    3. Hi List, I received the following reply from Matt Tompkins to my invitation to join our list. It looks to me like his kind offer will be of interest to certain of our list members. I know it is to me. Please contact Matt directly with your request. Joe >Alas, I don't actually have any Piggott ancestry - I'm a historian >and my interest in the Piggotts of Buckinghamshire derives from >their links to the villages I am studying - Great Horwood in north >Bucks and Chalfont St Peter/Hedgerley in south Bucks (next door to >Beaconsfield) in the 15th and 16th centuries. The Piggotts of >Doddershall, one of the great old gentry families of Buckinghamshire >(they still live in the manor house they built in Doddershall in the >1520s) originated in Little Horwood, next door to Great Horwood, in >the medieval period and owned land in Great Horwood itself. > >Incidentally, if any of your list members is descended from the >Doddershall Piggotts, or one of the other branches of the family who >lived in Little Horwood, Whaddon, Beachampton, Waddesdon and other >places around north Bucks and the neighbouring counties in the 16th >and 17th centuries, I can prove that the family's claim to be >descended from the medieval Pigots of Clotherholme, outside Ripon in >Yorkshire, is false - they actually descended from a family of >peasants living in Little Horwood since at least the early 14th >century. I'd be happy to email a paper I've written setting out all >the evidence to anyone who would be interested. > >Regards, > >Matt Tompkins Joe Bissett, PIGGOTT/CUMMISKEY List Administrator/Rootsweb I use America's Book CDs in my genealogical research to access otherwise unavailable primary source material. http://www.abcd-usa.com/ I support the Godfrey Memorial Library. http://www.godfrey.org/ Proud to be a member of LostCousins! http://www/LostCousins.com

    1. Find A Grave Web Site
    2. Joe Bissett
    3. There are 158 graves listed for PIGOTT and 170 graves listed for PIGGOTT on: http://www.findagrave.com/ This is a wonderful site for mainly North American (but also Commonwealth War) graves. They have a very nice volunteer service who have already sent me pictures of some of my ancestral graves that were listed on the site. Another nice feature on the search page is a check box to include search for maiden name as well. So, for example, if you have a Mable PIGGOTT and you don't know her maiden name, if she is listed with her maiden name you can find both her and her name. This is exactly what happened with an ancestor that I was hunting for a fellow researcher. I STRONGLY recommend all list members to post their burial information on this web site, as it is sure to grow exponentially as researchers become more familiar with it. 1. PIGOTT of Chetwynd, Salop (I)
    2. Joe Bissett
    3. More from Chris Pigott: As promised earlier, the first part of my presumed extended line of PIGOTTs at "Chetwynd" in Edgmond Parish, Shropshire alias County Salop. Proof of a specific descent from this branch for my John PIGOTT of Dysart, Queen's County, Ireland (died 1570) is not yet forthcoming, & unlikely to be so in my time, but circumstantial evidence exists of a general connection - John's son Sir Robert PIGOTT of Dysart was granted use of the same Coat-of-Arms as that branch, albeit with a cadency mark, the "Crescent Or," for the 2nd son "for difference"; & several generations down the track, a branch of the family established in County Cork named their estate "Chetwynd." A possibility is discussed below. Richard PIGOTT, 3rd son of John PIGOTT of Butley, Cheshire; Justice in Eyre for the Hundred of Macclesfield, 1423, 1426; named with his brother John PIGOTT of Butley, Cheshire, as party to a plea in a suit brought by the Lord of Badington, 1429; Justiciar for Cheshire, 1431; granted a messuage in Shrigley, 1432; died 1440 [Inq.p.m.]; marr, ca 1430s, Jocosa de PESHALE (daur of Richard de PESHALE by a daur of Hugh MALPAS of Checkly, & co-heir of the Chetwynd estate which came from the CHETWYND family of her great-grandmother Johanna CHETWYND, wife of Sir Richard de PESHALL); issue: John PIGOTT, son & heir, b 1433-34; aged 6 in his father's Inq.p.m., 1440; commission issued for his arrest, Jan 1457-58, for using threatening language to Joan, widow of his uncle John PIGOTT, probably over her dower lands, & entered into a recognisance to her in the sum of 100 marks, 1459; marr Ellen, daur of Robert de LEIGH of Adlynton by his 2nd wife Isabel, daur of Sir William STANLEY, Knt, Lord of Hotton; issue: 1.
