Hi, Colleen, Don't feel like you're the 'Lone Indian' out there on this subject......when I was first looking a year ago for my Native American Indian ancestors who are CHEROKEE and CHOCTAW I ran into one particularly 'nasty' listkeeper whose complaint about my posting (which she completely DELETED, by the way,) was that # 1. I had too many CAPITALS (which....face it.....only those of us who have been researching for more than a few minutes know THAT rule!) # 2. She was irritated about all of the 'Anglo' names, especially, in my reference to a particular Colonel among my ancestral grandfathers.....that I mentioned...obviously because these were my ancestors in the line where the particular N.A.I. ancestral line emerged in our family history for the first time.....and, obviously, if you do not know what that particular ancestor's name was you have to use the names you know and hope someone else will recognize it when you are searching. This particular listowner was terribly rude.....hateful is more like it. I was stunned. It was of great interest to me to find the information. I came to realize a short time later that one of things that was, obviously, irritating her was that part of what separated us in her mind, along with the fact that I had 'Anglo' ancestors, was that my CHEROKEE and CHOCTAW ancestors did not go on the 'TRAIL OF TEARS' instead, in one particular case, my ancestral grandmother was assimilated into the 'white' culture by a marriage to an 'Anglo' grandfather. In another case the ancestors in question seemed to 'disappear' into the 'white' culture and/or into the 'woods,' literally and figuratively. The sad part about it is that in this ancestral hunt......in some people's minds.....we are NOT all created equal......there is too much hatred that still runs rampant in some people's veins......against their very own blood in some instances....and is there on all cultural sides in question. So.....bottom line is......SHAKE THEM OFF......and keep on going. The woman to whom I have referred almost put me off of my search for my CHOCTAW roots completely....as she was CHOCTAW...... I was hurt at her lack of acceptance of my quest....especially considering that those of us who are descended from the 'white' and 'non-white' cultures.....find enough 'whites' that don't want to admit that any of their ancestors were ever darker than 'paper white' and find ourselves in ongoing debates regarding the subject......then when you find the places to ask the questions......and you encounter the 'reverse discrimination'......it hurts......but just know that: the person dishing out the bad vibes may have endured significant discrimination in their lifetime and that they are working out their own issues......and there are many, many different lists out there with listowners and members that are wonderful, engaging, caring, intelligent people who are so very helpful and extend themselves so graciously to help you find your place in their family and/or cultural group. Some of these fellow researchers are so very kind and generous as to make up for every slight you have ever encountered. You will find that some lists PRIDE themselves on their hostility and rudeness.....just UNSUBSCRIBE.....and brush off their negativity and go on. They're just individiual people.....most with no special credentials....sitting at a keyboard in their little part of the world writing on an electronic/cyberspace sheet of paper.....nothing less.....nothing more. If you stay in their 'arena' you will only be slowed down....deterred from your 'quest.' There are so many lists and so many websites where you can find out so very much more information than these people have access to anyway. Some of them really.....'DON'T HAVE A CLUE' anyway.....concentrate, especially, on asking the questions over in the lists and websites that are specializing in the family surnames that you know that connect to that particular Native American Indian line that you are looking for. If PIERCE is the earliest name you have then concentrate there. Case in point......(for which I am always looking for more information.....) my ggg grandmother was Elizabeth PIERCE, born: between 1778 - 1790 in South Carolina. She married my ggg grandfather, William MYRICK, born in the late 1700's SOMETIME......and they have four sons, (that I am aware of ,) Aquilla MYRICK, born: 1814 in GA, (one researcher says his name is James,) Hen ry MYRICK, born: abt 1818 in AL, married Rebeccah ?, Jeremiah MYRICK, born: abt. 1820 in AL, married a ? STINSON, (dau of Elizabeth STINSON, born: abt. 1780 in SC,) and William H. MYRICK, born: bet. 1823 - 1827 in MS, married: Pho ebe (sp?) Catherine HERRINGTON, born: bet. 1834 - 1836, two of their sons were William A.MYRICK, born: 1860 and my great grandfather, Calvin Pierce MYRICK, born: 1858 who married Harriet 'Hattie' Katherine HARRINGTON/HERRINGTON, (his 3rd cousin, once removed.) My Elizabeth PIERCE appears to be the Elizabeth 'Betty/Bettie' PIERCE that was the daughter of Hug h PIERCE, (RS,) born: abt. 1749 in Frederick Co., VA, who married Sofia HUNTER who was CHEROKEE and was the daughter of CHEROKEE parents, father: Bold HUNTER and mother: Beaver TOTER/TOATER, aka: "To-wa-yah-leese/ Toyaleesa" she was listed in the "EARLY CHEROKEE PLANTERS OF GEORGIA" book. Also, I am still looking for any information on my gggg grandmother, Martha Jane Dorsey/Dorcy/D'Arcy LIGHTFOOT, born: abt. 1763, daughter of Phillip LIGHTFOOT of Virginia who appears to descend from Colonel Phillip LIGHTFOOT, born in England and emigrated to Virginia, and his wife, Alice CORBIN. There is an enormous amount of 'family legend' surrounding the CHEROKEE or CHOCTAW ancestry of Martha Jane and her daughter Frances Lucretia 'Patsy' LOTT.....their is confusion on the use of the nickname 'Patsy' for Frances as 'Patsy' was the common nickname for Martha during that era. So...not sure on that issue....there are several children of Martha Jane Dorsey LIGHTFOOT and her husband, Absalom LOTT (of John LOTT and Elizabeth JOYNER line,) and their daughter, Frances Lucretia 'Patsy' LOTT, born: abt. 1800 in AL, married my ggg grandfather: William HATTEN, son of Lewis Lamkin HATTEN and Sarah 'Sally' UNDERWOOD, dau of Jacob UNDERWOOD and Hannah CLARK. If anyone connects with anything please contact [email protected] Good luck with your research. Sincerely, Belinda Myrick Barnett
