Joe, Another note I had intended to add at the beginning of these postings was to acknowledge the numerous PIGOTT pedigrees, not all, it would seem, entirely accurate, published by LISCOMBE in his "History of Buckinghamshire." I do not have the full citation for that publication in front of me, but can get it if needed. But, to continue: [F] PIGOTT OF COLEWICK, MARCHAM & HATFORD. I've just noticed some further Pigott details in the book, wih regards church memorials: 'On the east wall of the south transept, placed high and difficult to read, is a memorial to members of the Pigott family, probably associated wth the earlier mentioned Granado Pigott. It Reads:- Near this place lyes interred the body of Robert Pigott Who departed this life 10th February 1757, aged 54 years Also Samuel his son aged 10 days. Also Susan the wife of Robert Pigott who died 7th May 1779 aged 66 years. Mary Ann, daughter > of Granado Pigott and Sarah Henry married a Richard. His father John. I'm sure I've seen mention of Burkett/Burkitt but typically I can't find the reference at the moment. I'll have another look. Cheers, PeterP
Hi List, Ancestry.com lists 92 separate PIGGOTT entries for Alumni of Cambridge, 1291-1900. Six entries are from the line currently under discussion from Cambridgeshire. They are shown in the attached text file. As I did my review, I note that there are also several from the BUCKS line that Chris has just completed, as well as the Irish PIGOTT lines that Chris posted in earlier series. Chris, I suspect that you already hold all of this information and have integrated it into your posts. However, it might be useful to others for me to summarize this information based on the "lines", as I have done with the Cambridgeshire line. Any ideas? Jen, this might be of interest to you .. Chris Pigott wrote (2003): I note your interest in the PIGOTT/PIGGOTTs of Hadenham. I have some notes that might be of interest. Mary Ann PIGOTT, daur of Granado PIGOTT of Hadenham, Tradesman, marr at Haddenham, 31 Dec 1839, Richard BURKITT, Labourer, witnessed Lorenzo & Susanna PIGOTT. Granado PIGOTT, Tradesman, had issue by wife Ann, who was bur at Hadenham, 18 Nov 1803: Edward PIGOTT, bt 26 Mar 1796. Mary, bt 7 Jan 1799. Granado PIGOTT (possibly the same) had (poss further) issue in Haddenham by Margaret ELLIS (perhaps a 2nd wife): Charles PIGOTT, bt 31 Aug 1807. Granado PIGOTT, Schoolmaster in Hadenham, marr Hadenham, 1815, Sarah HENRY, & had issue: Granado PIGOTT, bt Gt Hormead, Herts (poss Sarah's mother's parish), 28 May 1815. Lorenzo, bt Ely Isle, 18 Jan 1818. Susannah, bt Bourne, Cambs, 23 Jan 1820; went to N.Z.; marr Wellington, 17 Mar 1847, Benjamin Mendez PERIERA, late of Marseilles, Storekeper in Wellington (text of marr registration suggests her father "Granado PIGOTT of Hadenham, Isle of Ely" was still living. Harriet, bt Bourne, 26 Dec 1821; bur there 26 Jun 1822. It looks like Lorenzo b 1818 & Susannah b 1820 were the witnesses to Mary Ann's 1839 marriage. I have no idea how Susannah came to be in N.Z., nor whether she went there alone or with others of the family. Does this make sense? Regards, Chris PIGOTT (Sydney, N.S.W.)
Some other articles that included the Granado Piggott name: Joshua Finch also came to Cambridge to settle, in about 1745, and it was to him that his cousin William left the iron business. Joshua prospered and became an alderman. His son Charles married a Sarah Smith whose uncle Mr Stanton was vicar of South Moulton, Northants and the couple had three daughters and a son, also Charles. In 1823 "Messrs Charles Finch and Son" subscribed £30 to the rebuilding of the Great Bridge at Cambridge. Charles snr was clearly one of the chief men of the town. With his brother Thomas Day Finch of Great Shelford, and John Mortlock and the rather grandly named Granado PIGGOTT, he was among the trustees appointed under the 1797 Cambridge to Abington Road Act. In 1812 he sat with John Cheetham Mortlock and Frederick Cheetham Mortlock on a Grand Jury re Mr Walsh MP robbing Sir Thomas Planer of £22,000, a juicy local scandal we may be sure. Another Piggott: The Lords of the Manor presided at Chilverton Elms in a mansion built by Peter Nepueu in 1640. This probably replaced a much earlier building, as, after the Norman Conquest, the Manor was held by a family who took the name of Hougham. One of this family, Robert de Hougham, fought with his King Richard I at Aeon in Palestine(?) Another member was associated with Stephen de P?ts, Constable of Dover Castle, 1165-1198. Yet another Richard de Hougham was Prior of Dover Priory, 1350-1351. Nepueu was a Frenchman who came to live in England after the Edict of Nantes, and there is a monument to his memory in Hougham Church. The occupants of the "Elms" during Ingram's lifetime were Robert Lacey up to 1746 - he was Sheriff of Kent in 1739, then Granado PIGGOTT (or Pickett) to 1749, Phineas Stringer snr. (1749-1759) and finally Phineas Stringer jnr. By 1825 the mansion was apparently unoccupied and falling into disrepair.
Peter, I was wondering if the book mentioned maybe which church in Haddenham the Pigott's belong too. As mentioned below.. Not sure but I've heard that tombstones would not last long past maybe 50 + years. Not sure if true in England if any would still be there back in late 1700's or early 1800's. Jerry >Earlier in the book Judith is mentioned - >'On 27th January 1788, Judih Pigott was buried, who is commemorated on >a beautiful oval memorial on the south wall of the church.' > >Don't know if that help anyone. > >Cheers, > >PeterP > > > > >
Peter, thanks so much in sharing this data !! This is my line so I'm very interested in whatever you have on Pigott's of Haddenham. In the book, any mention of Burkett/Burkitt of Haddenham.. Mary Ann, daughter of Granado Pigott and Sarah Henry married a Richard. His father John. Have they not suffered above two Kings to die in their beds these 200 years. Our King hath hardly escaped them..." - the harangue passed censure at the time, but the King was incensed that he had not been punished - which he then was; arrested by the Sergeant-at-Arms, he was brought before the Bar of the House, but the members tired of him, & he was ordered to be committed to the Tower, & dismissed from the House, & from his position as Knight for the Shire; he languished in the Tower until 27 Feb, "...sick with a burning fever & in danger of his life"; the House, after slow deliberations with the King, moved for clemency, & he was released from the Tower, but not reinstated to the House; he died at Doddershall, 24 Oct 1613, & was buried at Hogshaw, aged about 55; marr 1stly, Ursula PIGOTT (daur & coheir of Valentine PIGOTT of Loughton - see earlier posting); issue: 1. Peter, I found your information very interesting, and its left me with a number of questions. So if anyone has an opinion on the following let me know. I found the reference to Granado Pigott as a young attorney especially interesting as my Pigotts of Ely were also solicitors/attorneys, and I've been curious to know the occupation of a couple of Granado Pigotts of Ely. What I'm wondering from your information is if this refers to not one but two Granado Pigotts - Grando Pigott or Ellis of Haddenham & Granado Pigott of Ely? My relative Richard Pigott was a solictor from Ely who married Sarah Haylock of Downham (Sarah's mother was Mary Haylock Eagle). Sarah had a sister Anne Haylock who married William Cole Jr in 1783 in Downham. Anne died in 1784. I did briefly try to find out if this William Cole jr. was the son of Rev. William Cole but I didn't want to get too sidetracked from the Pigotts. Richard Pigott had a brother called Granado. I came across a record relating to a Granado Pigott farmer & grazier (of Ely?) 1806 - ref. Familychest. In Richard's will he leaves land to his brother Granado, so I have assumed that this Granado was a farmer & grazier, but I may very well be wrong. Richard Pigott's two sons were Henry Pigott (an Ely attorney) and Granado Pigott - I haven't discovered his occupation but I thought that he might have been a farmer. Now I'm wondering if this is the young Granado Pigott of Ely that your referred to? This Granado was born in 1785 and died in 1840. I haven't found him mentioned in the early Cambridgeshire directories from the Historical Directories website. It was also interesting about your reference to manorial estates as my Pigotts were involved in manorial estates - Richard briefly owned a manor in Soham & his son Henry & Henry's daughters held the manorial rights to Little Thetford. I thought that I'd seen a reference to the occupation of Granado Pigott Ellis of Haddenham as a labourer (maybe someone can help me out with this? This is what made me think that Peter's information refers to two Granado Pigotts - Granado Pigott Ellis labourer and Granado Pigott of Ely attorney. Maybe I'm completely wrong and Granado Pigott Ellis was the attorney?? Confused Jen N.S.W.

Hi List, Peter PIGGOTT has joined in with some additional information. Thanks, Peter !! :-) Hi Joe, Yes please, I would be interested in your Excel file - as a Piggott, living and growing up in Cambridgeshire - although my line is from one of the Cottenham Piggotts. Living in Haddenham, I have a copy of 'A Parish History of Haddenham Isle of Ely' by Charles F.Bester. He makes reference to Granado and familly a few times - I don't know if the information will help others looking in to that line. The book says, referring to the parish and its register: 'The next memorial in its beautiful simplicity records the sad, early death of Judith Pigott. "In memory of Judith the wife of Granado Pigott who died 20th January 1788 aged 20 years." Granado Pigott was a young attorney who was engaged to deal with manorial estates in the parish. He also dealt with the estate of the Rev. William Cole of Milton who owned considerable property in Haddenham, and his name is recorded in the tower of St Clements Church, Cambridge, where the inscription reads, "The first stone of this steeple was laid by Mr Granado Pigott of Ely the legal representative of the laste Revd. William Cole of Milton on the 6h day of June 1821." The Pigott familly was associated with the parish of Abington Pigotts, having held the manor there from 1427 to 1802. According to the Parish Register Judith Wray, the eldest daughter of David Wray, married Grando Pigott Ellis on 23rd January 1787. The use of Ellis as a surname was used later in the familly, but it appears that the name Pigott was usually preferred. A son was born on 22nd April 1787 and was baptised on 6th June 1787, receiving the names of David Wray Pigott. Granado soon married again, for on 30th September 1791 we find an entry in the register recording the baptism of Lorenzo, son of Granado and Ann Pigott. Ann died on 18th November 1803, and Granado marries for the third time, for on 18th November 1806 his son George Crow was baptised.' Earlier in the book Judith is mentioned - 'On 27th January 1788, Judih Pigott was buried, who is commemorated on a beautiful oval memorial on the south wall of the church.' Don't know if that help anyone. Hi Joe, The following are copies of my replies to Zimmy & Chris. Sorry I'm still learning how all this works! Before I posted my information to Joe I realised that I had some of Granado Pigott Ellis' children listed as his brother Henry's children, fortunately I saw my error in time! So I apologise if I've made or am about to make errors, it's easy to do, especially with all the marriages and children amongst the Haddenham Pigotts. Once again I will use the spelling Pigott (which is the most common amongst my branch) as it gets too hard to list the different spellings. Firstly I have a copy of my ancestor Richard Pigott's Will of 1814. He was a solicitor from Ely Holy Trinity. In his Will he gives his brother Granado Pigott land for him to live on for the remainder of his life (then when Granado dies the property goes to Richard's son Granado). There is no mention of Richard's brother Granado having heirs. I have found no record of him having married. I'm inclined to think that he isn't the father of the Haddenham Pigott Ellis branch & that it's probably Granado Pigott b. 1705 or do you think I'm way off track? When I was trying to sort out these Granado Pigotts I came across the reference to Granado Pigott and the bastardy bond to Mary Ellis. The information simply states Granado Pigott, gent. whereas other names might have a place name attached. So I think that if this Granado was an Abington Granado it would have 'of Abington' after his name. I think that the bastardy bond relates to an Ely Granado, as there were two Granado Pigotts of Ely Trinity and/or Ely Mary (it can be an important distinction to make in determining Pigott branches although the Granado's were from both parishes - I know confusing!). I found this information on an interesting website - you can simply google Cambridgeshire online archives or go to www.Cambridgeshire.gov.uk/leisure/archives/catalogue. It is the CALM online catalogue & I've found that other counties also have online catalogues (I've just discovered one for East Riding Yorkshire). You need to be exact with your spelling of your Pigott name. There are many entries for Pigotts of Royston. There was also another entry for Mary Ellis for 1750. Since there were many Mary Ellis' of Ely St. Mary I don't know if this entry and the one for the arrest warrant are for the same Mary Ellis as the Bastardy bond. I was curious about how the Pigotts ended up in Haddenham, as there doesn't seem to be any Pigotts in Haddenham prior to the late 18th century. I came across a Robert (shopkeeper? - I'm using my memory here!)& Sarah Pigott of Haddenham Cambridgeshire Family History society lists them in the database of masters and their apprentices. I haven't been able to place them yet with other Pigotts, but I don't think that they are related to the Ellis Pigotts. There was also a Philip & Amy Pigott of Haddenham (children: Naomi 1806, Susan 1807, Mary 1809). A Philip Pigott was born 1775 to parents John & Elizabeth Pigott of Cottenham. Philip Pigott married Amy Porter in 1805 in Haddenham. Once again I don't think he was connected with the Ellis Pigotts but can't be sure? When I came across the 2 marriage records of Mary Ellis of Ely marrying men from Haddenham, it seemed to be a missing puzzle piece that fit the picture (or the obsessive picture in my head!) of how they arrived in Haddenham. I found the marriage records on the website www.familyhistoryonline.net which has very comprehensive records (much better than IGI) for Cambridgeshire, but not necessarily for Haddenham! (I didn't find Mary Ellis Glenton's children here but instead on IGI, nor could I find certain Barrets on the above website). I can send you the inf. with exact dates, for the Ellis Pigotts I have, if you are interested. What makes this inf. so much better than IGI is that it often lists marriage witnesses, as well as giving inf. such as whether the person was widowed, unmarried, if a child was base, what parish they were from, age & occupation at death. Also whether they were unable to read - names marked with a cross? (not being a genealogist, I assume this is what a cross means!) I have found though that sometimes the index has recorded the wrong name e.g. looking for say a Sarah Pigott I've paid for the record and found that its actually a Carolina Pigott - but this has happened infrequently so far. IGI has - the Granado Pigott Ellis marriage to Margaret Crow 15 Apr 1805 Wilburton. Batch no. M138521 - Granado Pigott m Judith Wray 23 Jan 1787 Haddenham B.n. M138162 - Granado Pigott-Ellis m. Ann Tuck 23 Nov 1789 Harston B.n. M130871 - the marriages of Mary Ellis 1779 & Mary Ellis 1778 B.n. M013412 - Henry Pigott or Ellis m. Sarah Robinson 4 Jan 1791 Haddenham B.n. M138162 - Robert Pigott m. Sarah Brand 2 Nov 1769 Haddenham - Sarah Barret m. Henry Pigott Ellis 26 Jan 1817 Haddenham I have found the Cambridgeshire Family History Society Searchable Database (for births and burials from 1801 to 1836) an invaluable tool (I wish that all the counties had such a free database!). www.cfhs.org.uk I used this to find the Ellis Pigott children of Granado & his wives, Granado and Sarah, and Henry. It's extremely confusing as they are listed under the names Ellis, P Ellis and or Pigott. e.g. Charles Pigott son of Granado is recorded under the names Charles Ellis and Charles Pigott. George C. Pigott b. 1806 is listed as the son of Granado & Margt. & I think that the C possibly stands for Crow? I found the inf. you posted in 2006 on the Ely Pigotts when I first started my research and it's been very useful, so thankyou Chris. I have copies of the wills of two of my relatives, which I downloaded from the National Archives. I have transcribed them as best as I can. One is from Henry Pigott, solicitor of Ely, who was also the Lord of the Manor of Thetford (or Little Thetford). The other is the will of his father Richard Pigott, also a solicitor, and who owned for a short period, the manorial rights to Soham. It took me a while to realise that one of Richard's witnesses to his will, was a name that I had come across before (actually in your posting). This name is Margaret Kitchener. When I did some digging I discovered that this was his sister. Children of William Pigott (butcher of Ely Trinity) and Elizabeth Atkin: 1. Granada Piggott baptised 23 Feb 1738 Ely, Holy Trinity. Hi List, This is part one to the latest series of detailed information from Chris PIGOTT. I know we have Doddershall researchers on the list. Joe I have a lot of information on the very large group of PIGOTT families, particularly in Buckinghamshire, & who descend from the Sergeant-at-law Thomas PIGOTT or his near relations. These PIGOTTs are not of my connection, so I had been leaving it up to some-one of that descent to make a posting, & am fairly sure there are a number about, with some in America. They comprise the much vaunted "Doddershall" branch. But it hasn't happened - and so, I bite the proverbial bullet. I owe a debt for the following to the usual sources - Visitation pedigrees; Chetham & Surtees publications; BURKE & other's Commoners, Landed Gentry & Baronetage; etc. But I owe a particular debt to Godfrey BRAMHALL, of Higham's Park in London when I last communicated with him back in the 1990s, who inspired my re-think into this branch with his illuminating research, privately published. And I am emboldened by Matt THOMPKINS' recent research into the Bucks - Yorks supposed connection, claimed in the "Doddershall Pedigree", and his clear quite independant establishment of proofs, where some of mine & Godfrey's research had begun pointing to "evidentiary difficultes" in the "established" pedigrees. Any advice on errors will be gladly received. ___________________________________________________________________ THE BUCKINGHAMSHIRE PIGOTTS. Arms - "Sable, Three Millpicks, Argent."
