    3. Hi List, Well, it look like I stumbled upon another Irish PIGOTT who made a significant contribution to the country. Here is a link to a history of William PIGOTT. His son, Paul PIGOTT succeeded him in business, which apparently passed down to his grandson Mark C PIGOTT. http://www.historylink.org/essays/output.cfm?file_id=3177 Enjoy! 3. Joe, I cannot identify this Richard PIGOTT. There were a number of Catholic PIGOTT families in Co Cork, & the fact they were Catholic suggests any connection to the Dysart line was remote. The Dysart PIGOTTs & their connections remained staunchly Protestant - that they had property made sure of that, especially in light of the fact that some of them died defending those properties by the sword. I have seen a few deeds relating to some Cork PIGOTT families, but none of them mention a Richard. If anything crops up, I will certainly be in touch. Regards, Chris.

    1. [PIGGOTT] How It Works!
    2. Joe Bissett
    3. Hi List, You have surely noticed that I am a strong advocate of the Lost Cousins project and web site. Here is what happened yesterday. I was having an e-mail exchange with my cousin Gillian PIGGOTT when we realized that I had not yet entered her maternal English ancestors on Lost Cousins. We worked together and I found the information on the 1881 UK census. We found her maternal GGF and six children in 1881, and I entered them to my LC database. After entering the data, I clicked the SEARCH button, and immediately received notification that I had seven new matches. I sent an e-mail (connections are totally private until both parties agree to communicate) to my new "Lost Cousin", who responded over night. Together now, we three will explore and exchange information as appropriate. I can not over emphasize the value of posting your information on Lost Cousins. If you have not yet done so, you may be missing out on that "key" connection that will help you break through your family "brick wall". I don't understand why more folks have not joined the Lost Cousins project. Basic membership is FREE :-) "Basic membership of LostCousins is free, and will remain so indefinitely provided that we can continue to grow through word of mouth recommendations. Not paying for advertising keeps our costs low, and enables us to offer free basic membership." The "key" contact for breaking through my PIGGOTT brick wall is out there "somewhere". For that "someone", the answer to MY problem is possibly common knowledge. Traditional methods for finding that information have failed me for two decades. Lost Cousins offers a whole new vista of potential contacts. If you have already posted your information to Lost Cousins, I would greatly appreciate a PRIVATE e-mail so that we can perhaps exchange ideas and information associated with that concept. Warm regards, Joe Joe Bissett, PIGGOTT/CUMMISKEY List Administrator/Rootsweb I use America's Book CDs in my genealogical research to access otherwise unavailable primary source material. http://www.abcd-usa.com/ I support the Godfrey Memorial Library. http://www.godfrey.org/ Proud to be a member of LostCousins! http://www.LostCousins.com/

    1. [PIGGOTT] Descendants of Richard Pigott (Chris??)
    2. Joe Bissett
    3. Hi List, This genealogy kindly submitted to us by "Beverly". How about it Chris? Can you tie in the Irish side? Joe Generation No. 1 1. RICHARD1 PIGOTT was born 14 Dec 1814 in Ireland, and died 15 Apr 1885 in Tennessee. He married FANNIE HODNIT. She was born 02 Feb 1818 in Ireland, and died 18 Aug 1879 in Tennessee. Child of RICHARD PIGOTT and FANNIE HODNIT is: 2. i. MARY JANE2 PIGOTT, b. 1842, County Cork, Ireland; d. 21 Jun 1923, Shelby County, TN. Generation No. 2 2. MARY JANE2 PIGOTT (RICHARD1) was born 1842 in County Cork, Ireland, and died 21 Jun 1923 in Shelby County, TN. She married JOHN HENRY LIPFORD 1860 in McNairy County, TN, son of AMOS LIPFORD and ELIZABETH FRIZZELL. He was born Abt. 1835 in Pittsylvania County, VA, and died 1893 in McNairy County, TN. Notes for MARY JANE PIGOTT: The first stories of Catholicism in this area date back to about 1830, prior to the Civil War, when the Pigott family from Ireland settled out on Beauty Hill Road near Bethel Station, which later became Bethel Springs. The log home they built that year still stands today, probably the oldest residence in McNairy County. Cemetery markers in Bethel Springs bear the names Richard Pigott 1878-1904, and C. Pigott 1878-1928, the last of the Pigotts in McNairy County since the family left here and went to Humboldt more than 50 years ago. Two direct descendants of the family, Mary and Frances Lipford, live in Memphis and still own the landmark log cabin home of the early Pigotts. Their mother was a Pigott who married a Lipford. During these early years before the Civil War, the only masses in this area were said 3 or 4 times a year in this home by priests from Humboldt. Source: History of St. Jude the Apostle Parish in Selmer February 17, 2005 Sisters Mary and Frances Lipford and their nephew Patrick have recently donated to the Diocese of Memphis Archives family heirlooms with a great deal of meaningful religious significance and sentimental value both to them and to Catholics in West Tennessee. These are artifacts, important to the religious life of the family, which were frequently used when missionary priests visited the region said Mass in their.....home. John Pigott, the great-grandfather of Frances and Mary and brothers Bill and Richard, and his brother Richard came to the United States from County Cork, Ireland, arriving in New Orleans in the late 1840s. After a couple of years in that city, the brothers and some of their families moved to Tennessee, purchasing farm land near Bethel Station, which later became Bethel Springs, in newly formed McNairy County. A step-brother of John and Richard and some of the older children remained in the New Orleans area. John and Richard Pigott and some of their children farmed in McNairy County for many decades. William, John's son, and Mary and Frances Lipford's grandfather, farmed in the area until he and his wife eventually retired to Bethel Springs, continuing to reside there until their death when their home was passed on to their surviving children and, eventually, to their Lipford grandchildren. On the farm, William and his wife Rachael, herself a convert who had come to Tennessee from North Carolina, raised ten children, four boys and six girls. The Lipfords' grandparents bore much of the responsibility, assisted by an occasional visiting missionary priest for teaching their children about their faith, teaching them their prayers and Catholic devotions, supervising whatever education they received concerning the Church, and providing the example of faith in and devotion to Catholic principles which would assure that their children would be true to their faith. They welcomed visiting missionary priests into their home where the priest would say Mass for the family and any Catholic neighbors. The visit of a priest rarely occurred more than once every three or four months due to the distances involved and the small number of priests. One of the earliest such circuit riding priest was Father Aloysiuis Orengo, an Italian Dominican, who came to west Tennessee in the 1840s and served the missions in West Tennessee for the next two-three decades. It is possible that Father Orengo may have said Mass for the Pigotts in their home during their early years in McNairy County Sacred Heart in Humboldt served many of the missions of West Tennessee, especially in the southern tiers of counties while missionaries from southern Kentucky often traveled into the counties of northwest Tennessee. The priests from Sacred Heart frequently said Mass at the Pigott farm home, and later at their home in Bethel Springs. Several of these priests from Sacred Heart, Humboldt, became close friends of the family with whom they frequently corresponded for many years. Two such priests were Father J.J. Buechler, the first pastor at Humboldt, whose name became the middle name of the Pigott's ninth child, Robert Buechler Pigott, and Father Edward Kuetter, who was pastor in Humboldt from 1903-1914. The artifacts which Mary and Frances Lipford donated to the Archives include a chest on which Mass was offered, the crucifix which hung over the chest, and one of a pair of candlesticks which was used on the makeshift altar when Mass was said in the Pigott home. The crucifix was also a focal point for daily prayers in the household, and one of the feet of the figure of Christ on the crucifix is well worn because their grandfather used to touch it each day as a gesture of prayer and respect. Obviously, the Pigotts did an excellent job of raising a large family, who remained Catholic. Two of the children, Maude Ellen, the sixth child, and Marguerite, the eighth, became Dominican nuns of the St. Cecilia Community in Nashville, Sister Bonaventure and Sister Perpetua, respectively. The youngest child, Angela, after her parents moved into town, attended school at St. Cecilia's, Nashville, and after graduation, studied to become a nurse. Mary Grace, the third of the ten Pigott children, the mother of Frances, Mary, Bill and Richard Lipford, married William F. Lipford, who also had been raised in McNairy County in a family that had engaged in farming and in the timber industry in Bethel Springs, an important center for that industry. He had moved to Memphis before he and Mary Grace were married, and after their marriage, they raised their children in Memphis. They attended Immaculate Conception parish for much of the time, in an area with many more Catholics, Catholic priests, nuns, and services than their parents and older relatives had known in rural West Tennessee Shelby County, TN Death Certificates 1902-1939 LIPFORD A J 1/14/1930 24 YRS M B 2393 LIPFORD DANIEL FRANK 12/15/1923 59 YRS M W 3487 LIPFORD HENRY F 2/11/1929 48 YRS M W 617 LIPFORD JAMES 7/5/1904 25 YRS M B 5083 LIPFORD JOHN WILLIAM 7/12/1932 30 YRS M W C 148 LIPFORD MARY MRS 6/21/1923 67 YRS F W 1858 LIPFORD MATTIE J 1/16/1931 28 YRS F W 2295 LIPFORD RICHARD AMOS NOAH 2/8/1929 67 YRS M W 582 LIPFORD TERSA MANLEY 3/9/1920 50 YRS F W Notes for JOHN HENRY LIPFORD: John Henry Lipford was born about 1835 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, the son of Amos Lipford II and Elizabeth Frizzell Lipford. How much money was obtained by the robber has not been ascertained. Police and detectives are working on the case, but so far have been unable to unravel this mysterious and brutal murder. The deceased was 60 years of age and had been a resident of Memphis for thirty years where he had prospered in business. He was a son of John H. and Mary Lipford and was reared on the old home place near Bethel Springs. He remained on the farm until he attained his majority. For several years he was a student of the late M. R. Abernathy at the old Purdy school, and taught successfully in the public schools of the county for many years. Frank Lipford was a clean and honorable man, and a most exemplary citizen. His dealings were straight forward and he had many friends. He loved his people and his native county and was always happy when opportunity afforded a visit to the scenes of his earlier days. His devotion to his parents during their lifetime and to his brothers was a most beautiful trait of his character. He was firm he was gentle, he was courageous, he was generous. He was a vigorous minded man, a safe and a wise counselor. He played life's game fair, he believed in and practiced the Golden Rule. He is survived by his brothers R. A. N., C. A., W. F, Pat Jim, Jobe and George, and numerous other relatives in this county and elsewhere. All the brothers, except Jobe were here. Jobe is in Arizona and his physical condition would not permit the long trip. Funeral services were held in Memphis and in Jackson en route and were concluded at the ( unable to read ). mortal remains of Frank Lipford were laid to rest. There the funeral services were concluded by Father Reid The largest crowd perhaps that ever gathered at Rose Hill composed of the old friends of the deceased was splendid testimonial to life and character attesting by their presence the high esteem in which they held him in life. R. H. Gooch was the undertaker in charge with John Swain, C. C. Plunk, Thad Spencer, W. K. and Terry Abernathy and Harmon Hodges as active pall bearers. We surely do mourn the loss of this good man, and another of the old friends of our family and of the Independent. Our sympathies are extended his brothers in their bereavement. iii. CHARLES A. Mr. Elphinstone Underwood, Deputy Magistrate, Madras The Times, Tuesday, Mar 22, 1870; pg. 11; Issue 26704; col E Appeals. House Of Lords, March 21. The noble and learned lords present this morning were the Lord Chancellor, Lord Chelmsford, Lord Westbury, and Lord Colonsay. THE SECRETARY OF STATE IN COUNCIL V. UNDERWOOD. The hearing of the arguments in this part-heard appeal from the decision of Vice-Chancellor Wood (the present Lord Chancellor) was resumed this morning. Sir Roundell Palmer, Q.C., Mr. Forsty, Q.C., and Mr. Macnaghten appeared for the appellant; Mr. Anderson, Q.C., Mr. Huddleston, Q.C., and Mr. Steele for the respondent. The respondent, Mr. William Elphinstone Underwood, was a member of the Civil Service of the East India Company on the Madras establishment, and was a subscriber to the Madras Civil Service Annuity Fund. On the 1st of May, 1860, he resigned the service and accepted an annuity of 1,000 l. per annum in accordance with the regulations of the fund, since when he has been in receipt of his annuity. The quest in this appeal was whether, in addition to the annuity, the respondent was entitled to a re-fund of the excess of the accumulated value of his contribution to the fund over and above the half value of the annuity, as fixed by the rules of the fund. At the conclusion of the arguments, Their LORDSHIPS reserved judgment. 3. Peter, Can you tell me anything about the parentage of your ancestor Glasden PIGGOTT? There appear to have been two - yours at Chatteris, Cambs, in 1841, with wife Mary (CRAWLEY) & 2 sons Crawley & James - & an elder one, probably too young to be father of yours, so perhaps instead a cousin, enumerated at St Ives, Hunts, 1841, aged 45+, with Elizabeth, & 3 children, William, Anne & Emma, all born in the county; he probably died at St Ives, Jun qtr 1862. The I.G.I. reveals no baptisms for any Glasden PIGGOTTs anywhere in England. Regards, Chris.

    3. Hello Chris, Thank you for your suggestions. Indeed I had not thought of the possibility of Rachel "running off with another man". I mean, one's relations do not do that sort of thing do they?(despite the fact that another one of mine decamped to the US of A with a younger lady - leaving wife and four children marooned in Twickenham!). I did indeed have the information of Rachel's ancestors, but it was kind of you to include it and I am grateful. Thank you again, Peter Norfolk.

    3. Joe, Cannot advise, except to suggest a possibilty that Rachel left PIGGOTT & went off somewhere, perhaps abroad, with someone else? Which might explain why John Crawley PIGOTTs "marriage" to Ada WYATT was not registered - it may not have been legally possible. I am presuming Peter has done wider research. There may be nothing untoward about the fact that in 1891, John C. PIGGOTT, Carpenter, his wife Rachel & son John C., aged 3, were enumerated at 2 Cinque Ports Terrace, Seaford, Sussex, while the younger son George PIGGOTT, aged 1, was with his grandmother Sarah MUNDEN (a Widow, Living on own Means) at 8 Spurgeon House, Cross St, Southwark, London. Or that Edmund & Sarah MUNDEN cannot be located in either English or Welsh Census returns in 1851. They would appear to have married in West London, Dec qtr 1845, she Sarah JONES (now there's a lucky break - a Welsh JONES!), prob born ca 1821 in Pontepool, South Wales (1861, 1871) or Merthyr Tidwell, Glamorganshire (1891). They were enumerated at 17 Chapel Place, Leather Market, Bermondsey, 1861, he a Plumber, b Ilminster, Somerset, with 4 ch'n - Mary A., aged 13, Jane, 7, George, 5, & Edmund Jr, 3. In 1871, they were at 20 Chapel Place, ditto, with 6 ch'n, including a daur Sarah, 20, who was not with them in 1861, but without Mary A., & with extras Rebecca, 10, & Rachael, aged 7. Edmund appears to have died at St Olave, Southwark, Jun qtr 1875; Sarah at St Saviour's, Southwark, Mar qtr 1900, aged 78. But Peter was probably aware of most, if not all of this. Regards, Chris PIGOTT, Potts Point, N.S.W.

Any help would be appreciated. Edward Charles Pemberton Pigott was Lt. & Adjutant of 44th Regiment Madras in 1859 when he married Eliza Ann UNDERWOOD (born 1840, daughter of William Elphinstone Underwood and Magdalene Thompson) on 24 December 1859 at St. Georges Cathedral, Madras. The only children I know of are Ethel C. (Christine or Christian) Pemberton Pigott in c1873 in Madras, Cecilia Valentine Pemberton Pigott on 14 February 1874 in Wellington, died 1875 in Surrey. My grandmother says Edward and Eliza had many children but I haven't found them! Ethel married Benjamin TODHUNTER from New Zealand in 1899. Eliza Ann Pemberton Pigott died in 1890 in Portsea Island, Hamps. On the cards was a Robert Edward Pemberton PIGOTT born 1866 died 1943. It says Bombay-Baroda & CI Railway Lt.Col. AF (I). 3. Hi Listers, Found on another list. Can anyone help Peter? Joe A cri de coeur. Rachel MUNDEN (named as Rachael on birth certificate) was born 3 December 1864, 26 Chapel Place, Longlane, Bermondsey. She appeared on the 1881 census as a "frilling box maker" aged 16 living with her mother, Sarah, and her siblings Edward, Rebecca and Annie (the last an adopted sister). The address has changed to 35 Chapel Place. Rachel married John Crawley PIGGOTT 24 May 1885 at St John's, Walworth, Southwark. Her resident address was given as 8 Spurgeon House, (presumably Southwark). At least two children were born of the union, John Crawley Piggott in the June quarter of 1888 and George Piggott in February of 1890. Rachel then manages to vanish. Rachel's husband, John Crawley next married one Ada Jemima Wyatt (date unknown) and, by Ada, had at least two children, Ada born June 1903 (who did not survive her first year) and Albert Edward born c 1907. Albert died in 1941. The IGI, Free BMD and each of the quarterly fiche covering deaths for the years 1890 to 1903 have been searched without success for the death of Rachel. I am at a complete loss to know where next to search. The nearest entry I have managed to find is for one Rachel Piggott dying in the 1st quarter of 1897 in the district of St Olave BUT aged 52 - my lass should, at that time, have been only 33 or thereabouts. It is, of course, possible that the given age has been mistranscribed. Can the collective wisdom of the list suggest the next move? You would have the gratitude of Rachel's descendant relatives in the far North of Scotland, Australia, England and Canada if we could find her and lay her decently to rest. 1. Re: [PIGGOTT] Susan PIGGOTT / Richard MONONGE, m. 14 Jan 1879

    3. Hi Linda, Just do a search on the Home Page of Ancestry.com using only the name Mononge. I fell off my chair to see SIX different valid Irish immigrant records in the mid 1800s!!! One is JOHN arriving in New York in April 1850. I then tried to find anything remotely like Mononge in the 1850 and 1860 census, but all I got back was a million Manning records. So.... I guess Mononge is in fact a valid Irish name. That certainly fits the pattern of Irish immigrants mainly marrying other Irish folks (Mary Gleason). I'm hoping Chris Pigott sees this and makes a comment. At 05:38 PM 07/30/2007, Linda Payne wrote: >I'm sure we'll make better progress when you get the >certificate.
