    3. Hi List, Extracted from another list. This is a part of a long genealogy of John BELL in Craven County. If anyone needs the entire message, please let me know off list. Joe Notes for Joshua Simpson: WIll of May 28, 1803, proved Sept. Court 1809. According to Rebecca's Sander's will book, Joshua Simpson's will does not mention a son named Absolom. However, on 26 Jan. 1819, Absalom, and his siblings Jean Pinkham, Sarah Whitehurst, and Charlotte Simpson sold for $352 to Jechonias Pigott of the Town of Beaufort 136 acres of land on the west side of North River given them "by the Last Will and Testament of Joshua Simpson senr. Decd. viz (Absalom 80 ac, Jane 20 ac, Sarah 20 ac, and Charlotte 16 ac) (S, 134). Perhaps "Abraham" was Absalom. Court minutes of Mar. 5, 1810 recorded "John Simpson returned the inventory of the estate of Joshua Simpson, decd." 3. Joe, Another sibling pair at a school in Ely: 1841 Census Returns, Cambridgeshire - Faze Hill, Ely Holy Trinity: William TRIGG, Schoolmaster, with his wife & 2 children. (+ a Teacher). ... Richard PIGOTT, 15, Pupil, born in county. Henry PIGOTT, 14, Pupil, born in county. ... I presume these were the two brothers Jen listed in her last, as issue of Henry PIGOTT & Mary CARRINGTON. Also in Ely in 1841 were these parents & several of their remaining issue: Rampton Court, Market St, Ely: Henry PIGOTT, Attorney, 55+, born in county. Mary PIGOTT, 45+, b in county. Hannah PIGOTT, 12, b in county. William PIGOTT, 9, b in county. Eliza PIGOTT, 8, b in county. (+ 2 servants). And another family, perhaps related? Broad St, Ely, 1841: Perry PIGOTT, 70+, Ind., b in county. Wiliam KNOWLES, 30+, b in county. Ann KNOWLES, 30+, b ib county. I wonder if Ann KNOWLES may have originally been a PIGOTT? I have at home a collection of details about some earlier Ely PIGOTTs who were Brickmakers, but I cannot remember whether I posted anything about them on your List? Regards, Chris.

    1. [PIGGOTT] Pigott of Ely
    2. DAVE AND JEN BLYTH
    3. Hi Joe, I have some more information relating to Chris' last posting. Hopefully it corresponds with the information he has. Perry Pigott of Ely was a distant cousin to my Pigotts of Ely. Perry and his wife Alice had a daughter Ann Pigott b. 1806 Ely Holy Trinity. So I presume that this is the Ann Knowles Chris found in the 1841 Census. I've seen mention of Perry Pigotts from the London area but I haven't looked for a connection between the London Perrys and the Ely Perrys. - John Pigott b. 1668 Ely was the son of Richard & Margaret Pigott. Married to Elizabeth. - John Pigott b. 1701 Ely was the son of John & Elizabeth Pigott. Married to Hannah. I'm not sure if this is the John Pigott of Ely who was a cordwainer. John had a brother christened 'Pargrindine" - thought that this might be a miss-spelling of Peregrine? - Perry Pigott b. 1737 Ely was the son of John & Hannah Pigott. Married to Rebecca Butty. - Perry Pigott b. 1770 Ely was the son of Perry & Rebecca Pigott. Married to Alice. Yes Chris did post his Pigott brickmakers of Ely. I was wondering if Chris could look for a reference to the above mentioned Richard Pigott (who I'm pretty sure I'm related to) as a brickmaker (I believe he was born in 1626). I found a record of a Richard Pigott of Ely's burial in 1676 and thought that this must be him but it doesn't give his occupation. I know that Margaret his wife died a widow in 1678. I tried to find out if I was connected to the brickmaker Pigotts but if there was a connection it was before 1600. The brickmaker Pigotts of Ely I have are: William b. 1594. d. 1648 Brickmaker. m.. Eliz. Malden 1619. Children: 1. John b. 1619 d. 1673 Brickmaker. m. Margt. Lawrence 1653 2. Sarah 1619 3. Mary 1618 4. Eliz. 1620 5. Martha 1625 d. 1630? 6. Sarah 1627 7. William 1629 d. 1687? Referred to on burial record as 'Mr". Other records for the brickmakers refer to them as "Mr Brickmaker" So I was wondering if William was also a brickmaker? 8. Robert 1631 d. 1700 Brickmaker. m. I have had a confusing time trying to place the various Richard Pigotts of Ely. I remember coming across a reference to Richard Pigott the son of Henry and Bridget as having married (possibly on the IGI website). But I have a burial record for a Richard Pigott inf. in 1687. I can't imagine that this could be Richard Pigott b. 1685 (son of William and Ann) so I have assumed that this Richard Pigott infant is Henry and Bridget's son. Jen

    3. Hi Joe, Chris listed some information on Richard, Ernest and Harry Pigott of Ely, so I thought that I'd add the information that I have. It seems to match Chris' information. Richard Pigott was the brother of my gt.gt.gt. grandfather William Pigott born in Ely. Their parents were Henry Pigott and Mary Carrington. Their children were: 1. Caroline Pigott 1824 -1824 Ely 2. Richard Carrington Pigott 1826-1908 Ely 3. Henry Pigott 1827 -1846 Ely 4. Mary Pigott 1828-1828 5. Hannah Mary Pigott 1829-1900 Ely 6. Ann Pigott 1830 - before 1841 Ely 7. William Pigott 1831-1878 Ely 8. Eliza Pigott 1832-1906 Ely William Pigott was an articled clerk (his father and grandfather had both been solicitors), living in Cambridge with his cousin Elizabeth Pigott Lawrence and her husband Juner Perry Lawrence (a solicitor) - 1841 Census. His father Henry Pigott died in March 1855, leaving in his will land in Ely and money to William. Then in May 1855 William married his Cambridge next door neighbour Susannah Langran in Clapham, Surrey. A few months later their first child Lavinia Carrington Pigott was born. In the next couple of census, William is described as a 'landed proprieter' and 'ind. He died in Wandsworth 1878 (my mother was worried that he might be the William Pigott who was suspected of being Jack The Ripper, but fortunately for us I don't think the dates matched up!). By the time of his death William had obviously gone through much of his inheritance, because by the 1891 census his daughter Lavinia Pigott was in a Clapham workhouse (aged 35) and she died a few years later. Hannah Mary Pigott married and Ely solicitor George Samuel Hall, who was also the Ely registrar & high bailiff of the County Court. Their children were: 1. Frances Mary Hall 1856 Ely 2. George Martin Hall 1859 Ely (Was the Coroner for the Southern division of Ely) 3. Annie Rose Alexandra Hall 1863 4. Henry Radcliffe S (also known as Stewart?) Hall 1867 Ely 5. Allice M Hall 1870 Ely 6. Agnes M Hall 1871 Ely Richard Carrington Pigott was a farmer in Ely. He married Mary Ann English Cross. Their children were: 1. 3. Joe, I found this reference in one of my early note-books, being in a sequence of extracts from School/College Registers: "King's College, Ely, Cambridgeshire: "Ernest PIGOTT, b May 1865, son of H. PIGOTT, 4 Hills Lane, Ely; Day Boy, 1876. Business. "Harry PIGOTT, b Oct 1860, 4 Hills Lane, Ely; Day Boy, 1876. Business." I had an idea that these two boys were instead the sons of Richard PIGOTT & Mary Ann English CROSS (who were married at Hackney, London, Mar qtr 1860), & enumerated, along with other siblings, with these parents, & at this address, in later Ely Census returns. Was there another family? Can your Ely PIGOTT Listers help out here? Regards, Chris PIGOTT, Potts Point, N.S.W.

    3. Peter, Your recent note contains the following: > 'On the east wall of the south transept, placed high and difficult to > read, is a memorial to members of the Pigott family, probably > associated wth the earlier mentioned Granado Pigott. It Reads:- > > Near this place lyes interred the body of Robert Pigott > Who departed this life 10th February 1757, aged 54 years > Also Samuel his son aged 10 days. > Also Susan the wife of Robert Pigott who died > 7th May 1779 aged 66 years. > Also Richard the son of Robert and Sarah who > died 8th May 1778 aged 4 years.' I have some details, which you may already have, as follows: Robert PIGOTT; marr 3 Apr 1739, Susan CLARKE; issue: 1. Richard PIGOTT, bt 9 Dec 1741. 2. Samuel PIGOTT, a twin, bt 13 Jan 1744-45. 3. Susan PIGOTT, the other twin, bt 13 Jan 1744-45. Robert PIGOTT; marr 2 Nov 1769, Sara BRAND; issue: 1. Richard PIGOTT, bt 30 May 1774. I had a notion that all these events occurred at Ely Trinity, Cambs, but am now not absolutely certain. I will need to locate the source in my notebooks. They seem to fit the details of the M.I. in your posting. I would venture to guess that Robert (2) was related to Robert (1), perhaps another son? Regards, Chris.

    3. Joe, Your early posting on George PIGOTT of Otley is a bit of a "stumper" (but I seldom stray outside my crease, so perhaps instead an appeal for l.b.w., trying to dig out a well-delivered yorker). I gather that his wife Ann, recorded with him in 1841, as aged 30+, was probably dead by 1844, & may have been the Ann PIGOTT who died in Sheffield, Mar qtr 1843 (although a bit out of territory, unless visiting for medical treatment?). This is based on the (I think) reasonable assumption (apart from the spouse names, look at the gap in the daughters' ages in 1851) that the Otley marriage in Jun qtr 1844 was George's 2nd, & to an older Mary Ann BROWN, enumerated with him in 1851, aged 48, with her daur Sarah Ann, aged 4, together with her two(presumed) step-daurs - Eliza, aged 17, & Mary, aged 15. But I cannot find an appropriate death for Ann's other daughter, also named Ann, aged 2 weeks/months in 1841, nor any appropriate enumerations for her away from home, & born Otley, in Census returns from 1851 onwards. Yorkshire is not well served by published Registers before 1837. Nor do there appear to be any other PIGOTTs born Knaresborough recorded in English Census returns. So, without his 1st marriage, ca 1832, or a baptism from Knaresborough, ca 1809, we cannot really proceed a lot further without other leads from family sources. Which means I haven't walked yet - still awaiting the video-umpire's decision (with abject apologies to your List's non-cricketing members!) Regards, Chris.

I have not seen a copy of this book. Francis, a distinguished lawyer on the Eastern Shore, died in 1684, having, it is said, emigrated from England ca 1655; probably recorded on a list of Tithables, Co Northampton Co, Virginia, 1666, as owner of 4 slaves; he had issue by two wives, Frances Robins LITTLEJOHN (sometimes called ROBINSON ?) & Mary WATERS alias CULPEPPER; his will, dated 27 Mar 1684, was proved same year. Frank BROWN is cited (by others) to have determined that Francis PIGOTT came from West Challow in Bucks, & was born there ca 1616. I cannot argue with that, if that information appears on documents in America, which Frank BROWN may have seen. But, there are some researchers in America who have presumed, probably from this information, that this was the son of Ralph PIGOTT by Elizabeth GORE. My earlier posting, if I am correct in all details, which I may not be, seems to indicate, fairly clearly, that this Francis, born West Challow ca 1612, did not emigrate to Virginia, but remained in Berkshire, where he married & had issue, & in 1665 the Magistrate for the Hundred of Kintbury Eagle, Berks. Which leaves the question of the Virginian's ancestry. It appears that there was a Mr PIGOTT, who was Royalist Prisoner at Yarmouth, 1655, possibly transported to H.M.'s Plantations in America; he was a lawyer, having been educated at Caius College, Cantab, 1631, & Lincoln's Inn, 1632. If he was a prisoner in America, he would probably have benefitted, & with his freedom & pardon, from the Restoration of the English monarchy in 1660. He was not Francis PIGOTT, but Ralph PIGOTT, & he was born in Stradsett, Co Norfolk, 18 Oct 1614, son of Francis PIGOTT of Stradsett, by Elizabeth PRATT. But he did, by wife Elizabeth (-?-), have a son, Francis PIGOTT, bt Stradsett, 15 Dec 1642; also educated to the Law, at Caius College, 1659, then Lincoln's Inn, 1661. He leaves no further trace in English records that I have been able to find. And there were three known siblings - Elizabeth PIGOTT, bt 12 Aug 1641; Rachel PIGOTT, bt 29 Jun 1646; & Dorothy PIGOTT, bt 13 Sep 1648, all in Stradsett. This family has origins in Norfolk many centuries earlier, in the form of Hugh BIGOD, one of several Earls of Norfolk, about which family I propose to do another series of postings to your List in the not too distant future. One of the intriguing pieces of evidence we have which might, JUST MIGHT, link this to the Virginia family, is the name Framingham or Framlingham. It is the name of a place in Norfolk, very near Stradsett, where the BIGOD/PIGOTT family held a fortified Castle, close up to the time Francis PIGOTT left for Virgina. And it appears as a given name of one of Francis's Virginian grandsons. And, I have to say, I can find no evidence of any link to Framlingham/ Framingham, either the place, or a person, in the Bucks PIGOTT family of Colewick/Hatford/Marcham, the subject of this series of postings. Just a bit of food for thought for my American cousins. __________________________________________________________________ To be concluded. Regards, Chris PIGOTT, Potts Point, N.S.W.
