Quaker town; and the Capard PIGOTTs also had Quaker sypmathies, being seated not too far from Mountmellick; also my PIGOTT/MAGUIRE/PHAIR descendents were probably related to Col Robert PHAIRE, the Regicide whose name was on the warrant for the execution of Charles I, & as Governor of Cork during the Civil War, he was known to have been a Quaker sympathiser, although it is said he went further & became a Muggletonian! The problem for landed gentry, in Ireland as in England, was that Quakerism was seen as distinctly against the established order, & many of the landed gentry, as local Magistrates, were obliged to prosecute Quakers for non-payment of tithes, a basic ingredient in the rent & income cycle of the landed squire himself - if he went Quaker, he did himself out of income, & position in society. Little wonder so many of them went to America. It also remains a distinct possiblilty that junior members of the Cork PIGOTT families may have headed off to America, independently of their religious affiliations. Some details of those families to follow later. Regards, Chris. Are you interested in a GEDCOM of my line? The JOHN PIGGOTT/MARGERY BROWN line is pretty well established, but I come from DAVID HADLEY PICKETT via three generations of JEREMIAH PIGGOTT /PICKETT's. DAVID HADLEY PICKETT born Orange CO, NC is kind of a lost branch as he married outside the Society of Friends and was kicked out of the Quaker church. After serving in the Civil War, his family went west. FYI I am retiring in two months and plan on 'publishing' the two generations of research I have inherited plus what I have added. I currently have about 75 pages of text with much to add including first hand accounts. Ok, My thoughts! I have always wondered if John PIGGOTT Sr. (who marreid Margery BROWN) came to the U.S. via Ireland because his wife's family and most of the Quaker families they lived with were from Ireland. I am the third generation to work on this geneology. Listed below is an excerpt from what my GG Uncle wrote: "It seems probable that most of those who are of Quaker ancestry and who spell the name PIGGOTT, Picket or PICKETT, descend from John PIGGOTT Sr. and his second wife Margery BROWN PIGGOTT. This couple, at the time of their deaths, were residents of Susquehannah Hundred, Cecil County, Maryland. They were members of the Society of Friends and worshipped at West Nottingham Preparative Meeting, then claimed to be in Pennsylvania. We find no trace of JOHN PIGGOTT SR. in Early Friends records before his first marriage to REBECCA HARDIMAN, at Concord Monthly Meeting, then in Chester County, Pennsylvania, in 1705. " This would have put this JOHN PIGGOTT SR. probably born abt 1680. Many of the Quaker families that settled in the dame area as my JOHN PIGGOTT came from Kings County (Dublin area) and County Cork, Ireland. Some were members of the Moate Meeting of Friends (Quakers), County Westmeath, Ireland. In other lines I am researching, I have found a common pattern of immigration of individuals from the same original communities. If you are going to immigrate, go where there are people you know! Therefore, I have suspected this Quaker JOHN PIGGOTT may have come from Ireland. This Irish line of PIGGOTT's appear to not be Quakers based upon the military service and religious implications written below. But this JOHN PIGGOTT may have converted to the Society of Friends (Quakers) and joined the others to immigrate on WIlliam Penn's bekoning. Hi List, Thanks to the generosity of Muriel Sonne, I now hold an Excel spreadsheet for PIGGOTT record extracts 1606 through 1808 for the above two localities. From the Parish Locater program I learned that Cowden is 5.3 miles at 111 degrees from Lingfield. If this data is of interest to any list member, I will be happy to forward the spreadsheet. Please let me know ON LIST, so that others may consider potential tie-ins with their lines. Regards, Joe Joe Bissett, PIGGOTT/CUMMISKEY List Administrator/Rootsweb I use America's Book CDs in my genealogical research to access otherwise unavailable primary source material. http://www.abcd-usa.com/ I support the Godfrey Memorial Library. http://www.godfrey.org/
Hi list, The silence is DEAFENING from those members with Irish PIG(G)OTT interests. I would be in "hog heaven" should I one day receive the type of detailed research provided by Chris to fill in the many voids in MY PIGGOTT line. Is there no member that is being helped, or confirmed, with this information? Speak up, PLEASE, so Chris will know that the time he has taken to provide this information was worth something. Here is his latest, more chronological compilation containing additional details beyond those which I originally posted. Chris has agreed to join the list, so your replies "on list" will get to him at the same time that I receive them. Hi List, Chris PIGOTT has kindly sent me additional detailed information. Regards, Joe >I should firstly explain that my confirmed PIGOTT lineage begins in >Dublin, in about 1759, with the birth of my gt-gt-gt-grandfather John PIGOTT. >John died at his res, 11 Charlotte st, Dublin, 1839, & was bur in >the Vicar's Bawn, St Patrick's Cathedral; he marr at St Catherine's, >Dublin, Dec 1793, Mary VICKERS (she was bur St Patrick's, 1829), & >had issue, including a son John, b Dublin, 1796, Collector of Public >Monies, who marr at St Peter's Dublin, Jun 1824, Elizabeth MAGUIRE >(a daur of his 1st cousin), & after her death in Dublin in 1854 >(also bur in St Patrick's Cathedral), emigrated to Brooklyn, where >several of his sons had gone to live. He was reported in London & >Dublin newspapers to have died in Sep 1877, although there is no >evidence on the ground in Brooklyn/New York. A pedigree of this >family was published in Volume 2 of HOWARD & CRISP's "Modern >Visitation of Ireland", 1895. > >Current research, including that among property Deeds registered at >Henrietta St, Dublin (all indexed PIGOTT deeds from 1708 to 1800 >have now been transcribed by a distant relation & Genealogy >researcher in Dublin), indicate that the John PIGOTT born ca 1759 >was almost certainly the illegitimate son of Hester HILLCOCK (a daur >of Barnaby HILLCOCK, Vintner & Cock-fighting Pit Proprieter, of Cork >Hill, Dublin), by John PIGOTT (b ca 1700; d Dec 1763), one time Army >Captain & M.P. for the Borough of Banagher in the Irish Parliament, >of Ballynonty, Co Tipp, Dublin City, & of Loughteogue, Stradbally, & >Brockley Park in the Queen's Co, Ireland. >This John PIGOTT married three times, 1stly in London in Jan 1730, >Constantia Maria BURGOYNE, by whom he had issue daughters Frances & >Constantia Maria (marr Andrew ARMSTRONG, of Gallen, King's Co), marr >2ndly in Dublin, Katherine JOHNSTONE (widow of William BABINGTON), & >3rdly, in Dublin, ca 1759, Mary MUSGRAVE (widow of Hugh LUMLEY). I >have dates for these events at home, preferring not to trust to an >at times faulty memory recall system! > >John was a younger son of Captain John PIGOTT, of Kilcromin, Queen's >Co, & of New North Sound, Antigua, Leeward Islands, where he went, >as a Capt in the Duke of Bolton's (later HOLT's) Regiment, in 1690. >He there married Frances, daur of Lt William PROCTOR, Planter, & had >issue 8 children. Hi List, I found these PIGOTT treasures on another list. I have only extracted the two PIGOTT URLS. There are many others that you can see by reviewing the archives of the list at Rootsweb. Thanks so much to Sandra McLellan for compiling all of these links. If you are researching this line, please let her know that you found the information very useful. The list would also benefit by knowing if this is your line. I would LOVE to get an e-mail like this on MY PIGGOTT line. You make ME jealous!!! :-) Regards, Joe >Date: Thu, 29 Jun 2006 17:15:35 -0600 >From: Sandra McLellan <priestner@comcast.net> > >Source: LAGENWEB-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Uploads: 10 Jun 2006 pt 2 > http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/la/washingt/bible/pigott.txt >Nathaniel Washington Pigott Family Bible Records, Washington Parish, Louisiana >Submitted by Edie McKinney Talley >Transcribed by Ken Baughman > >************************************************ >Submitted to the LAGenWeb Archives >************************************************ >Copyright.
